Awesome Half-Diminished Chord Voicing You Should Learn
Is it just me or is it sometimes tough to find a really great voicing for half-diminished chords?
This is one of my favorites that I think you should know.
We are actually basing it on the Locrian #2 scale because we have a natural 9, then the REAL TRICK is adding in the 11 for an extra “crunch”.
We can call these “crunch chords” or “crunch voicings”.

sometimes I will just leave the ninth out of my half diminished voicing because I don't always want that added color. Other times I will put in both a natural and a flat 9 so between the root and third you have 4 notes that are all a half step apart. If you play them on top of each other it's just an atonal cluster, but if you space them out you can still preserve the tonality of the half diminished chord and get this really cool haunting sonority.
I love d cluster too... Sounds smooth...🤗
Cool! So many choices! Do you have a problem deciding which one or just change up the next time around if you're playing something?
So basically a Gmin9 first inversion with a flatted fifth and drop the G out🤔?

May I ask why is it a half diminished chord?

It’s half diminished because the space between the f and a notes is a major third. A full finished chord consists of only minor thirds. A half finished chord is m3rd, m3rd, Major3rd - if he would have played an Ab at the top it would be a full diminished 7 chord. Hope that helps!

@@Jiveness thanks but I am concerning that the Db and F note is also a Major 3rd so I wonder is it a minor major 7th chord instead with m3 M3 and M3

Alot of music theory language is interchangeable, almost to the point of nauseum🤦lol. There's no need to get hung up on terminology if u can understand and explain how/why something could be called something else🤷. I say that because this chord could also be interpreted as a plain jane Gm9/11 with a flatted fifth, and just drop the G out and let the bass player aka me play it😂
