Tritone Substitution...Explained! (Jazz Harmony For Bass Guitar)
Музыка
Today we're going to look at a little jazz harmony/music theory and delve into the Tritone Substitution!
Tritone Substitutions are incredibly common in jazz writing and playing. We're going to look at what they are, why they work and how they are used.
I'll be demonstrating the substitutions on bass guitar as both chords and arpeggios. In upcoming weeks I'll also be demonstrating how we can take this tritone sub concept and apply it to both walking bass lines and bass solos.

It took me years to understand this content, but I can say, as someone who knows the subject matter well these days, that I’ve never heard anybody do as great of a job as Mark in explaining it. Mark truly has a knack for explanation. I learned the exact same material presented here from a teacher years ago, before the Internet, and then it took me years of experience to understand what the hell he was trying to get me to understand. You can’t present a laundry list of potential chord substitutions in various progressions without the understanding of the derivations from the applicable theory and expect full understanding. Well done, Mark !! 👍👨🏻✌️
You have the best bass instruction channel on the internet.
Not afraid to fast talk harmony concepts... Not at all watered down; good content for us intermediate players. Too much YT bass content is beginner centric.
Thank you for that lesson. It was indeed a 'Light bulb moment' for me.
Great explanation . . looking forward to the walking bass applications!
Very nice lesson! Just the right speed and very thorough. I finally get those devil tones!
Great lesson Mark. I kind of knew what tritone subs were, but combining this with secondary dominants was really eye-opening. Now I can understand jazz charts better. Throw some dominant extensions in there also explains what was always a mystery to me about how piano and guitar players came up with the chords they do when comping.
I will need to watch this over and over again until like you say it clicks. tae daaa moment is what I need at this stage.

Yes, a little fast, but GREAT info.
I've studied this many times and kinda got it and used it but this lesson was like the mortal combat finishing move! Demystification complete!
