Avatar Korra is the MOST RESILIENT Avatar

Ойын-сауық

Korra went through A LOT as the Avatar in an incredibly short period of time, and managed to save the world multiple times over through immense trauma. I believe she's the most resilient Avatar we've ever seen.
Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra make up my favorite franchise of all time. Oddly enough, I haven't talked about it all that much here on my channel. WELL that's about to change, I'm in the Avatar State and going hard to bring you tons of Avatar and Korra content. This is the first of many, expect breakdowns on Avatars Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk and Wan coming soon, in addition to tons of other ATLA and LoK videos.

I always found Korra rather similar to Luke Skywalker (and no, not just because they wore green tank tops in a swamp while training under an enlightened veteran). They both started off as cocky, naive and impulsive characters who wanted heroic thrills but came to understand the true meaning behind their destinies through hardships, losses and pain and end up being spiritually enlightened, wise and level-headed. I know the writers mostly based her on Gautama Buddha, but still. It's an interesting comparison.

Wow I really love this comparison, thanks for sharing. I've always thought about how Korra and Rey both had massive uphill battles to climb with the fans because of the burden of comparison. They both represent new types of characters and stories, but people have to compare them to those that came before as a measuring stick, and use those comparisons against them.

These are all such incredibly valid points, I’ve always loved LOK even after growing up with ATLA, and never could understand why the show got such incredible hate for Korra’s character. She goes through so much as just a teenager and then has to struggle to overcome all of it. I also saw that movement to the cliff as her contemplating suicide in order to be capable of keeping balance in the world. Which is incredibly heavy to have on your shoulders, Korra’s situations were incredibly unique and I believe she handled it all as well as she could. I recently just started rewatching the series after finishing rewatching ATLA for the 5th time and I still think Korra is absolutely amazing.

Arguably, she’s the strongest avatar with her biggest feat being in season 4 as a 21yr old woman she was able to split a big ass beam of pure spirit energy with just one move Sure any avatar can spirit bend but none has shown such prowess and just raw power in spirit bending before, not to mention (though many don’t like it) she can create a giant, spirit-like, well… avatar. Also while in that form is able to shoot out OP beams and easily towers over many skyscrapers lol. Imo the strongest avatar besides Korra would be Kyoshi, now that lady was something else 😂 PS: obviously many won’t agree with me and that’s cool just try not to hate too much lmao

Actually korra was pretty strong. There are things in each season she does that indicate it. 1. Being able to handle amon's bloodbending, he was stronger than katara, didn't need full moon. 2. She connected to cosmic power without avatar spirit inside her. Created blue giant to fight dark avatar. Without raava. And defeated him. 3. She faught most dangerous assassin of the world while fighting the poison that was enough to kill her. 4. Stopping the mecha with freezing giant water wave without Avatar state. Energy bending the beam like you said, it had unlimited power source. It was nuke scale explosion that created another portal. All those things paint her pretty stronger than past avatars. But then again kyoshi fucking created her own island.

This is the most open minded, perfectly presented, logical, and interesting video on Korra’s character. You actually UNDERSTOOD her character the way she was. You delved deep to what makes her Korra and how powerful she was. What’s even better, is how you did it without trying to dull her down and bringing Aang up. I’ve seen way too many videos just nitpicking and finding reasons to hate Korra without actually understanding her character. Just because she wasn’t like Aang, does NOT mean she was a terrible character or a bad avatar. So many of these Atla fans completely invalidate her experiences and make her out to be such a weak avatar. She’s stronger than most of then actually realize. She went through so much and came back from it. Korra did things we felt were right and learned from her mistakes. People hold such high expectations for her because of Aang. She may be the avatar and his reincarnation. But she is NOT Aang. She’s Korra. People need to stop expecting her to live up to him. Her goal isn’t to live up to Aang or do him justice. Her goal as the avatar is to maintain balance in the world. She doesn’t have to do it the same way Aang did or make the same choices he did. And after losing her connection to her past lives, she was really on her own. I love how different she is from Aang. Korra is still her own person. People hating on Korra for the simplest reasons. If it was Aang, I bet my soul he would not receive the same backlash she got. I’m honestly shocked Korra was able to come back from it all. If that was me, I would have been BROKEN beyond repair. Korra is definitely a strong avatar and has achieved so many things within a few years. She is most definitely my favorite avatar. This is the only video I’ve seen on Korra that isn’t being so nit-picky, completely ignoring the positives, and not understanding her character and her position as the avatar. People wanting the series to be like Atla never understood how unique she is.

