MY CAR CAMPING KITCHEN (Cheap Vandwelling/Overlanding Cooking Setup)

In this video I go through my camp kitchen/cooking setup when I'm SUV camping. I cover the tables I use for preparing the food and putting my stoves on, the utensils I carry, the pots and pans I use, and more.
You can check out my new online store here: kamchatkagear.com
Here's a list of most of the gear I show in the video. I don't include links to obvious/uninteresting things like the knives or plate. The items below appear roughly in the order that they appeared in the video. (Note: All of the Amazon links below are affiliate links.)

I’m a social worker. I sometimes have to help someone to get ready to be living out of their car. Your videos helped me to reassure a woman fleeing domestic violence. She was traveling to another state to go be with a cousin. It made her see that it is possible to car camp and be ok. And not too expensive. Thanks

Like you said, when you've got a space as small as a RAV4, you really want to keep organized. I'm a neat/tidy person in general, but it's double important when I'm on the road. If you don't put just a couple of things away, your living space is all of a sudden cluttered. Thanks Carol.

This is the most practical and well organized kitchen I’ve seen. It’s got everything easy to find, and it ticks away when you want the space. Nothing unnecessary, and none of that grey water stuff to deal with. Plus the container when covered can be a work station by itself.

Fascinating - brings back so many memories of when my husband and I would camp, car and small tent, in the Drakensberg Mountains here in South Africa. We were nowhere near as organised as this. Cooking equipment was packed in one large cardboard box and foodstuffs in another. I had a small notebook with about 10 recipes for one-pot meals. Your hanging table is super.

First let me say, great job on the video! Now, about that yellow funnel... I have one just like it, and mine was made by Coleman. It's purpose is for pouring white gas into lanterns and small backpacking stoves like the Peak One. When I first got into backpacking back in the early 80's, I bought a Coleman Peak One lantern and stove, which were designed for backpacking but are way too heavy by today's standards. I am a 65 y/o retired professional District Fire Chief, with a bad back so no more backpacking for me. The lantern and stove have been relegated to my truck camping gear and still work just fine.

Well done. I do my camping in a 2004 Ford Explorer. Just spent a week up huckleberry picking. Love the car mounted table. Try cordage that is less dynamic, that'll help with the give when in use. I am big on cooking, so my setup has a few different items in it, but couldn't live without my scrapers. Keep it up. Appreciate your reasonable use of commercials without making things unwatchable.

You're definitely organized and I believe you covered the description and placement of everything well. Overall, it seemed to be a great video for someone to watch if they weren't exactly sure about how or what to pack as far as cooking goes. Nice job on that! Organization is important, especially in areas with very limited space, and based on what I could see of the inside of your car in the video, I assume everything that's going on the trip requires the same pack and compress method as the kitchen. For you to have put the time into coming up with a way to strategically place everything and making a video about it, I assume that you have gone on these outings more than once or twice. Like I said, it's a great video, but I have a suggestion that could completely change your trips in a very positive way. The first thing that came to my mind as I began watching your video was that there is no way I could be comfortable in that environment even for a day, not to mention for a month at a time. Not only would the the sleeping arrangements be a problem for me, just being in the car with everything packed around me would make it a very unenjoyable trip for me. I also wouldn't like the feeling of being out of space in case there was some kind of emergency or reason that came up where I needed or wanted to fit something or somebody else that I met in the car. I've just never been comfortable in confined spaces, but I am familiar with limited packing space for trips and there's an easy, not too expensive way around it (especially if you're any good at converting things into what you need). My experience with limited luggage space came from road trips on my motorcycle which basically includes a couple saddlebags and a luggage box. That's way less space than a car but you still don't have to be confined or feel packed in with the luggage on your trip. You seem to be somewhat creative and that's about all it takes (well, other than a little money) to be a lot more comfortable on your trips. They actually sell small campers that you can pull behind a motorcycle. Most of the ones I've seen are really nice, but they seem a bit overpriced for what you get, especially when you can buy a small lightweight utility trailer for very little. Once you've got that, you would probably be amazed how easy it is to customize it to your exact needs, including foldout sides with supports under them for a full size bed on one side, an actual kitchen with a sink and countertop space around your stove if you wanted that, or even an area to sit back comfortably and enjoy whatever you like to do on a rainy day. Plus all the storage space you'd have while traveling. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that because I believe you'd really enjoy it if you tried it and if you decide to consider doing something like that or have any questions about how you could build a certain part of it, I could also probably give you some ideas or opinions for that too.

