It has some extremely mature themes that most children won’t pick up on! I watched when I was younger and rewatched recently at the age of 24 and I picked up so many mature elements and themes since I’m older! There’s actually ALOT of life wisdom that you can learn from this show if you pay close enough attention!

FYI, the lore-drops and writing in this show are exquisitely paced. Your questions will be answered at the right time. Trust me. Since it's not directly addressed in the show, Aang's tattoos denote his rank of Airbending Master. He is one of the youngest airbenders to ever get his tattoos, at age 12. Appa flies by airbending. Sky bison are the original airbenders.

Midnight sun, also known as the polar day, is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in the Arctic and Antarctic circles. It happens when the Earth's tilt relative to the plane of its orbit causes at least one 24-hour period of daylight and night in every year. During the polar summer, the sun stays above the horizon 24 hours a day, meaning no sunrise or sunset, just constant daylight. When midnight sun is seen in the Arctic, the sun appears to move from left to right. The light from the midnight sun is similar to the “golden hour” just after sunrise or just before sunset.

Fire is based on Northern Shaolin Air is based on Baguazhang Water is based on Tai Chi Earth is based on Hung Gar All music in it is original. Great soundtrack. Arrow on Aang's head mean he has reach the title of Airbending Master. Appa's arrow is just fur pattern. Most creatures in this world are made up of 2 or more animals from our would. Appa is bison and manatee. This is a cartoon not a true anime but it's beloved by anime fans so much that most considered it a honorary anime. This is 1 of the greatest shows to be made. And in most people view (me included) it's the best cartoon to ever be made.

Tbh, I’ve always considered this a Western made anime. I’ve always thought saying that it is not an anime because it was made in America is an invalid argument. America popularized film and most film genres made today are heavily influenced by Western Films so an action movie made in Bollywood is still an action movie even though it’s made in a different part of the world. The same is true for anime imo. You can be heavily influenced by Japanese anime and still make an anime in your home country. This show is heavily influenced by Japanese anime through its art style, animation style, storytelling mechanics. The only thing that truly separates it from what others consider true anime is the fact that it was made in America, there’s not an obscene amount of blood, and they don’t scream out their special moves. Everything else is literally influenced by anime so it’s an anime

Just wanna add that Baguazhang and Tai Chi are not "martial arts" in the same way something like Karate or Tae Kwon Do would be. The Chinese believe combat extends beyond the physical realm and that one needs to battle the spiritual and mental worlds as well. This is known as "Neijia". Furthermore, Baguazhang and Tai Chi are a specific type of Neijia known as "Wudangquan", although the terms are often used interchangeably nowadays. Other Neijia that aren't Wudanquan include Aikido, Qigong, Liuhebafa, Bak Mei Pai and Ziranmen.

@@nubbylittlecat1753 so let me get this straight. I just said that it not being a Japanese made anime doesn’t qualify as a legitimate argument since I can make a film or an animation of any genre in any part of the world and your argument is still that it’s not a Japanese made show? lol I think you missed the point. Tell me, do you watch international film? When I watch a horror movie from Sweden, am I not watching a horror movie cause it’s not American made? Should I not consider it to be horror since it “looks similar to American horror”? What about if I watch a zombie movie from Germany? Is that not a Zombie movie? What about my original example of an action movie from Bollywood? Is this no longer an action movie because it “looks similar” but isn’t from the home country where the first of that genre was made? Do you not see how flawed that logic is?

I'm glad you guys like it already I usually recommend people to watch the first 3 episodes and see what they think. But the shows story gets really interesting at episode 12 and on. And each season gets even better. What I really like about this show is for a "kids show" it's surprisingly deep at times & the characters are complex, they aren't all one dimensional. It's the characters that really get you invested in the story. Yeah some of the press things you were talking about for the Netflix show one element is an early growth moment for Sokka's character that apparently they are gonna exclude (it's not just that but it was the way they explained why they were cutting it) but it doesn't hurt to show characters that have flaws or have backwards thinking that are shown they are wrong and change their minds.

Ya they pretty much said that they wanted to update things for the times which also meant excluding Sokka's early sexism. His realization on his "sexism is bad" was one of my favorite episodes.

Fun fact about atlab! : All of the element benders are based on martial art methods! Air benders are based on a type of fighting that use a LOT of evasive maneuvers which is why when fighting zuko he kept avoiding him (ba gua zhang) Fire bending uses a lot of aggressive movements and is based on northern shaolin movements! Water benders are actually based on what you typically see old chinese people do in parks (tai chi) And lastly earth bending is based on hung gar forms! (Sorry i couldnt explain much on shaolin, hung gar, tai chi idk much of martial arts 😭)

16:38 Zuko earlier mentioned that the fire sages foretold that the Avatar was the "last air bender" that's why he believes that he found the Avatar, because he found an airbender. The Avatar had been missing for over 100 years so it makes sense for most people who believe he's still alive to assume he's really old. The only reason he isn't is because he was encased and preserved in an iceberg.

