Them showing us the genocide was brutal. It actually made me cry. Some scenes in this live action also made me cry so I see this (personally) as a success.

to answer jaby question why the earthbender sacrifice himself for the messenger is because more and more firebender are approaching and it is impossible for both of them to escape.

He put a wall between himself and the messenger to stall the soldiers and made sure the plans reached the Earth Kingdom with the other messenger. Simply put, a wall in an alley would abviously not be enough to stop the firebender soldiers from capturing both of them.

well they have to cramp like 20-30 episodes in 8 episodes. can't have each episode long as 2 hours. sacrifices has to be made. tbh that's also good for the show, for people who are curious might go watch animated series then just to get full context that are missing.

They aren't filler episodes !!! ATLA is an adventurous cartoon. Their journey is really important for the world building and character development. Just like the One piece anime. Taking it out is one of the stupidest things you can do when creating a Live action adaptations.

This kid who plays Aang was 11 when they began filming and he is now 14 he will be 15 this year. The actress who plays Kitara was 14 now she’s 17 she will be 18 this year. The actor who plays Soka was 16 when they first filmed this he is now 19 in college he will be 20 this year. You will see them age throughout the Season 1.

This episode covers the first 3 episodes of the show. Idk why people think it's weird they got to the Southern Air Temple so fast. My issue is that we didn't spend enough time there or on Appa traveling there to build the characters' relationship a bit more. I think they had too much exposition (notably Gran Gran). There was a bit too much telling and not showing.

THANK YOU, this is exactly what i was thinking, there was too much word telling than visual telling in first episode. i have never even watched animated series tbh. this is like my first exposition to this saga and i felt it was a lot melo. same with one piece, never watched one piece but they got me soo curious about luffy and pirates very early and that curiosity lead me to a great show experience.

Not that it matters anymore but the group of earth benders were actually bending rock door but the camera angles were terrible at showing that. Not 7 guys moving a stone.

i feel the same about Katara. and Iroh too. and the Grandma. and I feel like that is either an oversight of the director. also i think they couldve done 10 or 12 episodes per season and that way certain scenes that seem rushed, would have given time for more feeling i feel like the writing overall, coming from a cartoon of the early 2000s as source material, could be better. I like it's not word for word. but i think the writing is a lil lackluster. but even with alllll that, i like it a lot .

They couldn’t have 10-12 episodes because Netflix wanted 8 episodes. Any season can benefit from having more episodes to flesh out characters. Especially a show being adapted from an anime.

I don't know how many other people may have made this point yet but in defense of the casting for Katara and Sokka all of the waterbending cast is Native American. so though everyone might not have as dark as skin tone as you're expecting they still cast the characters in a way that was ethnically appropriate.

Well 1st nation/indigenous Americans was never originally black. I’m sick and tired of the racism and shaming due to people not fitting these perceived stereotypes of what an indigenous person should look like, rooted in racist ideology. I’m indigenous myself, just not to America, and I know this far too well. Even doubted by my own people tho I’m 100% and full blooded, no one can place me due to my dark tan, face tattoos etc. And people forget: 1. indigenous people don’t live the same lifestyle as their ancient or pre colonial ancestors did. Being out 24/7 and living it rough constantly looking for food to survive quite different than how most people live today. Of course they would be darker then than now. They didn’t even have sunscreen nor brightening (not whitening) products to her rid of the tan and discoloration as a tan is in fact sun damage. 2. And it’s ironic how white and black people shame people who are mixed for not looking the part when colonialism isn’t their fault. Colonial mentality in deed. They need to decolonize their colonial minds. 3. just because someone is mixed or more pale than you’d like doesn’t make them less indigenous!

What’s even more funny to me is how the Water Tribe is based on Inuit culture. Yet they made the Water Tribe like this olive dirty ashy color in the original show. People clearly don’t know what Inuit people look like. And the lady reacting to this could easily pass as one, yet people come the actors isn’t native or look native enough🫠 I know plenty of Inuit. Especially from Greenland, and they are neither dark nor brown. How Hollywood just keeps certain racist stereotypes and narratives alive…

‪As Tibetan it’s def has many ties Tibet, Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhism. I’ll just break down few points how it is Gyatso is last name of Dalai Lama. Tenzin is most common name in Tibetan which is given by Dalai Lama. Momo means dumpling/grandma in Tibetan. Apa means father in Tibetan. And how they recognize Ang as next avatar is very similar to test that were taken for current 14th Dalai Lama.‬

The original show had fire benders blasting down earth walls. The wall is just temporary cover. It’s not really a problem for them.

