Babalon explained: The Feminine Divine in Thelema

Let's delve deep into the mystical and symbolic world of Babalon, a central figure within Thelema, the spiritual philosophy developed by Aleister Crowley in the early 20th century. Babalon, often referred to as the Great Mother, the Sacred Wh*re, or the Liberatrix, embodies profound aspects of the divine feminine, sexual liberation, and spiritual transcendence.
We explore her multifaceted roles and meanings within Thelemic cosmology, where she complements cosmic entities such as Nuit, the sky goddess, and Hadit, the point of infinite possibilities. As a figure of both creation and destruction, Babalon's imagery is rich with symbols like the "Cup of Abominations," which she uses to transform base material into spiritual gold, epitomizing the alchemical process at the heart of personal and universal transformation.
Significantly, Babalon is pivotal in crossing the Abyss in Thelemic mysticism, where she acts as the guardian demanding the dissolution of the ego. This leads to the ultimate spiritual rebirth of the magician into a state of unity with all existence. Her role extends into the practice of s@xual magick, a key aspect of Thelemic practice, where she represents the potent power of s@xual energy in spiritual enlightenment and transformation.
Additionally, the episode covers the historical evolution of Babalon's imagery and significance through the 20th century, notably through figures like Jack Parsons and Kenneth Grant, who expanded her archetype in the contexts of their own magical practices and interpretations. Babalon's enduring legacy in contemporary Thelema, her influence on feminist and queer discourses within the occult community, and her depiction as a revolutionary figure against oppressive structures are also discussed, highlighting her relevance and adaptability in modern spiritual practices.
This episode illuminates Babalon's crucial role within Thelema and showcases her as a symbol of empowerment and spiritual depth, challenging conventional notions of femininity and spirituality.

🔥 Great Video! As a Discordian, I often run into Thelemites and view them as our cousins in faith. The figure of Jack Parsons is especially fascinating to me. In addition to being a noted Thelemite occultists, the guy laid the foundation for the US space program by founding the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and did rituals with L. Ron Hubbard (who, in my opinion, saw the success of Thelema and decided he could make his own religion). Parsons was a true mad scientist, and in mad scientist fashion, he accidentally blew himself up in his home garage workshop. L. Ron Hubbard then stole his dead friend's yacht.

Have you heard of Jon Atack? He's a former scientologist who runs a KZread channel where he interviews people on subjects related to scientology, as well as cults more broadly. He's talked quite a bit about Hubbard's early days, his relationship with the occult, and to what extent he may have actually believed in any of it. As a hint, it may not have been a fluke that "Dianetics" sounds like "Diana".

This was actually quite helpful- I had thought I was out of the Abyss after spending 22 years crossing it, and I've been having a very difficult time figuring out why things were still only half-out of the darkness, but I had forgotten the step of draining my blood into her cup- it's been happening, but I kept getting it in weird terms like "being in the wine-press of god," and I've been attributing it to psychic vampires rather than the last stage of the Abyss. I don't know if you practice Thelema or are just a scholar, but that was a great catch, and I thank you for sharing it... 22 years of being a karmic mirror to all of existence is exhausting.

🔥 Hail Mother of Abominations! Thanks for helping my revival proceed after the Holy Mother blew my circuits out to induce the transformation I'm just finishing up to enter my teacher phase, Chiron return my cue to synthesize my diverse methods trained over decades. To be a hetero guy with also the senses of a witch is a tough mix to navigate in this world as it is. Getting to be strong enough in mind and body and rooted enough in present time focus has been the work of my On The Roof period, the timing sussed out by Human Design I find to fit my life perfectly, like the Hermit 6/2 idea that's familiar to me since before I ever heard about it. Synchronicity, I only heard about this kind of map after Chiron entered Aries, my natal sign. So for me it has been to train my inner masculine to quit falling for the femme fatale and learn to tune into the witchy woman who is still the female kind who adores her wild male counterparts. The lessons have been focused on extracting the true strength of human male bodies from the tyrant's curse, the dysfunctional governments that force an emotional state no more advanced that the teenagers of our species, and that without wise adults to put them in their places. The Crowned And Conquering Child has his crown knocked off more than a few times before he convinces his uncle Set to go back to being the edge lord of his true calling so he, the vibrant new Sun can take the core of the system that is the fire god's true place, that all may benefit from his light. So Babalon led me to Chinese medicine and martial arts so I could melt the western Roman abuse emotional armor and revive the true masculine who is not a gender bender, but a traditional hetero with no disrespect or expectation of females being his property. The real Divine Masculine is rooted in his power such that he's at peace with the wills of others, including the Beloved, and most especially that. She incinerated my magickal temple constructed of my boyhood dreams and nightmares and shoved me into bardic boot camp where I learned to incrementally train strength and fitness. She led me to herbs and fungus and the teachings of Paul Stamets and Merlin Sheldrake and led me to the language of the birds that have my hearing sense so well tuned I've had a real kung fu challenge in the emotional reaction tests they put me through, hail Mother of Abominations indeed! With the setup of the Roman abuse network it has to be force and fire at first to blow the lid off the jail. Then the time outs and the lessons far under the radar of Set's panopticon are required for each individual to be a fully trained human being as only the few and high status wizards once kept cloistered as the Iron Age of our time played out the destructo curses. The OTO initiated me and then my own path took me elsewhere to disconnect my emotional time bombs in private, On The Roof is where the Hermits do that so we can come back with wisdom in the second half of our lives instead of retiring just when our wisdom blooms. With great discipline, like the woman on the Strength card who has such a calm interior and inner courage the lion submits to her divine Grace we bust through the so-called abominations to more beauty than we've ever known possible. Or so I feel in the revival under way. Pump the belly and deepen the breath! This is the first key as it takes greater oxygen intake to sustain the higher states.