I agree with this I just think she didn't have the best personality. Especially in the first season, she was so selfish and rude to everyone who didn't agree with her wish made it hard to like her. We should look to the writers who keep writing these "strong independent women" to be selfish and whiny. I want a strong female character that acts like an actual person would act, and isn't a jerk to people. You can be strong and not blame your shortcomings on other people and destroys thousand year old relics because *you* failed to follow instructions that are very clear. She's very strong, yes, but not the best person. also sidenote: really sad that in LOK they kinda ignored the art of bending. It was mainly punches and quick kicks. I mean, Korra's first airbending move was a punch, which didn't fit at all into the way airbending was performed.

•• I see what you’re saying and I agree with you. The whole reason they did that was because they wanted her to be the complete opposite of Aang. Korra’s personality isn’t really for everyone but it’s understandable why people don’t like her as a person. I’ve personally never had an issue with it. She’s human, she fucks up. She was supposed to be a flawed character so she can have room to grow. She was in the South Pole for so long and never really got to see the world and travel. Not to mention, she didn’t have those kinds of likable human traits that is expected of someone.

Combat Medic yes, she messes up, as does aang but what annoys me is that she seems to leave the situation with the least amount of consequences, or seems to think that it’s not her fault when it is. Also, if she started off bratty and there was like a big change and she matured a lot more I wouldn’t have this problem but she didn’t really change that much. She barely changed and they used the PTSD plot device to cover the fact that Korra as a person did not really grow. She was making the same mistakes she made since day one.

  • @CaptainPikeachu

Korra's resilience is honestly the reason why I absolutely love her as my favorite character. She gets knocked down yes, but she keeps getting back up, and that is not so easy to do. It would have been so easy for Korra to just give up, it would have been so easy for Korra to make excuses for herself and just do nothing and wallow in grief and trauma. But she took all that trauma, worked through it, and turned it into strength to help save and change the world. I genuinely don't understand how anyone can hate her.

It's a different one than Aang and that's perfectly fine. they're different people, living in different times, raised in different ways, they aren't going to be the same. They're both the Avatar but that doesn't mean its the same person in a different body, each Avatar is their own person with their own nature and their own strengths and weaknesses. LOK is my favourite of the two shows. I like ATLA a lot but I find Korra more interesting as a character and enjoyed seeing her on her journey more. I also preferred the format of having more villains. I didn't find Ozai particularly compelling. I preferred the diversity of villains we got from Korra far more and the fact it wasn't just about the big bad fire nation. With Korra they all had different agendas and as a consequence different lessons for Korra to eventually learn from them all. Have you read the Kyoshi novel? I really enjoyed that especially as it had a darker tone. Being a young adult book really allowed them to delve into how deadly bending can be. I also like the cast of characters that surrounded Kyoshi. We also get a bit of info about Yangchen and a good amount about Kuruk as well which I appreciated it helped us situate Kyoshi in her world and what was going on a bit better. I hope they do more novels in the future because I'd say I think its my favourite thing out of the avatar universe even more so than the two animated shows. The way we were able to delve into things in a different way than the show was great and the novel format allowed for more deep story telling than the graphic novels do. I'm excited for the Shadow of Kyoshi in a couple of weeks.

@@Johnny2Cellos I really hope they do more novels and explore some other avatars. I'd be down for something in depth on Yangchen especially as she seems to respected in Kyoshi's time. The impact of her success as a avatar also impacts on Kuruk too and the fact he seems to have less threats to deal with because of it which along with his nature seems to have lead to some complacency setting in, which then has its own substantial knock on into Kyoshi's time line. Maybe a novel on the 2nd avatar and how that all went down, maybe he or she wasn't believed to be the Avatar initially (Wan didn't seem to know it was going to happen when he died so I assume no one else knew aside from Raava) and then they discover the rebirth. I'd love a Kyoshi show. But I'd also really love an anthology show where they have episodes dedicated to separate Avatars all through the Avatar cycles.

On an unrelated note, I love that throughout Korra, we see many highly dangerous and trained combatants who know how to deal with most benders get continually surprised by airbending: Amon and his Chi Blockers are both unprepared for Tenzin, while Unalaq is surprised by Korra's airbending while being able to manage her and Mako's firebending with relative ease, the White Lotus and Dai Li are like wise beaten handily by new airbenders.