When they added zhangjiajie mountains as model inspiration, the homeplace of airbender, I was sold right way this will be the Avatar we all are waiting for. These were the same mountains model inspiration for Avatar part 1 by james cameroon as 'hallelujah mountains'.

I’m watching the series for the second time, so it’s awesome to watch y’all’s reaction for the first time.

My issue with this episode is that they haven't given Katara anything to do. Her first big speech to talk Ang down from the Avatar state, was given to monk Gyatso. So Ang effectively calms himself down.

To be fair, realistically speaking there was no way Aang would be able to hear Katara when he's blowing strong winds around him. So the change to Gyatso, while slightly disappointing, is an understandable one.

Even the official Avatar channel on KZread poke fun at the flaws within the world with 'realistic' outcome. Did the latter half feel a bit rushed? Maybe but they added like 25 minutes of extra scenes from the beginning of the genocide and the war. They gotta squeeze in what they can.

Adapting important scenes faithfully wouldn't be boring in the slightest. No idea why you would think that. Instead the impact of emotional scenes being removed detracts from good character development for these characters especially when they are going to squeeze so much into so little time. Wow, I've watched it already few times, and it's amazing! Fantastic live-action adaptation! I can't wait for the next season! Love the action, adventure, drama, the emotional twist, fantasy, and comedy-all in one! Amazing cinematography, amazing special effects, those animals, spirit animals just amazing, and their powers, the visuals look great and the backgrounds look fantastic! They're all amazing! Gordon is a brilliant, fantastic actor for his young age, and he is so cute; he has a million-dollar smile too. Dallas is a versatile actor, he's amazing actor. Kiawentiio and Ian are amazing too. Paul, and Daniel are very good too. All the cast members are really doing a great job. Congratulations! This is the best live-action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender so far!♥️

Most hollow and shallow excuse ever. No one in their right mind expects a 1:1 adaptation. The Lord of the Rings is the greatest trilogy of all time and it famously took many liberties with the source material. But they kept the essence, the essential. Beyond poor craftsmanship from the directors and cinematographers, this show suffered heavily from awful writing. Pure and simple. They made a few good changes, and then a myriad of poor ones that lessened character motivations, filed down flaws, restricted their arcs, and gave audiences whiplash with tonal shifts, all while barraged by heavy handed exposition and immature dialogue. It’s just not great.

​@ManSeekingMeaning perfectly stated. To add to that, while there were a lot of good worldbuilding elements, there were some that were lost for seemingly no reason. For instance: The southern water tribe in the original was small because of the Fire Nation raids, not a thriving community. This is a subtle hint early on for Aang (and the audience) that there were devastating effects to his refusal of the call. It also keeps you from questioning why Sokka was in charge. Misses on things like that just amplify how little experience the writers had in treating the world as a integral part in telling the story of the characters. My biggest pet peeve though, is being told who everyone is and how I should feel about them rather than showing them acting out their characters and letting me feel how I feel. Isn't that the first thing you fix in your storytelling, or was that just me?

It is incredibly rushed, no moment (I have only caught up on the first 4 episodes, but I don't see it changing very much) for a scene to sit and for you to feel the emotions. I wish Roku was the descendant that was supposed to mainly talk to him knowing that Roku himself was best friends with Sozin creating a connection between the two and was his past avatar. I’m trying my hardest to not expect things but just the small things like ‘you’re just a child😠 well you’re just a teenager 🤔’ I just wish Aang was a bit more oblivious because he had no idea about the war so he just wanted to have fun hiding that he was the avatar and when he was in the avatar state he never had control someone always had to talk him down trying to relate w/ him comforting him accepting Katara as his teacher saying they can learn it together! 😀

I don't think the first episode was that rushed... in fact I think it was generally perfectly paced.

I'm only watching reactions to this since I've seen this series multiple times already, and also played the games. Pretty cool that they showed the origin of why the Fire Nation started the war

I cried alot watching every single scene of avatar from the intro till the end. Brought back the nostalgia at such a level i cant even comprehend.

Watching the entire 8 episodes again lol. Loved it. Big fan of the animation and this one so far.

I did not realize this was almost an hour long it was so good I loved this first episode

I JUST watched it before seeing your reaction and I gotta say I actually got emotional during some scenes! It's a great series so far Ep.1! Love your reactions!

If you watch it with subtitles, there's a whole lot of Easter eggs from the cartoon, said nearly inaudibly, but presented on the screen. They cover things that our characters aren't doing in the live show that they did do in the cartoon, as a beautiful little tip of the hat to those of us who love the source material.

it goes fast but we have to remember that these episodes are 1 hour long and the tv show was 23 minutes. Basically, this is 3 og episodes in one.

