The thicker board may be to help with heat dissipation from the lack of get spreader on that chip. Which may explain why Caddx said not to remove it from the older version. Lack of mounting holes shouldn't be an issue, many whoop cameras don't have side holes!

  • @CDRaff

I bet it's thicker because the ground plane is thicker, which like you said, would make it move heat away from the chip faster.

We can't do a two layer board in the rocket race. The props overlap the aio/fc. Two layers means the props will hit the second layer. there is potential to try to lower it, but it could be so close and risky.

I think the thickness may also have to do with better heat dissipation? The vtx otherwise might start thermal throttling and you'd see latency increases, jitter etc... Would love to see someone do a latency test of this system alongside the temperature.. especially when just hovering/slow cruising in not so good airflow frames..

@RP not true, the chips on the flight controller have the actual silicon encased for the very reason of protecting the silicon. The main chip on the VTX has the silicon die exposed. This die is much more fragile. Its why computer processors have a heat spreader on them. Back in the day they didnt and it was common to break the corners when installing the cooler which could kill it.

I plan to try it with my moblite6 first thats coming in at 24g with the old 1s camera and analog Diamond board. The weight savings may look impressive on paper, but in the end, the functional weight of adding a camera mount that walksnail didn’t include in this lite version would contradict the weight savings it was going for. The burden of mounting the camera properly is now also up to the end user (which can potentially add bulk, weight, and hassle). Plus, you’re stuck with a plastic camera housing, no metal heat sink, and worse antenna. The only upside to this version of avatar mini is for those hardcore weight savers chasing those grams, and the physical size. Other than that, the regular 1s mini is functionally best overall. Wish walksnail can eventually reintroduce the metal heatsink to the new board.

Its possible depending what we use to mount could add weight. The mount from the runcam I showed in the video is .2grams, we add the 4 screws to bring it up to .32 grams. I also found another random mount that holds the lens and thus doesn't requiring screws to mount to the camera which weights .28 grams then we add the canopy mounting screws to bring that one to .31 grams. I don't see the antenna as an issue, the antennas I have had with both versions of the 1s vtx are nearly the same construction with slight weight differences. I do agree they needed to add a mount of their own rather than builders having to dig through excess parts to find something that will work.

  • @WATCHMAKUH

I hope walksnail can include that runcam mount you found as well as supporting hardware in the kit. Not everyone will have that mount especially for those starting a build using the lite kit. It seems like a nice option with minimal weight too! Plus, they can still claim the low weight on just the unit since the mount is an “accessory” lol. Great review and love seeing your vids! Law enforcement doesn't enforce them to the letter of the law and its fairly excepted we won't get stopped if we are close to the speed limit even if we are slightly over the limit.

So apparently the old 1s vtx has a v1 and a v2. And then there’s this new LITE 1s vtx. So in total, 3 different 1s vtx’s. A V1, a V2, and a Lite. I think the VRX combo with 1s vtx was for a V1 vtx. And now they have updated it to ship with a V2. I had a friend ask if the pre orders for the vrx+1s vtx combo would come with the Lite vtx. It seems like their response is that it would come with the updated V2, not the Lite. In reference to the lite vtx, my friend told me “I think I talked them into a new combo”. Sure enough, soon after, they added a “Lite” combo option to the preorders in addition to the old 1s vtx option. So now there is a “1s kit” and a “1s Lite Kit” that can be selected as your combo option for the VRX. I put in a preorder the first day the VRX combos were available. My preorder was for the combo with the “1s kit”. Given that they haven’t replaced the “1s kit” with the “1s lite kit” option, and that they told my friend the original preorders preorders would NOT have the lite vtx, unfortunately, I think us early buyers are getting the heavier vtx. Time will tell though. Just gotta get my shipment in. Either way, I went and bought just the 1s lite kit as a standalone, JUST IN CASE lol. Here’s to hoping I’ve got 2 on the way rather than a lite and a heavy. The fact they told you they will ship with the lite vtx gives me a dash of hope but I’m not banking on it :/

I just wrote this to someone earlier with the same question: I am the person that de-lids all of my processors… it is a high risk operation, but I have never screwed one up in the 20+ that I have done. Take a thin razor and cut the silicone bead that glues the heat spreader, carefully as you can easily knock off a component, and do not cut deep, at all, as you can damage components under the spreader… but with a steady hand and patience, you’ll do fine. Also don’t cut yourself on the razor… I use double edged shaving razors and you can really mess yourself up if you are not careful. The thinner the blade the better. You’ll know when all the silicone is cut, as you will feel it, and be able to rotate the heat spreader. Don’t rotate more than 3degrees, you don’t want to damage anything underneath. Slowly and gently rotate a small amount, back and fourth to loosen up the thermal compound underneath in the centre and put a SMALL amount of upwards prying pressure on one of the corners, and in 1-5 seconds it should come off. If it doesn’t… release the pressure and try on the next corner beside it, just not the opposite one. And it should come up, if not, just keep going around 90 degrees at a time. It should come up pretty easily honestly. And may even come up before you even finish cutting the silicone bead. Carefully cut off the remaining silicone on the chipset mount and clean off the thermal compound with some 99% alcohol. Obviously I’m not responsible for anything you do, but it’s honestly not difficult for me.
