Honestly insane. She Mary Sue though cuz she learned 3 of the elements off the bat. But people always forget she didn’t master them until she trained for 13 years. Honestly Aang took one year, you gotta call him a Mary Sue first before Korra.

TerraKage that doesn’t mean she is a Mary Sue. She might have picked up the three elements but she had to learn and master them. She even had to loose everything to gain the ability to bend the fourth. A Mary sue has no obstacles whatsoever but korra went through too much. The only difference is she bounced back too fast the first two times but the third messed her up. Korra was never and never will be a Mary Sue. Most people use that term for her without knowing the meaning. A Mary Sue doesn’t struggle. Korra did. That’s like calling Aang a Gary Stu because he had fully mastered air bending when the series started, picked up water and fire bending so easily and even though he struggled he picked up earth in one episode meanwhile it took korra 12 to make a puff of wind.

I think both Avatars show someone who is the opposite of what the world wanted. Aang's world wanted an avatar who could stop the fire nation and restore peace, but Aang was (at first) pacifist, even a bit naive and scared Korra's world was moving on from the spirits, and wanted to also leave behind the avatar. They wanted a peacekeeper, a diplomat, and nothing more than a figurehead, yet they got Korra Still, both overcame their internal struggles and external obstacles to serve the world. And most importantly of all (in my opinion) they didn't do it alone

I've seen other discussions that bring this up. Lots of people have noted each Avatar's personality/character is the opposite of the what the world they were born into needed i.e. Roku was a forgiving/compassionate friend but his world needed a person who'd strike Sozin down (b/c sozin was never going to stop by choice), Aang was a pacifist when the world needed a warrior, and Korra is a warrior when the world needed a diplomat. Basically each Avatar has to go through a personal level of growth to become what their world currently needs. Like Sage's Rain said in the video: "The world may not always want an Avatar, but the world always needs an Avatar."

In terms of actual tragedy, aang is the most. He had to face the fact that he was the LAST airbender. All of his gurus and friend and dear monk gyatso was gone. It is beautifully described in the episode where aang is unlocking his chakras. The show takes the time to show he is improving and even guides the viewer in how to get throguth the various dark events aang went through. Aang show was on a different level for a kids show and shows how true growth is made. Team avatar was an actual symbolism of unique cultures colliding with katara and Sokka water tribe clothing and toph and zuko with their clothing. The last airbender was literaly a melting pot of the characters struggles and obstacles, someone legend of korra lacks Korra is more like a avatar that struggles with fitting in the new world. Things like depression and ptsd is mentioned but never expanded upon like Last airbender did. Korra was poisned and went through a lot of trouble, but it wasnt really as impactful and moving with what aang went throughwhenevr aang went into the avatar state, you can feel the emotion he is going through. You don’t get the same reaction from korra. Aang and korra are great avatars but aang literaly portrayed a whole lot more than korra did. Also Korra was just given everything like mastering the avatar state and energy bending whereas aang had to work day and night to get those abilities. Roku didn’t just grant him the ability to master the avatar state . All he did was give advice and aang took care of the rest Korra was given everything but aang did it all on his own.

Than despite not doing that he is still able to go into the avatar state depsite being told he would not be able to do it again. Once again, aangs issues despite litteraly it being the equivalent of walking in and seeing your family lying in a pool of blood is giving next to no attention. If you have to say look at one episode for that much trauma, than his promblems are easily skimped over. The fact that he is able to recover and get over that so quickly in a show that doesn't even span a course of year is laughably bad writing. And I love aang but the reason the show is great isn't because aang has amazing character development and growth. More quite the opposite. Its similar to goku in dbz as both are flat characters. Both start out as amazing characters and therefore everyone loves them where as the depth in the show comes from how they in particular influence the other characters and world around them. Where as koras story is about her and how the world influences and changes her.

I think there’s a little bit more to Aang’s story than that. His story is ultimately about accepting responsibility without letting it override who he fundamentally is as a person. That’s one of the reasons why he was against such things as using the avatar state and taking a life. Aang has the captain America arc where his whole thing is to remain the good person he is, and staying true to himself, which led to the payoff of him using energybending which requires to have an unbendable spirit. People say that Korra’s arc is about her becoming her own person outside of being the avatar, but what kind of person? I guess one who’s more compassionate to her enemies as we saw when she confronted Kuvira? But that technically didn’t save the day since Korra successfully talking Kuvira down only happened after the fighting was over where she herself did a lot of fighting in typical avatar fashion.

