B&M 250 Supercharger DIY Rebuild Attempt: Purchase and Disassembly (78 Firebird Ep.25)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
With the 454 engine for our 1978 Firebird largely completed, next up is putting together a supercharger to sit atop it. But we can't just go get a nice new one, oh no, that would be way too easy. Though, I may have outdone myself with this one. We picked up a pile of parts that once made up (most of) a B&M 250 supercharger kit and in this episode we'll go over what exactly we are working with and walk through the process of taking it all the way apart.
Timeline of filming: December 3rd, 2019 - March 11th, 2020
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Everything You Wanted - Dan Lebowitz
7:50 Lazy River Rag - Dan Lebowitz
15:29 Cliffsides - Dan Lebowitz

It may have been a long break for our uploads, but I assure you it has not been a break from filming and editing videos. This supercharger rebuild was a debacle pretty much right from the start due to the condition of the kit, the parts missing from it, and the fact that I had no idea what I was doing the entire time. For most car videos I can at least feign competence/foreknowledge but getting this supercharger set up kicked my butt. We will be covering those difficulties over the next few videos where we work on putting together... something. Thanks so much to everyone for hanging in there!

Instead of welding a bolt to the bearing race, just weld a bead across it, as it cools and contracts it will loosen up, might take 2 or 3 beads depending on how much of an interference fit there is

For the needle bearing removal, what I’ve done with dirt bike cases with similar situations is, heat the whole part in an oven to 400, then smack the case against some wood and the weight of the bearing pulls itself out after a few wacks.

good to see you back!
The complete Blower Shop Supercharger option at 3 1/2 times the price is actually looking pretty attractive now.
Harbor Freight sells a blind bearing puller. Sku 62601. It made my life easier. Great content. Good to see you back.
This channel is almost the sole reason I got into cars.

I've never seen a supercharger rebuild before, I had no idea they were this complicated... You say you have no idea what you're doing, but you still know way more than 99% of other people. Many would've given up on that stuck bearing. Can't wait for the next vid
Thank you for making these videos Fuzzy. I got so excited seeing a new video from you in my feed! It was my birthday this weekend and it was a pretty difficult one, this makes some of that much better.
If you ever have to deal with recessed needle bearings again, what works nicely is getting the housing very toasty (400 degrees or so) and slapping it face down onto a flat piece of wood that's on a concrete floor. That usually gets the bearing to move, and sometimes they fly out completely. You do need to be careful not to slap the housing down too hard or you may crack it. I've used this method on multiple motorcycle engine cases and have always had luck with it.
The king is back
Even though you've an entire extra bank of cylinders to deal with i reall super enjoy this project. Firebird has always been the body style of the ages to me. Simply put, the production and care you take to explain these rebuilds keeps us coming back for more.
I love your Frugal methods of working on cars
slight mod to the blind hole bearing removal- use pieces of paper towel smeared with grease. pack that in there, it has less tendency to squirt out than plain grease.

the old man used to use bread and grease for pilot bearings.
I about lost it when I saw the upload. Glad you are back!
Glad to see this project back in motion and of course thoroughly enjoyed the pinto series but I absolutely wouldn't have done it lol!
Maybe is not the biggest channel in yt, but is my favourite for sure, cant wait to see the next video
Hey mister! I missed your videos! Good luck for you! Hope you make more videos! 🙏👏👏👏👏👏
Adding some sawdust or even some tissue paper to the grease helps it seal I’ve even used clutch dust and grease to push out spigot bearings
Okay youtube failed to show me this video. Great video man. Well worth the wait
always a good day to see one of your videos again fuzzy!
Oh thank God you posted I thought the boredom was going to kill me
Well I guess I'll just keep the money I've been saving to send flowers to put by your headstone. 😂
I just looked a couple of days ago for a new FD vid. perfect!🎃
Yeah...at last. I was having Project Binky vibes for a while.. great to see you back guys.
I missed you, mike! Glad to see this video this morning.
Thank you for liking blowers and not turbos, LOL. Too many turbo builds out there. And when you want bottom end power, definitely the way to go!
Ahhh yes, the Bi annual Fuzzy Dice Projects video update!

I hope that by bi-annual you mean every other year, because that is more my speed than twice a year.
Let us rejoice! He is back!!!
You inspired me, after watching every video on your projects, decided to grab a project of my own! Well a year 5 months and 7k later... Starting to wonder what in the fuck I got myself into, funding kind of a issue biggest problem is time never enough.
Well, now I know how a supercharger works!
Draw a line on the aluminum part with a sharpie. Then heat it until the sharpie disappears. That is your indication that it’s as hot as you want to get aluminum.
I’ve been watching for another upload on this!
I’ve seen bread packed in place of grease work really well to get those bearings out a few times. May be worth a shot in the future

Paper towel works too
Maaan, it was so long ago. Nice you keep doing the thing.
Very happy to see you back.
Great video! since everyone has a "trick" for removing those backplate bearings, besides the blind puller which does not always work. You can knock the cage and rollers out like you did then take your welder and weld beads all around the inside of the race. Leave it to cool back down to room temperature and those outer races will fall right out.

