Baby Born to Koola Gorilla

Koola, an 18-year-old western lowland gorilla, gave birth to a female at Brookfield Zoo on November 4. The two can be seen on exhibit in Tropic World: Africa along with Koola's daughter Kamba, 9; Koola's mother Binti, 25; and JoJo, 33, the sire of the infant. In the wild, western lowland gorillas are critically endangered due to habitat destruction, primarily from logging; disease such as the Ebola virus; the illegal pet trade; and poaching for bushmeat. The Chicago Zoological Society participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan, which is a cooperative population management and conservation program for select species in accredited North American zoos and aquariums. The baby's sire, JoJo, is from Lincoln Park Zoo and arrived at Brookfield Zoo in May 2012 based on a recommendation from the Species Survival Plan.

We were so happy to see the pair on Memorial Day. Of course the baby had grown quite a bit, but still, it's an awesome experience to see them in real life. The mom was so gentle and it was cute to watch the baby ride on her back while she foraged for food.

Humans could take lessons from this mother she is very kind and caring for her little one and not beating on her or ignoring her!

I grew up very close to the Brookfield zoo moved to California after college. So excited to see the apes at the Brookfield zoo where I had such good memories. Welcome to the world sweet beautiful baby. 🧚♀️🌸🧚♀️🌸🧚♀️🌸🧚♀️

We're is the food we're is the plants the leaves I. The wild. Garrillas get plants by the tons. Every min they vegetarians she's nursing and I don't see no plants no food thats.sad very sad video

Just because there is no food in a video focusing on a newborn doesn't mean it's not there. The gorillas are fed in their behind the scenes habitats as well as their public habitat. They get food throughout the day, as well as other enrichment items, such as browse. We have posted plenty of videos where the gorillas are receiving leafy greens.