I would greatly disagree. The show tries to give you the feeling of growth and change but it sidesteps or avoids the problems and consequences the story creates. Then it has the audacity to make you think that something has changed but it hasn’t. Look, I’m not a fan of the show but that’s because I see it’s flaws and see what it could have been. I see the potential such an amazing world has. So it’s frustrating every time I see someone say it was a good show because it wasn’t. Or even Korra herself, she was a poorly written, potential fascinating character that was completely underwhelming

@@ducky36F They literally wasted several character growth moments that would have elevated the show greatly but more importantly would give us further insight into what kind of people they were. Korra specifically doesn't change when she's supposed to. She changes when the plot needs her to. She leaves a lot of problems that are at the core of her being unresolved. Then acts like they have been resolved all of a sudden. The creators spent a lot of time creating Korra. There is no doubt about that. However, I can practice basketball 24/7 but someone that is 5'7 that can't tell distances because of deteriorating eyesight is never going to play in the NBA because those things make me bad. It's the same idea. She has too many flaws that don't fit in that world that was written for her to interact with. And normally someone like her who would be out of place in that world would be fascinating. We don't get to experience that. So I suppose it would be more correct to say the things that happen and how she processes situations as well as deals with problems are what make her poorly written but the point is still valid.

That's what I feel as well. The Last Airbender was an epic 3 seasons that left an impression on many. To follow up to that was an insurmountable feat. But to watch Korra with the impression of ATLA fresh in the mind is a foolish position. The show clearly recalls ATLA, but makes it clear this is a new era, and a new story. Unique to itself. I could agree to harp on some of the technical aspects such as the Avatar giants. But it's a pointless debate. Because in the end the show hit the important points. As Sage's Rain lays out in front of us. Korra's journey is all internal, which takes a substantial level of nuance to display through visual medium. Aang's journey was mostly physical. Which led to spectacle and an easily accessible connection between Aang's journey as the hero and his place in the world. Meaning his struggles partly stemmed from learning the elements. As for Korra her struggle was internal. And so the journey of her as the hero is not as accessible to the viewer because even the best of us face difficulty in identifying our internal struggle with a visual manifestation. As with all art, everyone is subject to their personal opinion. However when we get down to brass tax. Korra was an amazing show that compliments ATLA in a way that is hard to accept at first.

It has a lot of problems, but if you compare it to most western shows that are 'not' ATLA, it holds up very nicely. While comparing the two is natural, it's pretty unrealistic expectations to compare it to one of the greatest shows of all time. It's not a remake, it's a sequel, it doesn't have to be as good or better than the first series. I just rewatched the whole thing, season one didn't hold up as well as I remembered (it was too short and was clearly made without future seasons in mind which hurt it in a lot of ways), Season 2 wasn't 'quite' as bad as i remembered, Season 3 and 4 were very good. All in all I can see myself continuing to slate it in with the rest of ATLA whenever I do my next rewatch of that series.

One built out purposefully in opposition of the world Aang knew and grew in. To show that from the onset, Korra was better equipped for prior eras and Aang was better set for the current era. Imo she suffered immensely, because the Avatar itself had to be adaptable to the rapidly changing times. As it stands to reason why the cycle not only did but had to become anew(it paralleled the rapid change that befell Wan's time and the inception of the Avatar).

rey itsRey there's always a possibility for more. Especially with the way both series' revival are gaining historical traction. And I understand the hurt over the lost connection. Though think about it, how much wisdom would they have for shaping a world that is moving past/around them, rather than due to them(even though Korra made big steps to balance two worlds together and bring back a part of the world that was lost; Air)? Imo, it wouldn't be much. Plus, if you also considered the fact there was a near auto fix in energy bending Korra or other Avatars could call on. Would make their threats less imposing, for obvious reasons(remember how slight trouble Aang actually had dealing with Yakone; once his ability was outed).

And it didn't feel rushed. They didn't necessarily cut any corners. It felt like Korra deserved the position we saw her last.

