Dad always used the bungee cords when we camped to absorb the stress on the tarps, but he instilled to put the hooks ( open end out ) so when the wind blew the sharp end of the didn't scrape whst was below and wear/tear what it rubbed against. Square knots are cool, but often hard to untie if they have been loaded. For most camp set up purposes a sheet bend, or better yet, slippery sheet bend works awesome. Especially where you were using 550 to secure your tarp to the stake.

Very nice Kenny. I do this configuration for years now. I also use the same kind of cheap tarp that I buy in the DIY shop. I don't understand why some people want to buy those expensive tent tarps from 100 till 200 dollars... In the summer a diagonal tarp setup also works perfectly. It creates a nice 'kitchen' area.
@TheMrhycannon7 жыл бұрын
Bungee cords are great.. I use them for dining canopies at home as well as around camp.. In a high wind they allow the tarp/tent/canopy to move without anything bending, breaking or pulling loose.. I weathered one night of storms while everyone around was being blown over or away..
@melaniedeare542710 жыл бұрын
Ingenious. Never would have thought to do this. Would be especially nice to have the extra cover when it rains. Thanks!

Good video. You have a natural knack for making them. Crisp. Direct. Not much extraneous talk that makes so many otherwise good videos boring. The negative comments about tenting under trees are not practical. Just follow cautions that hammock hangers practice. Stay away from dead trees and dead limbs. Also, I suggest using straps around the trees as most parks don't allow strings or ropes around trees. As an old man who doesn't like stooping, bending, squatting or getting on the ground for anything, I would hang my tarp 5 or six feet high. Also, a tarp large enough to extend over the tent as extra protection from leaks. Ignore trolls. Just focus on the larger number of positive or at least polite comments.
@DonP_is_lostagain
9 жыл бұрын
Larry Vickery Good advice, but for a tarp it doesn't matter as the tarp doesn't put stress on the bark. I'm a hammocker and the straps we use are for hanging the hammock itself. Our tarps usually use braided line like Amsteel, or ZingIt or LashIt. I personally use ZingIt as a continuous tarp ridgeline and haven't had issues with park rangers yet.

I use the same idea for a ridge-line, but a larger trap allows you to take it right over the top of your tent. That gives one more layer of shade as well as one more layer to keep the heat of the morning sun from heating your tent up too early in the day.

I got my Hillary at Sears for 50 bucks and camped a lot over 24 years. I gave it away intact to go to a bigger tent. It's still in use. Good advice in this vid. Thx for the share. I often camp in rain. Tarps are a must have.

A very good tutorial. Try to avoid square knots as they are very difficult to remove when they are tighten or become wet. You might be able to save that tarp's lining with some spray-on contact cement/glue!

thanks for the great info. I have been doing that for about a year now. I use a 10x20 camo tarp and cover the tent as well. it keeps the tent protected and also gives me the extra vestibule storage area. plus u can guy out the tarp over the tent for extra airflow.

Great configuration! I like the idea of separating the sleep area from the "common" area. Another thing you can do is add a large mosquito net under the tarp. Whenever I camp with a tarp (preferred, actually) I'll hang a no see-um under my tarp and stake down the four corners; small lightweight stakes came with my netting. My tarp is large enough for my bedroll, a camp chair and if I car camp, a table. I bought a Coleman cot and may take it on my next outing. Great ideas and I like how simple your knots are. Another idea is rather than use a carabiner on the first tree a simple Canadian jam knot can save you weight.

There is nothing better than bungee cords in windy areas.. I use them in place of guy ropes on everything: tent, dining canopy, gazebo, outdoor shower, craft booth, fire canopy ( way above fire in rain).. I lived in a tent when I traveled with a carnival and had bungee cords on everything.. We had an extremely bad storm at one craft fair.. When it was over my set-up was the only one left standing..