9:05 Michaela Jill Murphy (the voice actor of Toph) has been saying the same thing throughout her recent rewatch of the series that she was doing on her KZread channel! She kept coming up with all these concepts as they’d appear in the show!

It was really good!!! Not a 1 to 1 copy and as someone who knows every scene of every episode by heart I felt that, but the writing and narative were really well done, despite the changes.

Just finished and it wasn’t boring at all. It wasn’t the best but I still very much enjoyed it. It’s great to hear your opinions because they are so similar to mine. The world was done beautifully. With the actors I have mixed feelings. Some I really enjoy some I feel like are way off. I enjoy how they made the story darker. A show for a grown up audience. Considering how long they’ve been working on it and how young the kids were. I think they did a good job.

They reach the Southern Air Temple in episode 3 of the animation. Also, there is comedy? It's just not slapstick, which would not work here at all😅.

The Actor who plays Zuko actually has a Marrial Arts background and he is executing it well and out performing all his other cast mates it’s great.

I missed the part where all the Avatar statues light up when Ang goes into avatar state, and the fire sages get alerted to his return.

So im on episode 2 they cut alot of episodes into 1 but im not complaining i realize that they have to cuz they only get so much time with each ark but they dud cut some stuff out but not bad character choices arent bad i find sokka to be close to his hilarious serious self

leading up to the show, the most worry I heard about it was the Sokka character, but I think the thing they nailed the best was him!

@@wallyfarflinger I think you could. Kids, who have gone through real trauma, often push back their experience and appear cheerful, and it's only later you realize how much it affected them. Kids have an amazing ability to live in the moment and the cartoon reflected this perfectly. The children's lightness was such a contrast to the darkness of the Fire Nation and Ozai, and I'm sad they left that out in the new show.

I think it was a good opening. I don't think the show will much the original but this was great. Seeing the the Fire Nation attack on the Air Nomads was something... Potrayal of Zuko was great. And the Aang & Gyatso hug... 🥹 Thank You for the reaction! ♥

I can totally understand that the comedy is a missing thing. But I also think that the it is good they toned that down a lot. If you think about it, the show has a REALLY dark undertone that the cartoon didn't really bring forth. And it was a kids show but as much as I would love to show others the cartoon, I also know they will be turned down by the kiddyness of it all. The stuff they pulled from this the cartoon and left out is also much filler content and just goofing around. Which worked well in the cartoon but most likely wouldn't work well here. And to be honest it would feel weird even. I watched episode 1 only atm and very surprised with it. Really looking forward to see what the full 8 episode story will be

I just finished watching the first episode of Avatar The Last Airbender on Netflix. And here are my non spoiler thoughts… First, it’s not as bad as the Shamalamadingdong version and obviously it’s not going to be as great at the original cartoon. So first the Pro’s. The cultural representation they showed for the Air Nomads and the Southern Water Tribe were phenomenal and spot on. You can see the Inuit influence for the Water Tribe. The bending is also great! It’s fast paced, and you can tell that the benders are rather skilled in their bending form. The cast is diverse, and some of the changes made are for the betterment. Prince Zuko was nearly perfect. And Uncle Iroh was charming. He is wise for his years, but doesn’t come across as a senile old man. You can see the pain and desperation he has to complete his quest. He IS after that Glory and Honor that his father took from him. Some midtakes I have; you can tell that Aang is just a boy, and Sokka had to grow up way too fast after taking responsibility for his people. However, I would have liked to see more humor from these characters. And now the cons. The biggest one I have is for the CGI… it’s bad. I mean it’s really bad. Also, you can tell that the actress portraying Katara is just not that talanted, or this is her first acting gig. Some of the dialogue is cheesy and the line delivery could be better from multiple characters (looking at you gran gran) but despite that, I’m still giving it a chance. Unlike with Shamalimbo’s take on the Last Airbender, where I couldn’t even last 5 minutes before throwing the dvd into the pits of Mordor where it belongs, I am more than willing to give the Netflix show a chance. It’s on “thin ice” right now, but, I will be going on to watch the second episode.

i felt the same way about a slight element of goofiness and comedy being missing. the great thing about the cartoon is that the seriousness of the situation constantly builds.

