Awesome Bass Lesson For Working On EVERYTHING (with a simple Jazz Ballad!!)

Музыка

Today we’re going to look at some simple bass practice you can employ for working on almost all areas of your bass playing and musicianship. We’re going to work on learning the notes of the fretboard, your harmony knowledge, arpeggios, scales and pretty much EVERYTHING.
We’re going to do this in a very relaxed and simple way by improvising bass lines on a jazz ballad from a basic chord sheet. For this lesson we’ll use one of the most popular jazz songs of all time: Misty by Erroll garner.

    Hey, keep up the great work! People think I’m some kind of pro even through I’ve only been playing for a few years. I’m definitely intermediate. I watched and rewatched your videos and everything I know is from your teachings. Don’t stop until you can’t physically play. But still find a way. It’s been great therapy for me.

    Great ideas in here! I’ve been using an app called iReal Pro to practice standards (I’m still very much a beginner with jazz) and I have been doing kind of a bastardized less structured version of some of what you mentioned, but you have some really nice ideas there. I really like the idea of using a single string.

    Nice Video, I have to mention that sightreading isnt good for memorizing the tones on the fretboard in my opinion. As a youth I could sightread and play any classical piece, Ive never seen before, on Cello but had no idea which names the notes were, or their relations. I just knew where the note on the fretboard is, based on the writte note, but not the name. Had to get basic theory down again for starting bass then

  • @stanmanjam

    @stanmanjam

    Are you saying you didn't know the names of the notes on the stave or the 'cello? That seems pretty unusual for anyone learning classical music. For me, they key to memorising the notes (by name as well as by their position on the stave) on the fretboard, is to say the name of the note as I read it (usuallt before I actually play it). It's a slow process, but necessary if you're going to be a rounded player. There are three aspects to the sight reading pitch (rhythm is a different beast) - the name of the note on the stave, the name of the note on the fretboard and relating the position on the fretboard to the position on the stave. Very often we learn two of the three of these and then become frustrated because adding the third into the equation requires us to go back to learning very slowly.

    Interesting problem to have. I think most people learn the staff (letter names, etc,) first, then spend a lot of time getting past that translation layer to make the connection more direct between the staff and fretboard. I didn't realize that it was possible to skip that middle step.

    On my iPad, the piano in the track overpowers your bass sound, so that it bass really gets lost in the mix, so that it becomes impossible to follow your examples.

    This will always be the case with bass and tracks on a mobile device. I actually ramp up the mids a lot so the bass has a relatively crappy sound but cuts through more but on a mobile device you’re going to find everything below 120hz is missing. I have a video from about a month ago on tone that will answer a lot of why that is for you. In this video the track is mixed as low as I can go while retaining the tonality of the piece. This is just a consequence of pathetic modern media.