I've got some ball bungees for tarps that I haven't used yet. Look them up if you don't know what they are. I guess if they're not robust enough it should be easy to make some out of proper bungee cord - as long as it's not too thick to get it through the tarp's eye doubled up.

We all seem to be in love with 550 Cord, which is strong, but relatvely expensive, especially when cut up in short pieces. The other day, I remembered what we usedback In the 1960s, when I was a scout. what we used for most of the applications for paracord, Is Jute binders' twine. For most applications, by far, it is plenty strong enough. It costs about one tenth of 550cord. There is nothing in your video that Binder twine couldn't do as well, or as durably.

I just camped in the Pocono mountains in Eastern PA. Great time and luckily not very high winds at all. My problem with securing a tent to the ground in such a place is that it's in the mountains, the soil is FILLED with rocks. There was no way of driving a stake into the ground. My metal stakes bent like aluminum foil lol. Like I said luckily we had decent weather but had we endured storms our tents would have been tumbleweeds.

Dad always used the bungee cords when we camped to absorb the stress on the tarps, but he instilled to put the hooks ( open end out ) so when the wind blew the sharp end of the didn't scrape whst was below and wear/tear what it rubbed against. Thanks for the video !
Very clever, hadn't thought of adding an extra bit to my tent will definitely do this next camping trip. Thank for the tip.
Square knots are cool, but often hard to untie if they have been loaded. For most camp set up purposes a sheet bend, or better yet, slippery sheet bend works awesome. Especially where you were using 550 to secure your tarp to the stake.
Hey Kenny...I just subscribed. I just had to comment and tell you what a pleasure it was to watch you explain this great idea for car camping!!:) You're a very polite and smart young man. You're an asset to your generation and I hope an inspiration to many. Thank you for sharing this idea with me and your camping expertise. I'm going camping with my family in about a week and I just might have to give this one a try! Also...thanks for the knot tying tips. Very easy to understand! Thanks again:)
Bungee cords are great.. I use them for dining canopies at home as well as around camp.. In a high wind they allow the tarp/tent/canopy to move without anything bending, breaking or pulling loose.. I weathered one night of storms while everyone around was being blown over or away..

I have to watch it again every summer to refresh how to do that, thank you
Favourited. I liked the knot tying tutorial! Thanks