Just finished my rewatch of Korra, and it’s really grown on me. I used to be one of those people that always compared it to ATLA. But now that I’ve had time to rewatch and reflect, Korra has become one of my favorite characters. She’s the polar opposite from Aang, and over the course of 4 seasons developed from someone understandably overconfident to someone humbled and insightful. She’s had everything thrown at her and she’s grown so much bc of it. great video sage a re-upload still means more sage content :)

As someone who's lived their entire life encountering tragedy, sorrow, and so very much pain, that line really provides a new perspective. An especially useful one considering recent personal growth. As if to think the world would benefit so much more from the person you would become only after the trauma and suffering have taught their lessons. Hmm, more to think about I suppose. I feel like her eyes and voice when she talks to Kuvira are not dull at all. In fact I strongly feel a compassion from them. Over and over Kuvira attacks her verbally and blames her. But Korra responds with her newfound compassion. Kuvira pushes and finds a pillow. She pushes again and finds a pillow again. And in the end Korra sits down to come to the level of Kuvira, her posture attentive and caring, and verbally embraces Kuvira, disarming her completely. This is a great act of healing for the world and helps in the larger conflict. If you are Kuvira and you already lost the physical battle and you are saved by Korra. And instead of blame and hostility, you are met with compassion and kindness from a person you recently tried to kill. That person is impossible to overcome for any person. Korra in the end is a person you'd want to surrender to, if you are Kuvira. And as they walk through the portal Kuvira orders her troops: "Stand down. This battle is over. I owe the avatar my life. Her powers are beyond anything I could ever hope to achieve."

Rektz I’m not sure what you mean by that, more context would be appreciated. Korra helped repair the world (end of book 4) after indirectly leaving the Earth Kingdom power vacuum to Kuvira to control. Additionally, she changes a lot from S1 to S4 as this video explains. She becomes less aggressive and more calm, and even after Kuvira tried to incinerarte her with a plasma cannon she opted to protect her at all costs. She could’ve also have sealed Kuvira in the Spirit world somewhere, but instead took her hand and came back into the human word with her. If S1 Korra was in this situation she would’ve either let her get vaporized as a sign of “yes!! I’m the avatar and I won this fight” or would’ve left her for dead somewhere in the spirit world. Instead she was diplomatic, compassionate, and forgiving and that’s what ended Kuvira’s dictatorship.

Like many of my friends, they said that they've only seen a little bit of season 1 but didn't like it because it was so different from The Last Airbender. These friends also asked me who my favourite character in the Avatar series is. And my answer was Korra. As this video perfectly conveys why it is. I rewatched The Legend of Korra with a friend who wanted to see it and seeing Korra's journey of growth, and her resilience to overcome her suffering was exactly what I needed to inspire me in then, and even now as I type this comment. I see so much of herself in myself, and I always use her as my end goal of what I want to be when I'm at my lowest points. It hurts that so many people hate her, and disregard all the things she has done just because she's so different from Aang. Yet they don't realise that Aang would be so proud of her like I am. I love Avatar Korra, and hearing someone else say that almost brought me to tears. Thank you Sage Rain. Thank you for taking the time to so beautifully convey why you love Korra too. Some even change for the worst. And I think there’s more to connecting to your spiritual side than just being sad and depressed. These shows have shown that it requires a bit of self reflection and to know what’s holding you back mentally and emotionally. I don’t get the impression that Korra did anything like that at the end of season one. Aang just shows up and interrupts her while she’s crying. Korra's whole story about having her whole identity wrapped up in being the Avatar, i.e. being so powerful as to be a god among people, but then having that taken away time and time again is a great metaphor for everyone who lets their whole identity and self-worth get wrapped up in their work instead of who they are as a person. Who and what you are without it is something we should all take some time and think about. Relationships and jobs can come and go but they should never have any bearing on your worth as a person. Korra's story teaches us that by showing just how hard you can hit bottom after letting yourself get carried away and taken to dizzying heights of relationship / career success.