I use this at work on big roller bearings, works a treat
Honestly it’s been so long section of time since you have uploaded but it is so worth it just because you make things understandable for the common Man
w00t! Always looking forward to uploads from this channel
You should know that we love your content so much that we're willing to wait months for your vids. I'm sure most of us wouldn't do that for any other KZreadr
I have been missing your content thanks for the upload!💪🤘👍
You’re back. All that time paid off
Damn man, how have i missed you! How to see you really soon!
GOOD LUCK with that charger. That's an early, cheap, low efficiency model. The money and effort put into getting that repaired would be better used on a better/newer unit. Hope it all goes well!
Good to see ya after work on a saturday
I have waited an eternity for this video ♥️♥️♥️
i know it isn't easy to make these videos by yourself. I have to say that they are top notch quality imo however. It is always entertaining to watch these videos
Love this series!
Can't wait to see it back together again
Good to see you back!

Good to see you back. Need to step up the video output. I missed you.
Great to see a new episiode
Love your narration and content bro, keep up the good work! 🙏
so happy ur back
Nice to see ya back!!!!!!!
To get those rear bearings out, knock out the guts like you did, then run a weld bead around the inside of the race and when it cools it will fall out.
Just when I thought I was about to get some sleep
Love the channel! I wish I could watch more videos😅
really enjoy the Video. thanks fuzzy
Welcome back!
Been a while, glad to see a upload.
So excited to see more videos from you! Definitely one of my favorite youtubers, and a huge motivation for me to keep working on my own car.
Welcome back we have been patiently waiting! So excited to always see a new video from you
Oh hell yeah. Glad you're uploading again. Was just thinking about rewatching the Pinto series. Love your channel. Much love
I honestly just figured it had taken you a long time to edit the road trip video, and that you were in the process of setup/recovery from that.
Man! There is nothing like increasing the displacement to reignite one’s desire to ride it like a rented mule! However, considering the larger supercharger and the over percentage plus re stripping the supercharger will definitely rekindle or rebirth the FireChicken into a demonic hell fire snorting Rooster! I would imagine the mechanical water pump is getting an eviction notice real soon! Good luck! I look forward to you getting to drive it like idiot! After all, that’s the reason we build things right?
lets go welcome back man i just re watched the series yesterday and the legend him self posts the next vid. keep up the good stuff mate
Welcome back buddy
WHOOOOOYEAHHHHHHH!!!! Welcome back fuzzy dice!!! Man im so excited to see the 454 swap series going again!!
Great episode as always. Was just looking for you recently hoping you had some new stuff. Thanks for the hard work
Omg omg your back lol you have been solely missed 🙂 good to see you mate
AYO THE KING RETURNS
Looking forward to more :)
Thank you for your video. I always wait impatiently for your uploads - you are funny and informative, and watching your videos one can say they are not made with pressure - irt looks like you do them for fun - which benefits both the contnent and the easy way you present stuff - therefore your videos are really nice and realxing to watch. Thank you once again. BTW The Pinto series was the best of the best. I watched it already several times - I don;t know why, but I somehow love the story, the way it is presented and the fact - there is no rush in these videos. Well done ! Keep up good workm you channel is underrated.. .it might change soon.
He's back!!!
Oh man... Seeing you use that chisel and rotary file injured my soul rofl. Only playin' man I completely understand the whats and whys. Excited for the next part!
Love the content.
Love your vids fuzzy
Welcome back 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
more videossss love em
Another way to get those needle bearings out is to remove all the needles and cages then, Use a welding tip to heat the race. It's thin and won't take long to get red hot. Don't go crazy on it! Just heat a couple sections and let it cool. Then, if you need to heat a couple different section and let it cool off again. Metal wants to expand in all directions but, the plate prevents it from growing in diameter so, it all goes lengthwise. When it cools, it shrinks in all directions and pulls away from the case. Just take care not to get the case too hot! BTW, I a couple months ago I bought a Weiand 250 or 256 on a Holley manifold for a sbc. Looks to be in great condition but, I'm going to have an expert look before I use it since I have no experience with a blower.
Missed your videos.
NO WAY!?!? HES BACK!!!!
So excited when I saw the Notification that you posted! Another great video and now can't wait for the next one. Good luck with this and like your comment half of my project I have no clue what I am doing. But a great day for youtube since we both posted videos ahah. Keep up the great work though!
Nice job see you next year when the next video comes out
You can try running a bead of weld along the middle of the inner race along is entire length. Once it cools you should be able to pull it out. The weld pulls the race into its self essentially making it small and eliminating the press fit
YEAHHH EPISODE 25
For the back plate on the blower, next time use a 2 x 4 as a post and hammer the whole case against the end like a post setter. that way you don't touch the mating surface. I've also found that the grease trick for bearings only seems to work on bushings or sealed bearings. The grease will just push its way through the bearing cage. Bread is better in that instance.
I went through almost that same exact experience trying to remove 2 needle bearings from a motorcycle clutch cover. I even made a custom puller. Since it went to the clutch release rod one of them was so deep in there I had to order some special 6 inch long carbide Dremel bits and ground it out. Next time I'm just keeping the old ones in lol
Try using wet toilet paper instead of grease next time. Just keep adding more on top of what's already in there. Also try to find a driver that's as close to bearing/bushing ID as possible.
OOOOOOOOOO fuzzy dice this makes my day
fuzzy is back!
Using actual bread slices instead of grease seems to create a tougher matrix to push the bearing out rather than flowing through the bearing (races?) as with the grease. might also try heating up the aluminum and then taking some dry ice to the bearing area to force it to contract/break free of the wall of the housing. hope those help in the future.
