Dimensions (inches): 14" H x 8" W x 9.5" D
Weight: 13.5 lbs. Each
MSRP ~ $470 Pair (couldn’t find exact MSRP but with my research, $470 is close)
Where I Purchased - Pawn Shop
Listed Price - $180
Price Paid - $180
Condition (not included in score) - 90%
The cabinets are in good shape but they do have some minor wear.
Quality - 8.0
These are nice quality speakers. The cabinets are sturdy and don’t exude any nasty resonance when I knock on the either. The Kevlar cones are sturdy feeling and I like the fact these speakers use rubber surrounds.
If I had to try and find a quality fault, I guess it would be the binding posts and the lack of protection for the tweeters. Again, I needed to stretch to find and quality faults.
Like usual, B&W did a great job with these speakers, quality wise, especially considering the price point.
Sound - 8.5
These are just beautiful sounding speakers and I can definitely understand why there are so many fans out there.
At low volumes or near-field, these are going to be pretty darn hard to beat, with any speakers double their price. They have clear and clean sound and the mid bass is sublime.
If I had to say areas that these speakers are slightly lacking it’s the deep bass notes and they seem to strain more at higher volumes.
In normal sized rooms and at normal volume, these are killer sounding speakers.
MSRP Rating - 9.0
I had to base my ~ $470 MSRP off the original 601 and the 601 S3 speakers, since I couldn’t specifically fine the S2 MSRP.
Anywhere near this price, even in 1999 money, was a killer deal. These speakers are very well rounded performers and punch way above their weight class.
Again, I couldn’t find the exact MSRP for some reason so if anyone out there knows, I would love to hear from you so I can update my description:)
Aesthetics - 8
These are pretty basic looking speakers, especially with the grills on. With the grills off, I think they are a very attractive speaker. That yellow Kevlar just pops and very refreshing, since I’m usually surrounded by the Klipsch copper.
I also like the size of these speakers, which is pretty compact when compared to the other 6.5” bookshelf speakers I’ve owned in the past.
Price Paid Value - 8.0
Picking these up for $180 is a pretty sweet deal, especially considering I bought them at a pawn shop, where they have margins built into their prices. But I’ve definitely had better deals, like you all know if you are taking the time to read all these ramblings:)
Average Guy HiFi Rating - 41.5/50 = 83%
Final Thoughts -
These speakers are about 22 years old at this point but their style still holds and the sound really holds up.
The details and the soundstage are very large for their size. I would definitely recommend these speakers for people that aren’t expecting concert volumes or that need a ton of bass.
Perfect for normal volumes in most rooms but if you like tons of bass and listen loudly, there are probably better options.
Anywhere near this price, jump on them before someone else does!

Tell you what really woke up my old 601s was a Yamaha CR-1000 receiver, the combination of the old school receiver and somewhat newer speakers was just unbelievable. The sound literally drew my teenage kids out of their rooms. The CR-1000 is 47 years old and I purchased the 601s in the mid 90's so say 26 years old but again the combination is just amazing. My kids are like it's just 2 speakers dad. Just found your channel, thanks for content will subscribe. Forgot to add I bought the metal stands with spikes on the bottom don't know if this changes anything or not.

I agree. I used to use a pioneer amp then just got the B&O beomaster 5000 and I've never heard the speakers sound so good. Very low bass and sparkling mids and highs. Was looking to upgrade the speakers but glad I upgraded the amp instead!

I really like your videos! And to a completely new beginner like me, one thing I would really like to see is how do you wire them? And how are the speakers connected to a receiver/amp? I am sure people with some level of experiences would probably not even realize it’s a thing, but to me it does seem complicated…again thanks for the detailed information and true review :)

I have a complete 5.1 set up. 4 x 601 s2 and the matching CC6 centre. I have owned these from new - purchased January 2001. I am in the UK so maybe pricing got inflated for export to the US, but I paid only 200 GBP per pair for the 601 s2, brand new! They still sound so good am really nervous about upgrading. I tried the new B&W 607 s2 last year, but returned them within 7 days. Too bright and not enough bass. I may try the 607 or even the 707 in due course. Great review thank you 🙏

I have these as rear surrounds in a 5.1 setup. Main speakers are the 604 S2 which, coupled with a B&W subwoofer, produce killer bass. Then again, I remember a Doja Cat song (an Atmos mix) which outputs the drums from the rear surrounds (kind of odd, but it works) and I was amazed at how much bass, clean and tight, these little 601 S2 produced. Love them, and they do shine on some other Atmos mixes using Apple Music.

Interesting. I used to have the larger 602s before I moved to the B&W in-wall units. I sold the 602s for $650 for the pair off eBay. I have a pair of Signature 7's & CWM7.5's as well as six of the slightly older CCM65s for my ATMOS system running off a Yamaha 3060. My HT room is 15' x 19' with 10-foot tall ceilings and with the proper subs, the 602's did an awesome job prior to the in-walls

These are excellent value for money either for Hi Fi or AV. I’ve used them on stands for two channel and would say they are comparable to Kef Q-15s, if not better. They also make for brilliant rears in a 5.1 setup with matching S2 603s and CC6 up front. They do sound better with grilles off, but for god’s sake keep them on when not listening and if possible the door locked if there’s children about. I can attest to the fact that teething infants will chew on those cones and pokey little fingers will simultaneously destroy those tweeter diaphragms in a matter of about one second otherwise☹️🤦🏻‍♂️