Resilience is also a Water Tribe staple, i think more so with the Southern Water Tribe, who in the previous war lost so much, but had Katara and Sokka who through that trauma did so much for the world... Korra embodies her tribe and i love that. Also she's a flawed hero, one that some of us need, someone who starts so optimistic and strong, thinking the best of the world, only to get beat down again and again and again... and even though she broke, she got up again, she became a better person, learned and matured, became what was needed the most. For herself, and the world. And a lot of that strength came from those around her, from her community, another Water Tribe staple. Its something we all need as we grow up and hit those road blocks, when we fail and get disappointed, we're not alone and sometimes its okay to need others to help you stand back up when the world has knocked you down so much. I was in a bad place when i first watched this series, reflected Korra a lot, my views might be biased from that experience, but she was certainly yhe Avatar i needed at the time, and its one of the reasons i honestly love her series over the Gaang. Can we just take a moment to really appreciate this. Not just the video which is awesome but the character korra herself. Rain touched on it but korra gets so much crap for being the self righteous and headstrong avatar that she was in the show and how everyone misses aang. But just 100 years prior that same type of avatar would have been vital in winning the war. And arguably would have been more important then aang even was (just my opinion don’t trip) but instead of the peaceful aang being where korra is now you get korra. A fighter in a time where there’s pretty much peace. Amon was a city wide threat he didn’t threaten the four nations as a whole, at least not at the time. Unaloque and vatuu were spirit world exclusive, the red lotus were taking down world governments but it was just them and a dozen followers. And finally kovira but it was even stated that the fire nation by itself would have possibly matched her in military power. The point I’m trying to make is where the fire nation 100 years ago was a global threat that everyone needed aang to stop. Korras villains were secretive or at least in their early stages of villainy. So no one thought they were a big threat therefore they didn’t rely on korra to solve it. Every time a villain shows up it’s the same message. They don’t need korra and the only people who really try to support korra are her tight group of friends. She was a fighting avatar in a time where a peaceful one was needed. Long story short, I love this story and I love korra. Honestly more then aang especially at the end.

Never really understood this interpretation about her story wherein she is needed to be an avatar for peace/diplomacy instead of a fighting one, when most of the time in the show she never once acknowledged and addressed and considered the villain's intentions in mind. In fact, the only end-goal was for her to "stop" them, not to make amends or make peace with them. She never once showed resolved to make a deal or a compromise as a form of realization like: Amon = more equality for non-benders. Vaatu = acknowledging the presence of "destruction"(death being the renewal of life) as an essential part of balance. Zaheer = the need to reform governments. Kuvira = to make her realize her methods are incorrect. In fact, most of the time as what the story writing implies, then end-goal was to stop them by subduing them, instead of making them an equal and a part of the conversation. The only time she "seems" to think of using "talking" as a solution to the problem was at the end when Kuvira, was finally helpless and powerless, and even then, it was not her who formulated the solution to the problem. It was the Earth king's nephew, so her roles was basically just to stop Kuvira which makes her "compassionate" talk more superficial rather than a presentation of growth. I mean, the first time she faces Kuvira at Zaofu, you know what her line of thinking was: "I'm back and you should stop what you're doing cuz' I'm the avatar and if you don't follow what I say, I'm going to hurt you because I'm healed now." Yes, yes, she changed. But it's written so poorly, in my opinion, so I hope you acknowledge and realize there is a legit reason why some people can't seem to empathize with you and accept your way of thinking. Of course, you can think that way and accept her journey if you want to. It's... tolerable at best, but what's wrong is antagonizing and not understanding those who have legitimate reasons to not sympathize with her character.

jintanesss yes I can see that point of view as well. But even in Atla aang was mostly trying to talk people to his side. Zuko, Ozai (some minor villains here and there) and he didn’t even bother with Azula. But in those instances where he hesitates and tries to use “compassion” it backfires. Crossroads of destiny is the main point, katara and zuko had a heart to heart about their past and really connected on a spiritual level but when the time came for zuko to make his decisions well... aang took the L. In the worse way and almost ended the avatar life cycle because of it. Again I’m not discrediting you’re points, because I actually think their completely valid. I’m just pointing out how we saw a peaceful like avatar in a war setting and how that worked out for him. And now we see a war avatar in a peaceful setting and well, you get legend of korra😂😂😂 Their just both different perspectives on the universe as a whole and It really just goes by the individual viewers personality