Hay thanks for this it was exactly what I was trying to sort out for 1 nighters fishing in the central Queensland dams and rivers.
Well done! I use the same setup at times. I am more of a hammock camper, but this was a good lesson.
I would put the bungee hook pointing outward from the tent so it doesn't tear the tent when the wind moves it around. Great vid kid!
Great video and you did a great job of explaining everything. Never used a canopy before, I will next time. Liked the bungee cord and using a clip ring. Thank you.
Great idea! Would like to see if that idea to extend to attach one end of the tarp to the back of an SUV, so perhaps higher up on the tree, but so you can have a vestibule walkway from the vehicle to your tent.
Why would anybody give a thumbs down on this great informative video tks for sharing great tips 👍 another great tip is to put a thermal heat blanket over the tent and part of your tarp if you need to .The silver heat blanket over the text will keep in the warmth if its a cold day..
As always, great teaching and instructional video. Your awesome.
Awesome man! Thanks for the idea.
I usually buy a big enough tarp to cover the tent as well. Most nylon tents are only water resistant, not water proof. Also pitch your tent on slightly higher ground so water drains away from the tent. Still a very good video, especially the knots.
Thank you for teaching me some invaluable camping tips!
An enjoyable video by someone who clearly enjoys camping. I'll that tarp idea for car camping. Cheers mate.
Great job. Really liked the quick knot lessons and that you used the correct names of the knots. Those are some of my favorite knots also. Sort of a lost art now days. Curious if this was a video project to help earn your Eagle Rank ?
Good video! I like the way you set up the tarp and make the knots.
Yup, thank you. Knots practiced and will be used when I'm camping in France soon.
a good few years old but just found this.. even for being 'not an instruction video' thanks for the rope instructions ;) awesome video!
This was actually such a great video and very helpful (plus 1 sub (: )
Great job, appreciate the helpful hints.👍
in hot weather you can suspend your tarp 4-6 inches above the tent. it will stay alot cooler
Good review! It also comes in handy for people with leaky tents if you have a much larger tarp to put over the tent too. Also to keep the tent dry for repacking it away. Para cord or bank line is better then bungee, much safer.
This was like time @camp...! Thank you for this video...!! 🙃😃👣
Great tips I would cover the tent also with the tarp all the way to the ground keep them coming good job!!!
Great video! I think I would be able to do those knots. Btw, I’m a 69 years young couch potato grandma that just likes to be in the outdoors doing some camp cooking, lol!
Great ideas... a beautiful setup for combo!
Good on you mate. You have some great ideas. Greetings from Australia.
Going to use this when I camp with my kiddo, thanks Kenny keep up the great work man!
I just came across your brilliant video! You are an excellent instructor - thanks for sharing :)
Going on my first camping trip soon - so happy I found this channel!!
Raise the ridge line and you can build your fire underneath. When I car camp, I bring a 20x30 tarp and set it as high as I can (15+ feet maybe) and can have bon fires underneath. Real nice if it rains the whole weekend
Brilliant, great explanation. Thank you.
Awsome Info. Thanks Mate, the knot around the tree is very handy, cheers.
Excellent - thanks this will be great on our next camping trip :)
Good onya! buddy!! Keep it up, you know what you're doing, and sharing it, our bonus.
Some good ideas. There are some campgrounds that won't let you tie anything to tree's tho.. This would be a great idea for when it's raining so you could cook your meals..
I've got some ball bungees for tarps that I haven't used yet. Look them up if you don't know what they are. I guess if they're not robust enough it should be easy to make some out of proper bungee cord - as long as it's not too thick to get it through the tarp's eye doubled up.
love your videos so young but so old in knowledge! Thank you 🙌🙌🙌
Very good! Clear, informative, and well made. I will be watching more of your work.
Very well done. Like you and your set-up.

And 1/10 the price. Ergo wear gloves.
Great information. I recommend the Nite Ize figure 9s if you don't want to mess with knots or caribiners. Great video.
Great idea... Great tips! Thanks!
Great tips! Thanks for sharing
Some nice tips there buddy, which I will use next time I tent...like those clips! Brilliant!!:) GREAT JOB, and you were slow enough for us to follow....NICE!:) Have fun camping! If you use the bungie...always point the ends outward, not inward, as winds can rub and catch your tent and create a hole...:) Had that happen! But we get big winds here....LOL
Great advice, keep up the good work, and happy camping.
Nice set up. Great explanation. Thorough! Good teacher
You made a new subscriber out of me. Great work on the video. I appreciate you taking the time to show us. Great knots by the way. I will be putting them to good use. Thanks again.
Thank you, for the extra room. Good job explaining. Loved the tutorial.peace
Like the tarp setup. Wish I'd known about this concept years ago when we car camped with a canvas tent. Cooking breakfast in the rain would have been so much easier. :-) Enjoy your vids, even though we don't camp away from home these days. Have a spot behind our home much like your personal space, incl creek. That's our bug-out location (backup plan) if need arises. Hut is = old travel trailer. Adding many of your ideas to the spot, as well. Thanks for sharing. PS still have that canvas tent.
Great job, you sound like a pro to me! With your great tips, I will be a happy camper!
You are correct it is an Awesome Car Camping Tent Setup Great Idea, I will be using that one.. Cheers,
Great video. never would have thought to put a tarp tent up to a regular tent. thanks
Wow, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for showing the knot tying, which I didn't know before, and the other tips. Excellent information.
Yay! I've been checking the channel everyday for a new video! :D Love the setup!
Nice set up and we'll explained. Another for and you could sleep under the tarp too. Good job
Very good. Thank you!
