(Avatar) The Last Airbender - Caravan of Garbage

Ойын-сауық

Before the 2024 live action Netflix reboot in 2010 Hollywood attempted the impossible, a direct live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Turns out. It was impossible. With many considering this to be M. Night Shyamalan's worst directorial effort by a long way putting a stop to any potential sequel or new live action adaptation until recently. The bit with Aang teaching the earthbender prisoners to use the earth all around them is my favourite example of the movie missing the point. In the show the earthbenders are imprisoned on a metal ship in the middle of the ocean specifically so they can't earthbend. The movie puts them in a conventional prison and then acts like none of them ever thought about earthbending until Aang arrived.

  • @CitizenKen1

    Yeh the same scene highlights limits from a technical standpoint point like, how their solution have air bending on screen is to have Aang swirl up dust, to the fire that doesn’t illuminate the space around it, to even the congo line of earthbenders getting gettin a tiny rock to float through the air and hit someone. Especially when anyone there could have picked up and thrown the rock to achieve the same effect! It’s the epitome of inept blockbuster filmmaking.

    at around 6:25 the boys talk about how its difficult to know geography and the distance traveled and where they are and all that. This made me realize that it was really helpful of the show to literally show us a map of the world before each episode, and often times the characters would pull out a diegetic map and literally show their intended route, and i think that really helped the show succeed, even in a subtle way

    The Avatar trilogy is nonsensical. They go to space and hang out with tall blue monkeys in the first. Then in the second there's no returning characters or links of any kind as far as I can see - it's about this magical bald child who controls his wind very well or whatever, then for the third they go back to the blue monkey world and swim around for a bit. Absolutely baffling

  • @reubenfong1961

    @reubenfong1961

    In the original anime, it was far more fleshed out. The monkeys were developed as a civilization who were very agriculture-based and against war whatsoever, so their mythology restrained them from ever fighting against an enemy (which was the core moral dilemma for the conflict). As they were farmers and not warriors, this eventually lead Avatar to have the working title of 'Blue Harvest' which coincidentally was the working title for Star Wars: A New Hope.

    Fun fact: The Dragon Spirit was an original creation by M Night Shamalan for this movie. They were based on Ran and Shaw who first appeared in Season 3 Episode 13. Initially they considered to add both Red and Blue dragon as spirits. But red is difficult colour to film. So they picked Blue Dragon as spirit guide for Aang. This led to the working title being "Blue Harvest", which was also the working title of original Star Wars.

In the show it was set on a metal oil rig out at sea,...and here it's a bloody ROCK PIT. FIGURE IT OUT EARTHBENDERS....also the fact that it then takes 5 guys to move one damn rock. The reason Zuko demands to see all of the elderly Water tribe members is because the last Avatar, known to be an Airbender, was presumed dead 100 years ago. The next Avatar in the cycle would have been born a Waterbender shortly after and would now be about 100 years old if still alive.

    One thing that the movie changes that i never hear people talk about that infuriates me is that, in the show, fire benders are the only benders that dont need to have their element near them to bend it. Because the original writers understood that fire is not nearly as omnipresent as water, earth, and air so it would be very limiting and stupid that they always need to be right next to a camp fire. But in the movie they do always need to be near a fire and its considered world changing at the end that zuko can create fire when thats just how it works in the show for everyone.

    He's in a new movie where he plays a farmer who's wronged and turns into an assassin. They're using a John Wick-style filter to make everything look dark and gritty. They were then going to call it "Blue-Tinted Farmer", but that's too close to Blue Harvest, which was the original name of Star Wars.

    I think it was pretty funny that because the bending was so slow that they asked why they aren't paired up with some guy who can just run over and punch the other guy, when this is literally a thing in the Wheel of Time TV series. In the books the Aes Sedai (the magic users of the universe essentially) always have a companion called a Warder. The Warder uses conventional weapons and acts as a bodyguard, someone to watch their back etc. In the TV adaptation though, they made "weaving" (spellcasting) so slow and involved that there's literally a scene in the first season where a character is standing in the middle of an attack and doing big swirly movements for what feels like minutes while her warder runs back and forth frantically knocking down the individual attackers that are trying to run in and stab her while she's in the middle of the dance routine that will EVENTUALLY get the spell off. In the books it's all down mentally and spells are near instantaneous, but on the show it requires elaborate choreographed dance moves.

    I was the prime age for the Avatar tv show, so when I saw there was a movie being made, I was so excited. But then I started seeing these commercials on Nickelodeon where M. Night Shyamalan was talking and doing the behind the scenes stuff. And in one he started going over 3 key changes that he made for the movie. 1. Aang would be pronounced like Ong (uh okay that's weird) 2. The fire benders could not produce fire from their bodies, they had to use a fire that's already burning (ehhh that's kinda stupid but a bearable change I guess) and 3. There would be no kyoshi warriors because they "bogged" down the story (HELL NO GOODBYE). So I never went to go see it when it was in theaters Anyways I've still never seen this movie but this is one of my favorite caravans of garbages now
