Automower Answers: Wheel Motor Replacement & How To Fix A Seized Wheel Motor

Фильм және анимация

If you have experienced a wheel motor failure on your @Husqvarna Automower and are worried about it happening again, then this is the video for you! In this episode of Automower Answers we show you the basis of how to replace a bad wheel motor assembly AND we show you a trick to possibly get a few more months of use out of your old wheel motor. A wheel motor replacement is not a complicated procedure. If your mower is out of warranty a wheel motor replacement is something fairly simple that you can do on your own. All you will need to do is purchase a new wheel motor from your local authorized Automower dealer, or if you do not have a local dealer you can email Automowerinfo@Gmail.com to purchase one trough a dealer. Wheel motor failures are random and as we all know, when there is a reoccurring issue Husqvarna digs into it immediately to make improvements and solve the issue. They have made changes and improvements to the wheel motor assemblies to extend the life of them. Now we know many of you are looking for that "AH HA!" moment where you finally find the big kink in the armor of the Automower and have that reason NOT to buy one, well this is NOT it. Even if you went to the extreme scenario of for some reason being FORCED to replace BOTH wheel motors every moving season you are still not going to be anywhere near the operating cost or upkeep and maintenance of a lawn tractor.

    You are a godsend. Opened my wheel motor and found that exact problem. Instead of paying €250 for a replacement I spent €5 on grease for the gears and motor is working away as normal

    I really appreciate all the info you have on the automowers. I just used this tutorial to fix one of my 450x. Grease was completely gone. Was able to totally disassemble the motor (did both motors) and free it up following your steps. The mower has 5300 hours on it so I'm probably to late to completely save the mower, but now it will limp through till I receive the motors I ordered. The only grease I had was white marine lithium grease. Hope this will do no harm. I think I might start making a maintenance schedule to check the motors every year. Both my mowers pretty much run constantly since I'm cutting 2 acers with hills. Thanks again and keep up the great work. subscribed and liked

    Thanks for the feedback. In the case of your wheel motors, it sounds like any grease is better than no grease.

    Great video and I found exactly what you predicted in my 450xh. Pity Husqvarna doesn't use a better gearing here as the replacement is pretty expensive. Thanks again!

    A thousand thanks to EschelmaniaTV. I owe you big time as you have made the Automower experience feasible and enjoyable! Andrew Woulfe, Thanks for sharing your experience with your wheel motor. Let us know how it lasts? In the Florida heat I had a problem motor after a year and removed and opened up the wheel motor. The electric motor side turned smoothly. The wheel side with all the little plastic gears could be turned, but it was jumpy like a car wheel with bad bearings. It loosened up pretty well with the WD-40 as video suggests, but it still had sort of a grinding feel to it. I ended up taking the three visible plastic gears and the rotating plate to which they were fitted out and washed them in mineral spirits. I then took out the long screws and went another layer deeper to expose another set of the same gears. I washed it out with mineral spirits and greased it with regular grease, It turned ok without the grease in a rough sort of way, but with the grease it was pretty tight and still felt like a bad bearing, but about then I concluded that the motor I got on eBay from a dealer supplier for $130 was probably worth it. Of course, my motor only had 2100 hours on it so you can see that if I were to replace both motors each year that would be $250 or more per 315 mower that I have each year. That could add up so maintenance would be great if it helps. I operate 2 of the 315 models 12 hours a day for 9 months a year. If parts become scarce then I guess it will be time to dig a little further and see if I could find a bearing, but how likely is that? My second wheel is a little tight, and why wouldn't it be in just as bad a condition?? So, I probably will spend another $130 to have one on hand and feel sure it will be needed soon. BTW, my mower is in warranty. I called the local Husq. authorized facility and they laughed and said they didn't work on robot mowers. So I gave up on warranty although somewhere there is probably a tech that knows what to do like our video creator who is genius! Another thing I learned in this exercise is that when I cleaned up the mower to take it to the shop I had carefully used the hose. There wasn't much water inside, but enough to discourage me from doing it again. The little moisture I found was around the mowing motor compartment under the adjustment know and gear. To tell the truth I think the hose would have been OK if not for the opening where the height adjustment knob protrudes. Frankly, I could do without the adjustment since it stays on high always so I may just do something to seal that off permanently, but there is one other place that is concerning a little and that is where the lid is hinged, but I did not see any moisture around there. On the other hand just dry cleaning is probably sufficient and the best after all. If the wheel motors are going to be the Achilles heel and last only a year then we need some good Chinese motor to swap out regularly or find bearings or something.

    This video really helped me.......... So today Larry (430x)bit the dust. A lot of grinding noises from one wheel, but no drive. And the other motor was grinding but still driving. He's been making noises for the last month. So apart he had to come! The problem is the final planetary drive to the wheels. The motors are OK, the helical gear on the motor is OK, the 4 nylon (yep plastic!) planetary gears that drive the intermediate gear are OK, that gear is OK, as are the 4 metal planetary gears inside the wheel assembly, but there's something very wrong in there. Whatever they drive is broken on one motor and breaking on the other. Of course it had to be the bit I can't get into and as Husqvarna only sell complete motor/gearbox units I've now got 2 units on order. At the same time I've replaced all 4 joysticks,which I should've done last year! To all you owners out there, these changes are really to do, the mowers are really simple inside and very easy to work on. Just make sure you put some WD40 on all the screws first. I know Husqvarna have upgraded these motor/gearbox units, so if you have to order some make sure you insist on the new type (surprise surprise, the motor is the same but the gearbox is stronger) Larry has done over 9000kms in the 4 years I've had him and my ground is far from perfect. Hopefully I'll get another 4 years before I need to work on him again .......... thanks guys, stay safe

    Thanks for this video. My wheel motor is being replaced by dealer at my expense. When I pointed out the grease issue they could not remove the screws to check the gears so when I get it back I will do so. I fear the other wheel has hardened grease as well and I want to clean it. At least I can experiment with the old motor. Can we get the software? Will the software check the guide wire sensor board? I unspectacular a problem with it as well. Also where can I get the torque manual?

    Good, practical advice. Should cleaning both planetary gears and housings be regularly scheduled preventative maintenance? I saw a video from "L S" where he removed the planetary gears on a 450x without opening the Automower. He found the grease had solidified at 1600 hours and recommended servicing planetary gears at about 1000 hours. Good idea?

  • @EshlemaniaTV

    @EshlemaniaTV

    Not really a good idea and the reason why is because the grease burns up because either the electric part of the wheel motor over heats, or because the bearing is going bad and over heats. So the grease in the gears burning up is just a reaction to the real issue and not the actual cause of the issue.

    Take the wheel off, remove the back cover from the wheel. You will probably find clumps of hard dried up grass inside there that was rattling around.

    Thanks a lot, I really enjoyed your video, sweet and to the point with the solution... my problem was I was unable to take the 4 small screws arround the motor To separate the gear case from the motor, I heat them with soldering gun but no luck I strip 2 of them, any advise before buying replacement motor $230USD?

    The new version of wheel motor is much better than these older versions. I would recommend just upgrading to the new version rather than repairing one of the older ones. But if you are buying a "NEW" wheel motor for $230, then you might want to make sure that it is actually the latest version and not leftovers that have been laying around on a dealers shelf for years. Here's what to look for to make sure you are getting the latest version: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nXqcw9WOc7Svm7Q.html

    The big question is how much fat to put in the gearbox? I calculated up to 3.4 grams. but considering that there is fat in the gears still, then it must be a little less? "Everyone is going to be a robot technician in the future."