Avatar Last Airbender bending's are based on real world martial arts. The Bending List is in Avatar cycle order. Fire bending is based on Northern Shaolin. Fire Nation culture largely draws from Imperial Japan, as per behind the scenes interviews on the originally released dvds. Air bending is based on Circle motions of Baguazhang. Air Nomad culture is based on Tibet, as per behind the scenes interviews on the originally released dvds. Water bending is based on Tai Chi. The Water tribes are based on Inuit culture, as per behind the scenes interviews on the originally released dvds. Earth bending is based on the martial art of Hung Gar. Earth Kingdom is largely based on Chinese culture, as per behind the scenes interviews on the originally released dvds. All music in this show is original, and was created for this show. The soundtrack is beautiful, incredible and perfectly suited to the show.. The Arrow tattoo's on Aang's head, arms, legs, and back are the proof of fact markings, on his body, which directly indicate that he has reached and obtained / is the full rank of an Airbending Master. Appa's arrow is just Appa’s fur pattern. Most creatures in this world are made up of 2 or more animals from our world. Appa is a combination of both a bison and manatee. “…Power in fire-bending comes from the breath. Not the Muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body. The breath energy then extends past the limbs and becomes fire. …” [Uncle Iroh episode 1 Avatar the Last Airbender] Fire Benders create fire by igniting their own breath energy as it extends past their limbs. Focused breath energy enables the fire bender to control the created fire. Unfocused fire creation is dangerous, wild, and destructive. This is an American cartoon, which originally aired on Nickelodeon beginning in 2005, so approximately 19 years ago on February 22nd 2005. (Netflix is launching the live action version on February 22nd 2024 in honor of its 19th year anniversary. Avatar the last Airbender is not an anime. English is the original audio, and the creators are Americans. This show is NOT dubbed at all. Season 1 has 20 episodes originally aired in 2005-2006; Season 2 is also 20 episodes and aired from 2006-2007; Season 3 has 21 episodes and aired from 2007-2008. When watching on Netflix, all the multi-part episodes tend to be combined, so you will see a different episode count. The finale is 4 episodes (I.e. episodes 58-61; aka season 3 episodes 18-21)which all aired as a single 93 minute movie, in primetime, in 2008. It was a HUGE event on Nickelodeon. Still one of their highest watched airings ever! Nothing, is superlative in this show. The amount of tie ins, call backs, and fore shadowing, which occurs is astounding. Every time you watch this show, you the viewer, will see more connections, more fore shadowing and nuance. This show is amazing to the 9th degree, in that way. Enjoy the journey. No filler in this show. Only episode 11, the least liked episode of the series could possibly be considered filler, but even this episode gets a call back in episode 57 (I.e. Season 3 episode 17). Episode 11 is disliked because it was the episode, after its original airing, which aired whenever, and I mean whenever, there was no new episode for a given week. Fans all excited for a new Episode tune in and groan, grumble, grumble, it is episode 11, again, and again, and again, ad infinitum!!! It was as if Nickelodeon was playing a Groundhog Day movie joke on Avatar the Last Airbender Fans. Episode 11 is fine on first viewing, or on a full rewatch of the series. It is the most stand alone episode of the series, but the fact that it was ALWAYS the episode aired, when there was no new episode for a given week, caused fans to see it as the worst episode of the series, and dislike it because of how often it was aired and used by Nickelodeon. Part of the major excitement for Episode 12, was IT was episode 12! Finally!!! Also Episode 12 is one of the best episodes of season 1, and in the top 10, for me, of the whole show. I can not express how happy and blown away by Episode 12, all the fans were, when it finally, aired originally. Some of that was Hooray!, We finally are getting a new episode, continuing the story, and part was Episode 12 itself in its own amazing way. Enjoy the ride. This show is fantastic.

This is easily one of my favorite shows ever! It's really good & i highly recommend you continue watching, it just gets better as it goes on. As for the movie that shall not be named, if you ever want to see why people hate it, finish this season first & then watch the movie. It was supposed to be a trilogy, but the movie did so badly that they just couldn't make the other 2. How they managed to screw up so badly is beyond me.

Please watch the whole thing! It's considered one of if not the best animated shows of all time for a reason! It will make you laugh and cry and fall in love with every single character. I have personally watched the entire thing at least 7 times, as a kid, teen, and adult, and it hit just as hard every single time. It's something you will feel nostalgic about, even if you've just finished it. It pretty much defined my childhood and the childhoods of everyone who watched it.