I read the Red Goddess a couple years ago, in which the author links the Babalon encountered by John Dee and Edward Kelly to ancient accounts of Ishtar/Inanna worship as well as the Babalon Working by Jack Parsons. Quite fascinating, though I think that the modern view does not adequately recognize the dangerous aspects of this deity (e.g. represented in ~2400 BCE as Ishtar with weapons and a helmet).

In a single footnote, Crowley himself asserted that Babalon and Lilith were the same.

If you don’t learn from the wisdoms of the past you will be consumed by your ignorance thereof. Revelations was an esoteric polemic against Nero figures running the Roman Empire. Nero was the choice figure because his Procurate Florian raided the coffers of the temple in order that Nero could build his palace. Since revelations began as a Jewish polemic, its use of the name Babylon is understandable but still ignorant. The name is Babilu, 𒆍𒀭𒊏𒆠, it means gate of the god. At the time of its construction it had replaced Shuruppak as the major westward facing city in Sumer facing the middle Euphrates. It original patron deity was Marduk, a minor son of Enki the god of Eridu. The mistress does not belong to Babilu, but Uruk. The Name begins as Inanna a goddess of love and lessor god of war, behind Enlil. During the early dynastic period of Sumer between the 25th and 24th century BCE Sumer expanded through its proxies in Mari in order to align settlements on important trade routes heading west. This brought tremendous wealth, but also epic problems, namely greed. In the aftermath of a civil war between Emma and Lahash the king of Emma, Zagasi, by force tried to control all of Sumer, thereby pissing off the priesthoods of various cities who appointed their own lugal. Mysteriously an outsider, who took the name Sargon, either defeated him or his immediate follower. It is important to note that conflicts prior to Sargon had a diplomatic and military solutions via the council of the gods under the “celestial” sky god, at the Eanna in Uruk. This diplomatic process had little importance to the most powerful dynastic leader. He booted An out of his temple and replace him with a revised version of Inanna, now blended with the more androgynous Attar of Arabia forming Ishtar, who became the goddess of seduction and the primary goddess of war. Ishtar was the most popular of the gods and the most storied. her traits were 1. Seductive, even trying to seduce her older male relatives 2. Capricious, tearing off her clothes to control the netherworld she ends up needing to be rescued from the fate of a corpse. 3. Dominating, often pictured with on foot on the rump of a lion. 4. Tyrannical, because Gilgamesh refuses her sexual advances she takes the bull of heaven and tries to kill him, instead they kill the bull, at which point, in her anger she kills Enkidu. We often do not understand the wisdom in these stories, these stories were also esoteric, portraying nefarious kings of the past by hiding things that they did in story. Because we don’t understand them we misrepresent them and the people who created them in ignorant ways. So let me clarify this. While there were wars within Sumer, these simply the moving of chess pieces around the board as power shifted with trade, technology, etc. The dynastic period began a period of world wars in which the devastation and loss of life astronomically increased. To understand how bad it is just read the military history of the NeoAssyrian Empire. In that context the sages one of the oldest settlements, Eridu, and the proximal settlement of Ur set out to be away, via a circuitous route they eventually ended up in the deserts of arabia, where the last native king of Babylon, Nabonidus went, too late, to reconstruct the world of Akkad and Sumer. He failed, and the gods of Sumer eventually faded such that all we remembered were bits and pieces borrowed to contruct the Hebrew foundational myths and borrowed myths in Greek mythology, until the translation of cuneiform. AC is foolish, and he used these symbols of the past in foolish ways. The whore of Babylon is about dominance and power. Its usage in Revelation are about people who are dominated, war shattered, and disempowered to strike back with the sword of their tongue about those who defeated them. The conflict itself was a testosterone fest that got out of hand. Kings that abused power and were destroyed, kings that ran away rather than trying to convince his people to seek peace. The storm that rose up in Jerusalem was not of one Ishtar but many, none of which recognized the daemon in the mirror. When Crowley looked in the mirror what daemon did he see?