@@datdude2339 I can see your point in Atla, but the crossroads of destiny doesn't really sum up the entire ATLA concept of compassion. Personally, I think that scene represents Zuko's struggle within himself rather than a step towards being more compassionate. Being compassionate is not the point of his character because it's just a part of himself. Even more, what makes this episode great is that there are two possibilities that are totally valid and acceptable. That Zuko can decide and think that his destiny is to defeat the avatar and prove himself to the firelord or the other one being him joining the avatar. Both options were feasible and justifiable in accordance to his experience and sense of self. Though it would have been disappointing writing wise to see him become more evil, I can totally see it happening from a certain standpoint of his character. I also do think however that such interpretation can be acceptable depending on where you stand, because honestly it's not a bad show for me. I loved how they explored topics, only that there are choices that I disagree with.

I think people just tend to be very bias with nostalgia when it comes to Legend of Korra, constantly comparing it to the Last Airbender. They keep looking for things though a nostalgic lense to spot thiings they'd hoped and expected the show to be, and that's where things tend to go down hill. It's called "The Legend of Korra" for a reason. The story's focus was not on a single over arcing adventure to save the world, but the struggles of a single girl who thought she could take on anything. People say she doesn't really grow in the shown but that is obviously not true. One of the first instances of growth was when Korra first came face to face with Amon and her fears of losing her bending to him. It was the first instance of where her confidence truly broke down and admitting to her fears, and as Tenzin said as he comforted her, "Admitting your fears is the first and hardest step to overcoming them." It showed that Korra wasn't perfect, that just because she was the Avatar, it didn't mean she couldn't take on everything. She can't and in that moment was her first realization of it. The first mind opening moment that this world was bigger than her. She was pressured into trying to prove herself worthy of the public's desire for an Avatar, a person who could solve their problems, putting a huge weight on her shoulders. In that pressured state, she pushed herself to put on a false facade of confidence. Upon encountering Amon, this facade shattered. It was when Korra realized that being the Avatar wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and so did the public as they too, as the story progressed, began to doubt the capabilities and power of the Avatar, and thus the idea that she wasn't needed later on in later chapters. Korra had to rebuild her confidence and continue on being the Avatar she thought she needed to be, to try and live up to the expectations that were on the verge of fading away into skepticism. Of course, as we all know, time and time again, her idea of the Avatar being needed to be the hero was again and again challenged as more and more people began to think that the Avatar was nothing more than a figure head with no evidence to back up her supposed skills of leadership and strength. She was over the course of the show told that she wasn't needed. Korra wanted to feel needed as the Avatar, it was in that mindset that the Avatar was someone the world always needed, what the public needed. It wasn't until toward the end that she realized, she wasn't suppose to be the Avatar that the people needed, but what she herself wanted to be. She learned that no matter what, she was the Avatar, and that the Avatar wasn't someone that was just there to protect the world, but someone who would always do the right thing, no matter the odds against her. To accept whatever darkness may come and prosper in the light that shall never be taken for granted. To accept the world as it is, and accept herself and her limitations and learn from them. If I were to draw a connection to anything to Korra, it would be to the movie Moana, who goes through a similar arc in character growth. Like Korra, she was given an important role to save the world. Although unlike Korra, she didn't want the expectations, she was quick to accept what she had to do and go on her journey. Of course, she soon came to realize that she couldn't easily live up to what was expected of her. She constantly thought that she was suppose to be the hero, get Maui to Te Fiti, and return the heart because the ocean choose her to. In her lowest moment, Moana doubted herself, believing that she wasn't needed, that she wasn't the right person for the job. It wasn't until her grandmother reminded her that who she was and what her destiny was wasn't something dictated by the ocean, but by what she learned, where she comes from, and what she stands for as her own person, allowing for Moana to realized that she is still herself, no matter what. That these expectations didn't define who she should be. This one line in her reprise, "I am moana" best sums up her realization pretty accurately. "And the call isn't out there at all, it's inside me. It's like the tide, always falling and rising." And it also sums up Korra and her realization. The Avatar isn't someone the world decides what they are, it's what she decides it to be, who she is deep inside. This call within her fell when her ideologies of the Avatar were challenged and rose when she strengthened her resolve of being someone that will always stand up and do what's right.