THANK YOU so much for this video! I'm so sick and tired of people hating on Korra just because she is not Aang ... well D'UH! -.- I love ATLA and it's one of the best animated series ever made, but I prefer Korra as a character over Aang tbh. I relate to her so much & I also adored the shows' darker and in a sense more "realistic" themes of PTSD and the fear of not being needed/wanted (ofc ATLA tackled a lot of dark themes too, but more people suffer from depression/anxiety/PTSD than from being brainwashed by a secret agency, aka Korras themes feel more relatable in general ^^'). Also one thing that people often forget is the baseline difference of plot-movement: ATLA was driven by the overarching plot of the 100 year war & having to defeat Ozai, while TLOK was driven by different characters and their decisions - no overarching plot to shape our characters, but rather other characters, their decisions and the immediate aftermath of those decisions + their influence on Korras character again) Anyway, I'll subscribe to you now because both your Bojack Horseman AND your Avatar content is top notch so I need to binge every single video you ever made haha :D

And I know She can be hotheaded but she has more sense of action, where as Aang was more reactionary. And I understand this is due to differences like Korra being older and semi Experience with the elements and Aang being the tempered monk, and our introduction into this world. But what I loved about LOK is that it never felt dull, the characters (imo) moved the plot along not the reverse.

They always resonate with me, like she freaking chooses to die and possibly risk ending the avatar lineage to save the new air nation, trying to preserve Aang's deepest wish for the future. They draw a direct parallel during Jinoras tattoo ceremony, when she looks just like Aang, and it's his culture has been preserved in spite of the horror of genocide. C'mon that was so beautiful

Johnny, I just want to say, thank you so much for this video. I was assigned a creative essay on a piece of culture that means something to us for a writing class, and for me it was Korra. As a first generation child of immigrants, I know what it's like to have such a giant destiny put on your shoulders -- to the point where you don't know who you are without it. I identified so much with Korra's insecurities feeling either like a failure to a legacy or an imposter to your own self. Even in the years I hated myself the most and felt like such a failure, I loved Korra, and it took me eight years to realize that that part of me that loves her is the part of me that is secretly rooting for myself. This video made my day and reminded me that I'm both resilient and fragile and worthy of love, just like Korra, Avatar or not.

Korra’s PTSD is an anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events. She struggled to recover, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and being haunted by flashbacks to her encounter. Although she recovered physically, her emotional struggle led her to embark on a journey to reconnect with her Avatar Spirit while hiding her identity as the Avatar, going against her tendency of being prideful about it. Even though, which the various traumas from earlier seasons have done just that, imprinting themselves on her mind, brain, and body. She has experienced something incredibly traumatic, and she cannot seem to get over it. Korra has been called a “hero” for her representation of mental trauma. While she has made mistakes, she always uses her powers for what she believes are good and just reason. Notably, Korra is a portrayal of an Indigenous-coded woman who has to deal with her PTSD in order to continue her duty as Avatar, master of the elements. During “Balance,” we see how the various traumas from earlier seasons have done just that, imprinting themselves on Korra’s mind, brain, and body. Flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety are all common symptoms of PTSD, and this holds true for Korra throughout the season. In “Korra Alone,” the second episode of the season, we see how far Korra has spiraled and how distant she has become. She’s unable to sleep in the weeks following her fight with Zaheer, waking from nightmares. Korra has barely kept in contact with her friends and hasn’t been able to resume her role as Avatar, protector of the world. She’s stuck in survival mode, constantly reliving her fight with Zaheer. Heart pounding, hair plastered to her face with sweat, terror takes hold: We watch as she wakes from a nightmare or a flashback interrupts her sparring. She’s stalked by a shadow Korra carrying the chains from when she was poisoned. Although her condition isn’t “cured,” she’s able to manage her symptoms and continue the fight, carrying out her role as Avatar. Korra is not the same, but she isn’t any lesser because of what she’s faced. Her loved ones give her space to deal with her complicated trauma, recognizing and honoring who she has become. Her trauma isn’t the butt of a joke or a stereotypical portrayal of arrogant genius. She’s still Korra, and she’ll always be healing.

I gave up after the first 2 episodes of Book 2, because Korra's headstrong refusal to listen to her friends' and family's warnings set Unalaaq's destructive plan in action. She made me so mad I quit watching. Since watching ATLA, I went back and watched all of LOK, and I'm so glad I did. I loved Korra and her incredible journey. I felt devastated for her when she lost her connection to her past lives...it was the one thing I wish they'd been able to fix in the series. You should check out the graphic novels, they're pretty good! But I can confirm she does NOT reconnect with her past lives yet. SOrry :(

I've always loved the Legend of Korra, and I love your explanation of what makes her such a compelling character! I have never thought about the in-universe reaction to Korra as a meta-analysis of how the fandom reacts to her, but it makes a lot of sense. I wish more people would give Korra a fair chance because it's such a great show!