The show puts a lot of pressure on young actors to carry the weight of the story, and for the most part they do deliver pretty well. Sokka and Zuko, for example, are really good at physical acting and letting their body language and facial expressions tell a story. Aang is generally pretty good and does a great job with the emotional beats of his journey, but I do agree that he sometimes feels slightly over-coached and it comes across a bit high-school theater production occasionally. Katara, unfortunately, is pretty stiff at this early stage, though she does improve as the first season goes on and does have some really good moments later. It comes across in a lot of ways like the first couple of Harry Potter movies, where it feels like some of the children are consciously acting rather than simply being the characters. This is a common problem with young actors, and it’s rare to find a cast that can pull it off consistently. It doesn’t help that the director often has them acting almost directly to the camera, especially during dialogue scenes, but again I think that’s something that will improve as the actors themselves mature and become more comfortable with their roles and this will allow cinematography to become more of a factor in the storytelling.

I already finished the whole series... Overall on its own merit....this series did a good job translating it, though it does feel a little bit rushed. I like the pacing better with what they did in one piece. But I can say one thing....i like the second half of the season better than the first half

I mostly agree with you. But we can't really expect certain elements to be the same as the cartoon. Specially in the case of humour, the tone, the quirky sound effects and the drastic expressions of the cartoons made the scenes even funnier. We can't really expect the actors to overdo it like the cartoon. It's more subtle and that works imo for a live action series. If it were exactly the same why would we not rewatch the cartoon itself. So far so good. Although I do agree about katara. She could use a little animation in her expressions, she looks too subtle till now.

Key Moments that just make no sense. Two examples. 1. First Time Katara gets calles "Master Katara: In the Original its when he first gets his Earthbending Master Toph. He calle her Sifu, but not Katara.... later he does.... you know what i mean. Its a development and its great. In the Live action some unknown guy calls her Master the first time? how lame was this. Plus, Why is it Master and not Sifu? 2. One of the best moment ever in the original ... when zuko starts to question his way, iroh tells him when someone is at its lowest, he is in the best position to change. This was my alltime favourite line in the series. Now this Line was between Katara and Aang. It had little meaning. and got lost.

Episode 1 was alright (Loved loved loved the opening scene of the show), episode 2 was better. It was less...choppy? I found episode one kind of hard to get through while episode 2 was smooth like butter. I had zero complaints about episode 2. Not sure what went wrong but the first episode wasn't as smoothe. Here is my critique of the first episode (warning spoiler): Again, spoiler. 1.) Opening, perfect. 10/10. Really well done. Very very well done. hats off to the actors, camera, crew, editing, etc. Best opening i've seen, even better than One piece's. 2.) The exposition/talking part about the avatar wasn't bad, but as I was watching it I realized something...off. I would have made the script slightlyyyy shorter. Like, the opening scene/animation part was fine. Animation, no problem. keep that. It was beautiful. However, I would have ended the script/talking part at "the next person who could stand in his way..." THEN I would have put the credit opening scene of "Avatar the last air bender... Aang" (This was the main issue for this part, I think. The talking part was just slightly too long. Anything after the phrase "the next person who could stand in his way..." saying wise, was unneeded. animation was fine till the end, just the script was off.) 3.) The air temple backstory was good (I loved aang's opening) but the ending with the air temple war wasn't enough. I would have added an extra last minute scene after gyatso, just a bitttt extra, of the whole temple and flames, not ending with gyasto (aang's storm part was, fine, i'm talking about the air bending battle). We needed more showing of the air temple going down/flames. 4.) Not too important but I would have added "100 years later" in writing, at the flash part. (before katara's opening scene) Note: Why? I was confused about the timeline, where we were in the story, (past? present?) until I saw katara. Once I saw her, I knew 100 years passed. (I feel new fans will be confused) 5.) Sokka's opening would have been better if he was standing on a small tower looking out a window into the open tundra (he is guarding the town). (This would be a symbolic/parallel with aang and his opening scene of him looking down from up high. Symbolism. Metaphor.) Sokka would then turn around and boss the kids standing there behind him, guarding the small fort with him , he would then explain his dad left him in charge as the southern water tribe's war protector. And then he would go down to the ground, and boss more kids and talk to katara, like he did in the first episode scene. (watching the show I was confused about sokka's job/role... Was he a general/protector? The chief of the town/mayor of the town? Or just a kid taking over his dad's job?) 6.) This is a big one for me... Aang didn't float...why didn't he float? Why? He just stood there, glowing. I would have made him float just a coupleeee of inches off the ground in his iceberg scene , just a littleeee, then have him slide down the snow slope unconscious. This would have given a more ethereal and shocking effect. 7.) "Let's go save the weird kid." change to "Let's go save your weird friend." would have made that line better for that part and would have insinuated a Sokka to Katara and Katara to Aang relationship. (Like a silent, "I'm your brother, I care about you, and since you care about the weird kid, and I care about you, let's go!") (If there was a extra part of the show's budget I would also add more depth to katara and aang becoming really great friends. Just more emotion connection? more...detail? I needed more... something...interaction? Edit: Episode 2 did a great job of this when aang and katara talked and then had a playful water fight. Really great showing/example.) 8.) Not a huge deal, but I wish zuko had been slightlyyyy angrier during the escape part in the first episode. It was fine though. (not a huge deal overall) Edit: He got better in the second episode. Everybody did. Well done! :) 9.) I loved loved loved (10/10) Aang's new reason for stopping his avatar powers. Made MUCH more sense story wise, overall, than the original. Note: Episode 2 is definitely better than the first. I have zero complaints about it. It was very smooth, pacing was much better than the first episode. Everyone did great. Very well done.

