Afghans are potrayed as strong, big, burly men, who can cross freezing mountains and blazing deserts at ease. They are shown as hyper-masculine, men who don't feel. Tagore made this difference. He tried to show the soft soul that hides in their huge body, scared to come out, perhaps because circumstances don't permit. At a foreign land, in a foriegn city, Rahamat(protagonist) finds a girl(Mini)who reminds him of his daughter. Mini, raised in a rich household, is an innocent little girl, unaware of the stigmas and taboos that prevail around Afghans. So when she saw a Huge man strolling across the street, she called "Kabuliwallah, O Kabuliwallah", the first time someone was trying to make friends with a Pathan, a man who shouldn't be trusted, a man who can just kill and not think, a man with no "heart".

This is the story of a Pashtun man from Afghanistan, Rahamat who was a peddler in Calcutta. He develops a fatherly affection towards a little girl from a rich household called Mini. The story takes a turn when Rahamat gets convicted of a homicide. This is a human story, and made a lasting impression for Afghanistan and Pashtuns, who come from so troubled, distant lands in search of better oppurtunites. This story will surely make Korbin cry

@@payalsharma5631 Afghanistan has never been prosperous and bountiful in its entire history. Due to rugged terrain, sparsed population, and clan-tribe wars between different qabilas. Pashtuns, back then were seen as a conglomeration of barbaric tribes. Major cities like Kabul, Peshawar had some modernity but villages were absolutely cut from the rest of the world.

Peshawar? It’s in Pakistan. But yes, I agree with you on this that rural afghanistan has always been like this and i don’t think it matters to the rural communities what kind of government is there. The rules that taliban applied last time were already being followed by those people. But places like Herat, Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, Paghman, Bamyan, Panjashir had started becoming more open and modern. The story would have been different for afghanis if we take out 40 years of unrest. 40 years! Wow.

I tear up every time I listen to this song. The travelling merchants from Kabul are very much part of Indian lore. They traded dry fruit for other goods or money. They also were money lenders. Their stay in India used to be a long one, sometimes for several years. On the background of the current situation in Afghanistan this song becomes even more poignant. Also, this character in the song is Kabuliwala, the person from Kabul. He's an Afghan :) In the story, he comes from Kabul to Kolkata every year to sell dry fruits and other things.

Such a confluence of creative genius in just this one song! The Kabuliwala (the man from Kabul, Afghanistan) that chronicles the life of a dry fruit seller from Kabul, is a classic MUST WATCH for any serious student of cinema. The story was penned by the Bengali doyen Rabindranath Tagore who wrote and composed our national anthem among many other things, including a literature Nobel-winning poetry collection (he turned it down in protest against British atrocities). The title role is essayed by Balraj Sahni, arguably the greatest actor in Hindi cinema (watch this one or 'Do Bhiga Zameen/a small piece of land' or 'Haqueekat/reality' to know). Manna Dey (the singer) and Salil Chaudhary (the lyricist) are other movie greats who outdid themselves in this song! Finally this song captures the collective pain of Afghan refugees and their longing for a homeland beyond their grasp....an emotion that has deep emotional resonance in present times.

As this film is about Afghan immigrants who came to India for employment and left families and homes back in their homeless, this painful situation is quite similar to whatever is happening with Afghan ppl these days. They are in pain and tears. So where ever they have taken shelters, those countries shouldn’t forget to be empathetic and kind towards such refugees as no one would willingly and happily leave their roots and motherland and just flee like this. Make sure you ppl don’t act racist and cruel with such homeless ppl in need.
