There was time I thought I could not learn certain songs, until I learned jazz chords from a old man. I was so intrigued on how he played guitar that I made it a serious time to learn and listen. that I mastered the song the girl from Ipanema, and you talk about jazz Cords.I never did learn how to read music,,but I have a wonderful ear for it. I can listen to a song and I can learn how to play by ear.

  • @snardash_1197

Abuv Entertainment too many modes. Depends on what youre playing. But most of the time there are a ton of modes in one piece. Arpeggios are important too. Hitting sweet spots of chords in strong beats and doing notes that connect those sweet spots in weak beats is also important. Thats just without sustitutions or any of the other voicings like flat 9th, 11ths or whatever. So no, its not about just playing chromatic or melodic minor. Im learning jazz but Im no jazz fan or anything like that, so yeah, not trying to defend it like its "the hardest thing ever". But at a certain level it is.

Very nice indeed. I've been reviewing several of your videos since I discovered you and one of the things I want to point out is the presence of what I refer to as a GOOD AMATEUR TONE. Now before you think that I am criticizing you, please take this as a compliment. Today's pro players record with such a plethora of digital sound enhancing effects in their signal chain as to make the entire instrument sound "artificial". It is very comforting to hear someone who is NOT recording in a mega million dollar studio, playing great tunes, with great technique, and an HONEST sound. Keep up the good work and please continue sharing your videos as they are wonderful!

The tone and technique are incredible. I know this is old, but some of the first solo chorus felt sort of too much like scale / arpeggio practice rather than actual jazz phrasing. It got better though and all around was a fantastic take! Good job :)

I feel really conflicted about this. It's hard to describe what I'm hearing, but it sounds kind of mechanical to me, like I can predict everything that's going to happen. It seems like it switches hard between a very simplistic melody where every note has the same amount of space in front and behind it, to a more complex and interesting melody where he does some interesting stuff with sweep picking, changing up the syncopation, and etc. In other words, it feels like there's not a middle ground between the two - it's either one or the other. Of course you have to have something simple and less complex to appreciate the stuff that does have complexity. But I guess I feel like the parts that are less complex are watered down perhaps a bit too much. Why not change the spacing between the notes a little bit, or swing it a little bit more in those parts? That's not to say that I didn't enjoy this arrangement overall, and this guitarist is clearly quite skilled. I just feel like perhaps he could've done the piece more justice with his skills, and made it a bit more interesting. But, it's also possible that I'm missing the point of jazz. Perhaps this is the ultimate expression of jazz guitar and I'm just too currently ignorant to understand it.

What you're noticing is the fundamental form of jazz. The main soloist plays the "head" of a piece which is generally the main written melody of a jazz standard like Autumn Leaves. It's usually simplistic, especially for old ones and often only notated with a single melody line and a chord progression. After the lead soloist plays the head, then the rhythm section plays their accompaniment again from the beginning, allowing the soloist to improvise on top of the chord progression of the original melody. That's why there is what feels like a sudden spike in complexity from the guitarist. At this point, there are several directions that could be taken for the song. The improvisation could be given to other members of the band like the drummer or bassist, the head could be played again by another band member, or an outro version of the head could be played. The formula had differed and been broken or rearranged depending on the band and style, but that's generally the fundamentals of it all.

Off the top it would be only fair to acknowledge that I also admire the arrangement and can't play guitar at this level of achievement, but with that admitted, what Lucas Mills is describing makes sense. There are parts that seem mechanical, less inspired, that don't have anything to do with not understanding the role of the "head" of the piece, the restating the melody, but do seem to my ear to be more memorized, with less free flowing playing. The comment, "Why not change the spacing between the notes a little bit, or swing it a little bit more in those parts?" is good advice, and we can all use that from time to time. Listen to Miles Davis or any of the jazz legends who used the melody of a song in many creative ways and the difference is apparent. It's not the imagination of Lucas Mills at work, just the truth. That said, the interpretation of the song stuck with me long enough that I remembered it years later and listened again, which also says something very positive about the playing of Eddie Lastra. It is a good jazz guitar sound and it makes me wonder what his set-up was for the song.