I can’t wait to watch I read so many bad thoughts of the series also I did read good thing but still, so I will watch it I feel that I am going to like it as long as it’s better than that awful movie that I don’t want to remember because I can tell that the original will always be better and I have rewatched it so many time so it will be a good experience for me to watch the live actions as it’s own version.

I admit it was intense the way they came at aang but you have to think of all the people who were lost who got killed and just hurt by the war Id be pissed too

best first 20mins of a live action hands down. monk gyatso the goat

Its good as a stand alone...but tbh..i dont like the changes they made. They got rid of Sokkas character development by removing his sexism. It was what made him Sokka and come to realize that ge was wrong and that women can be strong warriors. In MY opinion..theyve changed too much.

Its an adaptation of the story not a copy. Its not that hard to understand

Fire nation was the most aggressive and strong among others. They were militaristic and had the drive to conquer. The way they burned people to crisp showing the power for destruction. They didnt hold back when it comes to genocide. They showed the destruction of an entire race.

I chose not watch the animated version to enjoy the new live action version without any disappointment that naturally comes from comparing the 2 products. But still, I found the live action pretty rushed in its relationship building and worldbuilding. Its commendable nonetheless as far as the scale of the live action is concerned. The VFX/CGI is crisp and sharp but I feel it lacks impact. Certain scenes don't land well and pacing is a recurring issue. Having said that, its not bad by any stretch of imagination, still enjoyable though, the first 4 episodes that I've seen. Will finish watching the remaining 4 by this weekend. Hoping that it wraps up well.

More serious tone on this. Little bit underwelming. But enjoyable so far (ep1).

ll be totally honest. I've been an Avatar fan since years so I was really VERY VERY hyped for this. And i will definitely say that they did the CGI of the bending really good and showing us some extra moments between Gyatso and Aang was great and also showing the hardcore nature of Kyoshi... BUT ... BUT ... BUT they did mess up with LOTS of the small important details which made ATLA what it was! I'm totally fine with skipping of moments and stuffs in Live Adaptation. But changing personalities of characters and the "core motivation" for their arcs? If you even change that then how will it be a good storytelling. So there will be no carefree Aang (who actually acted as a kid too instead of just getting into sadness and then followed by "I'll have to do what the Monks said, let's do it". Its not even like the goofy comedy is less, its just NOT THERE at all. They just have situational comedy. Like even if i dont talk about other episodes, but even in starting episodes, they showed Zuko's motivation well but where is the confrontation between Aang and Zuko? Aang not discovering what fire nation did to Air Nomads AFTER he went to the Southern Air Temple and see Gyatso's remains... why Gran Gran had to reveal entire plot to him lol. Don't get me wrong. The episodes are indeed somewhat fun to watch and the music, CGI, and even some of the story retelling is pretty fun to see moreover I LOVED the performances done by Sokka and Zuko's actors but y'all get my points. And just like Jaby said, if you remove the love they put into the animation or "looking like an epic show", then is this a perfect story retelling?

@@Roverde Ofcourse, that's totally understandable but its not as if I'm hating on the show entirely or anything. You'd see that if u go through my entire review. I was also very happy with the "extra" parts they brought into the adaptation and those felt really good to watch too as a OG fan who first watched ATLA years ago and then rewatched many times in later years. They did do lots of things perfectly but as audience we also can give out our opinions if we didn't like any aspect very much. Finally, this is just my take after watching the first 5 episodes. I'll still watch the remaining episodes too and its also understandable and great if others like the show for what it is.

Don't expect this to be too much like the animated show

ye, why even bother making novels, books, comics, animations, into movies or shows. just let it be right? for example, why bother making a movie out of Stephen Kings 1982 novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. We don't need the movie Shawshank Redemption.@@vankraemer2979
