Baby monitors that monitor your baby's breathing ... do they work? are they worth it?

Smart baby monitors these days do just about everything short of changing your baby's diaper.
And, in this video, John explores a feature present in two of our perennial favorite smart monitors-the ability to monitor your baby's breathing.
Watch how the Nanit Pro and the Miku Pro stack up when John tests them with a robotic baby (seriously), and get his thoughts on whether this feature is worth it.

There's a lot to baby monitors that monitor your baby's breathing. First of all, they aren't medical devices, and shouldn't be treated as such. Secondly, they work in different ways, and have different requirements. The Nanit Pro and the Miku Pro are, in our opinion, two of the best baby breathing monitors of 2022. So, in this video we dive deep into how this technology works in both of them, the upsides, how they work, and the downsides.

We love our Miku! There have been two instances now where I noticed that my baby’s breathing rate was much higher than what it typically is. I went in both times and checked on him and he had a fever. I would’ve never known otherwise! We were able to give him Motrin to bring it down. It is such a sense of relief and I’m so thankful that we bought it!

Great comparison. We chose Miku due to all of the extra effort you mentioned that is needed for the Nanit. Only 2 false alarms in over a year with Miku and thankfully no true emergencies.

It sounds like the newer Eufy Baby 2 Wifi baby monitor might have some type of breathing monitoring too in the future. Excited to hear a review on that camera!

Nothing hits quite like a Nanit red-alert at 2:00am 🤯. Use plain white crib sheets with no patterns to avoid false alarms.

It would be great if you can make the video of the miku safety! Thanks!

I've been using nanot for almost 2 years. You do need to start it but if you take the baby/breathing wear out of the crib without stopping it after a few minutes you'll just get a simple notification on your phone that says something like no breathing wear detected baby removed from crib. I've never had to actually press stop before I take the baby out which really does make a difference in usability!

What about the old tried and true officialy MEDICALLY CERTIFIED MONITOR Snuza HeroMD? Could you run the same test on that? You are a champ subbed!

Can you please do a follow up video on radar technology on the miku pro? I bought the miku pro but it seems to not understand when baby is “away”. I got a false alert when baby wasn’t in the bassinet and worries me it’s not accurate or I got a defective device. It also has connection issues I’ve had to troubleshoot with the company before. I really want to love my miku I hope I’m just not understanding the settings? It just seems super glitchy.

Great video, do you know if the alerts are continuous and can work with Apple Watch, and aren’t just a single haptic notification? Thanks

The alerts are audible with the Apple Watch.

Please make a video on why and how the radar used is safe? I am considering the bebcare Monitoring system due to the low EMF feature. Would love to see a comparison or just how the radar on the Miku is negligible.

Nanit pro you don't need to click for it to set up breathing it auto detects for setup and when you take baby out it auto deactivates as well. The miku doesn't have a floor mount anymore but nanit still does if you wanna make it moveable and not drill into wall

For my first baby, I used miku at first, but it was not accurate. Then I switched to nanit, but the swaddle's size was not suitable. And the next baby we used sense-u. After using for four months, I think sense-u is more accurate and timely than miku and nanit.

My wife and I used the Snuza HeroMD and I'd recommend it to anyone. It notifies you after 10 seconds of no detection and gives off a slight green light each time it detects breath. My wife is a nurse and was spending her nights constantly waking up and checking the baby was breathing. With the monitor she could just look over and see the green light and knew it was ok. For the peace of mind it gave her, I'd say it was essential.

In a few months I will be a new first time dad and I'm freaking out. I want baby gear (diaper bags and whatever stuff) that isn't so femanine and covered with animals and flowers and whatnot, if you know what I mean. Can you give us a video on your pick for "cool, manly, engine-revin' baby/father gear? The stuff my wife picked out just isn't for me if you know what I mean. LOL

Sooooo, nevermind about this comment... I just pledged for your bag on Kickstarter! (And I used your affiliate link to purchase the Nanit pro bundle.) I'm brand new to the channel and am benefiting so much already! Thank you sir!