I used plastic containers similar to what you have when I started 1.5 years ago. After 6 months I had my organization to where I liked it. I then made wooden boxes using 1/4" plywood or mdf or pine to replace them and gained a lot of space. Where I had 2 plastic containers, I now have 1 box. It's heavier, maybe a pound or 2 but it's all about maximizing space. And contrary to what some people say, there's no reason to be using 1/2" or 3/4" for boxes, mine are solid at 1/4". I have the bigger brother to your stove and it's very well built. Just don't use it for heat, it does not burn fuel 100% and at a minimum you'll have one heck of a big headache.

Thank you very much. My best friend for cooking are wooden spoons and spatulas. I just feel like they are so 'healthy' and friendly. I have never seen a little stove like you have, interesting.

Hey Tristan,I noticed you said you do really care for cooking, try using a Hot Logic Mini. You plug it in to the cigarette lighter, put your eats in the HLM and just forget about it. It takes about 3-4 hours to cook things (like chicken, rice, eggs, soups, etc). It's very space saving, cooks awesome, and great to know that when you get to where you're going you're meal is already ready. No prep is needed. I also should share that the great thing about it also is that you can't really over cook which is great, and that it only uses 48watts,so the HLM can be used even with the engine off,and it won't kill the battery.

The funnel is a kerosene fuel funnel. Makes filling oil lamps easy. That's why it's yellow as well. Great vid. Got some ideas. Thank you.

Good video. The solution to your small gas stove is four large stakes that hold the base and the Stanley Cook pot up right. The Stanley pot is my most loved cook pot, very versatile. GSI manufacture a mug that sits perfectly on the base of the Stanley, the plastic mugs are handy but take up valuable storage space so they are replaced by the GSI, making it possible to keep my firelighting kit inside the Stanley. Your setup is great and you can see that you're enjoying the wonderful outdoors. Be happy stay well.

Thank you for sharing your informative video. As all RV/van/mini van people tell you, get the things that you can multitask with. I carry two large Friz bees instead of plastic plates. Have curved edge to avoid spillovers of food, easy cleanup and good for exercise later... Just a thought. Thanks again.

@@SUVRVing You can place some napkins, two sets of utensils, some salt and pepper packets from fast food place inside the Frisbees and rubber band them together. The frisbees are stiffer then some plastic dishes.

Ikea sells a set of nylon cooking utensils that are "miniature" sized (I found them in the Kids section) but you can use them for actual cooking because they are made from the same nylon material as the full size set (both of which includes a bonus set of "toaster tongs" that really you can use for anything.) Both sets sell for about $0.79 cents for each set, name of the set is GNARP

Nice video, I use clear plastic bins similar to yours but the tops are clear as well to store my “metal” cooking items, plates, cups, utensils and cast iron fry pan and small Dutch oven. This combination works for sanitation purposes. Leave the bin out in the sun and everything is sanitized by heat and sun light. One more comment about the Stanley cooking pot, I have used mine daily for about two months and now the bottom on the inside is deteriorating, I thought it was one piece but the joint is now rusting and impossible to clean. I discarded it, looking for something better. Looking forward to the next video!

Huh, interesting about using a clear top on the bin. Good idea. That's weird about your Stanley pot. Mine is still going strong and shows no sign of breakdown. I'm guessing I've used it 50+ times?

Enjoyed your video and demonstration - In 60 years of camping, I've never seen a dual-fuel butane/propane stove before. As an Asian family (I'm the token white guy) we have the butane-only stove for tableside cooking, but I wouldn't camp with butane in the cold due to issues that propane doesn't have. If you have a screen in the bottom of that yellow funnel, that would be for filtering white gas into your stove or lantern - ours is red. We use both washable and disposable utensils too - PLEASE DON'T FEED THE TROLLS.

Oh hey, I have a tip for you regarding dirty dishes. If you cover a plate with plastic wrap you can set your food on top and discard with very little waste but it really depends on what you are eating, not great for if you have to cut your food. Additionally, if you immediately clean your utensils with a baby wipe followed by a lite rinse then wipe dry, you're good to go. No need for a tub of sudsy dish water not to mention the water waste. Throwing away plastic these is taboo. Keep adventuring!