The prospect of you saying Korra was at the cliff to possibly end her life hit hard. I watched season one with my mom, someone who was battling depression and suicidal thought and she was the one who pointed out that was probably going to jump. That was so painful to think about and for once, Korra getting her bending back was sort of a relief in a way. Perhaps if Avatar was allowed to delve into deeper topics and LOK didn't go through as much production woes from it's executive team at Nickelodeon, then maybe that one scene would have been so rawly heartbreaking. even so, thank you for noticing as well.

Too many times I think people dismiss LoK for its flaws without really looking at the really interesting aspects of its story and characters. This was a really good video, you made a really good point with the cliff scene. Never thought of it that way but dang, definitely a real possibility. Can't wait to rewatch LoK with fresh eyes. People also seem to forget that Korra is a sheltered teenager, teenagers are very much children and not at all adults. She's impulsive, hotheaded and ignorant, like any normal teen. Compared to Aang she's much older but still very much a child.

To he honest, Aang's series was great for the world building, showing how the nations function and what war can do to the world. The series was amazing, especially when you grew up with it. Korras Series however was buildet around her. There was not as much world building left to do, except for the new technology, which got handeled through Korra being also new to it all. Aang was great, Korra was great, you cannot compare them, like you said. It is almost rude to compare each Avatar with the other one. I do not get the point across as well as I want bc my english is not as great today, but I still hope you understand :')

Avatar Korra is a truly resilient, determined and sacrificial character. She always tried to find ways to save the world, even when the personal cost was steep, such as giving herself up to the Red Lotus in exchange for the safety of the Air Nation. I truly believe that when she was standing atop the cliff at the end of Book 1, she was contemplating suicide, the creators, imo alluded to this by the fallen teardrop. In doing so, she would die, but the world would have a new Avatar, one who could bend all 4 elements. Sure, she was cocky and arrogant in Book 1, but as time progressed, Korra changed and matured. What we saw in Book 4 is an entirely new and improved adult Korra. This is essentially what good writing is. A character is well-written not because they are likeable, but because they are relatable and show progress with time and development, and I think Bryke did a great job with Korra.

About the whole thing of turning herself over to the red lotus. I think we kinda missed out on a pretty big opportunity there. Because what if Korra had found out much sooner about Zaheer’s plan to end the avatar cycle. It would give Korra a very interesting moral conundrum to ponder on. What’s more important? The new fledgling air nation, or the continued preservation of the avatar as a whole? That’s a difficult question I’m not really sure on myself to be honest.

Every time someone says that Korra is a MARY SUE, they should see this video.....Korra is probably the most vulnerable Avatar of all and probably the one who indeed suffer the most trying to do the job she was suppose to do, thats why I love her so much, she never back down and push forward, despite, the world seems to not wanted her or the Avatar anymore, she was resilient and always step forward no matter how many....MANY....MAAAANNNNYY times she got, beat up, torture or traumatized, so again to all Korra haters..........HOW SHE IS A MARY SUE???

Yeah I agree, she wasn't a mary sue at all, she was useless. I feel like people don't know what a Mary Sue is anymore. A Mary sue wouldn't destroy the avatar state forever, she would probably save it then somehow make it even more powerful than it ever was. I feel like the writers were just into her getting hurt, like she had a great character design but idk just with how much she got defeated or tortured seemed like it was for pleasure. Even in her relationships she was getting her heart broken left and right, honestly I can't say one true friend Korra really had. I don't count Misami because...it just came out of nowhere near the end. Just the entire crew felt like a acquaintances rather than friends to her. Tenzen was trying to be there for her though, I can say that. And I feel like she never really had character development either. Unless you count her being in a wheel chair with her hair cut and she being miserable a thing. Something was just off with the writing in this show.

@@slushdog1012 She did bro, hell even Tenzin, Aangs son acknowledges this. Saving bending from being wiped away from the world, getting independence for the Southern Water tribe, reuniting spirits and humans despite 10,000 years of separation, bringing about 10,000 years of light, reviving the Air Nation, saving the Earth Kingdom from a ruthless dictatorship, and creating a new spirit. Hell the first 5 were done in 1 single year, and the last were done 3 years later.
