Also just a follow up thought- when you add the M7, that’s when it would really make sense to call the chord add9, for example, FMaj7(add9).

I’ve noticed contemporary jazz harmony tends to be more ‘shape’ based than cycles based. Also, more step-wise motion.

Hi Noah! The second chord is Gsus2/B in stead of /A. ¿Right?

If it's "over the third" isn't it just an Add2 in First Inversion?

Very nice chords movements Noah. May I know how do you use Chordie on this short video style? I can see that on your iPad the Chordie app is shoeing as well. It is like having your computer monitor sharing on your iPad? Because Chordie app is online for Mac abd windows computer. Pls keep showing us some cool and nice videos like Thad. Love so much all your videos contents. Very clean and very easy to understand all your materials. Cheers 👍🙏

So there's a lot of small mistakes in here, clearly not out of malice - this guy's good, but just so people don't get too confused: When he says to resolve it to a half step above he actually means that the bass line is going up chromatically and that would be your tonic - so if you had the third on the bottom, you'll be resolving to the fourth degree (bassline going up a half step, and the rest of the notes now play a non inverted chord). In other words, this is a very basic 5-1 progression, going from a first inversion 5 chord (without the dominant 7, hence the weaker "floatier" sound, and a 9th to add some texture - which is a very neo soul jazz thing to do) to the 1 chord, non inverted. This is a very common trick for leading the bass voice, and is very useful to know. And a little nitpick, I would 100% just call this an add9 chord. I know he wrote that he uses add9 as an extension of maj7 but in all situations I have ever been in my fellow bandmates referred to a chord with both the maj7 and 9th extensions as a major9 (maj7add9 is just very long and redundant, usually I'd even replace maj with a triangle), a chord with just the 9th as an add9 chord, and a sus2 is very specifically a chord with no 3rd, meaning it is not specifically a major or minor chord. This comes from the etymology of the term sus2/4 (haha amogus yeah funny) which stands for suspended - this was a technique in which you emphasized a dominant chord by adding internal motion from the fourth to the third degree after the chord arrives - basically you suspend the fourth degree before letting it resolve to the third, creating a dominant sound and then resolving the whole chord to the tonic. With a sus2 I've less classical examples, but its very common in folklore music to have major 2nds that resolve to a unison on the tonic chord. So basically - a suspended 2nd or 4th degree is a suspension of the third degree, as such, there shouldn't be another third degree in the chord. So, because this is very clearly an Fmajor sound, I would always call that an Fadd9/A and not an Fsus2/A which would imply that this is not a major chord. If you've read this far you're either a masochist, or have genuine interest in what I have to say. And so, I will also say that everything I have written is completely meaningless, you can call anything however you want - as long as the bassist knows what you're doing it's all good. This is how I would call things, but that is by no means universal, and nobody would care If I would call what I played played an F#mAdd9b13/E or banana soup chord, all that matters is how it sounds. This guy sounds good and I'd love to shred some tunes with him sometime. Cheers.

Thanks Angel, it really is! Yeah I was thinking intervallicaly in terms of the bass line, rather than functionally, so the A in bottom of the first chord voice leads up to Bb.

How is that the major key directly above? Didn’t you just play F (sus2) - Bb major7?

  • @NoahKellman

Yeah true- my bad I was thinking in terms of the bass line. Bass line moves up a half step and voice leads to Bb Major- so voice leasing is great from the A to Bb.

I beg to differ, it's time to break away from (for instance) the minor 9/11 conventions. A part of neo soul would push it to be more progressive to stay relevant, which is borrowed from R&B tradition. My question is, what would you think neo soul would like if the early 2000s didn't exist? I'm from Philadelphia BTW for context