Both of their stories work so well for me. Because the Avatar is this incredibly powerful, ancient being, so it should be a story of going from strength to strength and being naturally gifted and all that. But for both of these people, the things that were most important for them to do were the things that required the most challenge and effort, and like you mention, their times were not naturally well suited for them. That was what helped them become that well-rounded person, and the Avatar's story is a very human story, not a god's story.

I think the problem with Legend of Korra is that it doesn't stick to one plotline. It goes from one bullshit problem to another, not giving time to flesh the characters out. The best episodes of Avatar are usually the ones that focus on a singular character, but Legend of Korra didn't have any of that. If they spread Korra's journey through depression over the course of the 3 years as the final season, it would've been beautiful, and the show would've redeemed itself. But after one episode, its back to another big bad villain and big laserbeam meka suits. I love Korra the character, I hate Korra the show, especially since it had so much potential.

Bubbly tbf, if you watch carefully each villain does something that allows the next villain to rise. Amon convinced the people of republic city to reject the avatar thus reject spirits more and more, which prompted unalok to want to restore co existence of spirits and humans on the same plane so people would respect the spiritual side of the world which led him down a path of lust for power. After harmonic convergence because of unalok airbenders form out of thin air to restore the balance of the nations, which in turn allowed Zaheer to escape. During his time in imprisonment he’d grown a resentment for a being that is chosen by mere chance without any say of the public, basically saying what’s to say the next avatar won’t just abuse their power and use it to instill fear or domination. Which is why he sought to end all governments by causing chaos in killing the governments to the instill freedom with order while also ending the avatar cycle to not risk an avatar being evil or tyrannical, though he was wrong because freedom with no order is just chaos, and due to him cleansing the governments in his journey he murdered the earth kingdom queen, which allowed a military leader named kuvira to rise atop the ranks and to unite the earth kingdom with military force since the kingdom split apart due to indecisive rulings and chaos. Kuvira sought to restore order herself and succeeded despite Korra attempting to stop her. But even so she becomes corrupted in her new found power and leadership. And instead of stopping at the earth kingdom she sought to conquer even more by harvesting energy from the spiritual tree. Each villain had a cause and effect on the next one. That’s why I don’t believe it’s bs problems

Unalaq opens portals and almost destroys the world, but in the aftermath, korra decides leaving the portals open is the right choice, which essentially meant Unalaq was right all along. This video reminds me about how amazing the show is with Korea’s growth and makes me want to rewatch it so I can relive the magic of everything about it all over again. I love the format of your videos short but impactful and right to the point and the editing and music is perfect. This video really touched my heart in the best way possible. It honestly make me want to cry. I kinda wish I had a cool quote to end this off with but I don’t. I just love this so much. I hope everyone reading this knows that you are so much stronger and smarter than you think and that you are amazing and deserve love and the world. There will be tough times yeah, but I know you have the ability to get through it and be stronger coming out of it. Stay beautiful everyone! ❤️

Damn, this video hit me hard. All your videos tend to hit me in the feels. Great job! I'm in the process of rewatching LOK and am halfway through season 3. Seeing her subtle growth over the course of the show is great. Her story is in some ways the opposite of Aang's. Aang never wanted to be the Avatar, but when the time came, he embraced his role with compassion and strength. On the other hand, Korra always wanted to be the Avatar and thought she could fight her way out of a tough situation. She slowly learned that she was mistaken and through hardship we found her place in the world and brought balance to herself. I teared up a ton of times in this video and it just goes to show that this show had something important and special to tell the audience. While there may be certain things the show could have done better, overall it is a story worth telling and Korra is a deep, nuanced character by the end of it.

Thank you for making this video. I kinda always wanted to make a video outlining these points, and its good to see you and a few others sharing your perspectives on her growth. I think she's an incredible character, in my opinion probably one of the best main characters of any show or movie i can think of so its nice to see her get some credit

Damn this made me tear up. I've never loved a character as much as I love Korra, she's amazing and sooo resilient 😢 it's a shame there's so much rabid hate against this wonderful character due to the fact her show is a sequel.

The amount of hate Korra gets its disproportionate with the flaws of the character
