My very first experince with Autocad was back in the 80s when Autocad was distributed in 1/2 dozen floppies, and we used to save our "master creations" on 90 minutes cassetes. Am I too old?, Never too old to learn though, just think all that experience that I have gained over the past 45 years, just sorry for all those draftsmen that buried their heads in the sand thinking and 'hoping' that CAD will never take off, like my brother!. -:(

Hi Z ... my experience foes back to just 1989 ... we could save to floppy disks at least. It's all changing again I'm afraid - the BIM revolution is sweeping the world. Drafting skills whether CAD or manual are under threat. Best regards.

Good Phil, the UCS is just as useful in 2D as it is in 3D - like if you have two objects at different angles to each other but you want to work parrallel/perpendicular to each one. Align the UCs with any line on the object UCS (return) OB (for object) (return) then pick a line. You can save UCS'es if you are gonna use them again - UCS (return) S (return) and type in a name. DDUCS for a dialogue box showing all your UCS'es you have created. Regards

Thank you so much for your tutorial. I've learned a lot. I followed the tutorial step by step and saved a final drawing of the spaceship cockpit. Could you help me with this one? I'm using AutoCAD 2015. At 17:14 I couldn't make two parallel PLs. I have problem with the UCS. X, Y and Z have different directions.

I really appreciate your fast response. I will surly be trying out these new functions next design session. Im doing tons of surface modeling now so I think will help me cut, and slice along these weird angles. Do you have any suggestions of how to cut holes in curves surfaces with more precision? I usually extrude from top, the length, then have two slicing planes or surfaces for the thickness desired. Then I will make the shape a block encase I want to reuse, but sl for the void in it's place.

excellent tutorial! I just came from a video that would have you think the best way to draw in different ucs's was to always draw on the default plane and then use 3d rotate to align it on the correct plane >.< I knew there was a better way, that was just ridiculous. I was able to put this into practice immediately and was able to follow your progress throughout, thanks for putting this out there!

I hope this makes sense. I have a question in regards to the slicing command. I don't understand why the slice tool didn't just slice everything all the way through the slope side? How did it know to 1. Not cut out I giant hole including your window. 2. How did it know to do a parallel cut with the ucs titled slope?

Hi. Slice just chops off everything in the opposite direction of your third pick. Picks 1 and 2 define the plane and the third pick is identifying any point above or below the slice plane. If third pick is above - everything below gets chopped away, and vice-versa. Hope that makes some sense too.

Is there any software for venue builders that integrate with products? In particular I'm trying to build a event space/magic theater. I'd like to have the ability for vendors (examples seats, toilets) to upload their products so they can be dragged and dropped onto existing projects like this. More of WSIWYG for venues and event spaces...

Well done - I'll remember that one! The error messages really don't give any clues do they? I sometimes have to redraw shapes a few times until it is happy to do some operations ... no logic or so it seems.

Hiya. extrude allows you to follow paths which means you can skew shapes. Where I can I use press-pull to lengthen or shorten objects. I confess I use extrude more because it has been in the software far longer than press-pull. Press pull came along once they saw how popular SketchUp became. Whichever way you get the end shape is fine.

how do you stop the soft from chaning when you pick a guitar soft or so, it softs different when i test it out on the side and different

it to multi-track record. I would play with an effect or two on my recordings, but I never touched the soft role or the step sequencer.

Hi Nathan. try exploding the polylines, just X to get the command - sometimes polylines doggedly refuse to play ball. Be careful not to explode any of the solids you have already made ... just the polylines.

Nathan Kerxhalli The latest version of AutoCAD is pretty annoying when it comes to working in 3D - the UCSFOLLOW setting is really difficult to disable. It's supposed to help you but ... it doesn't.

Hi Nam. I don't thik there is a shortcut for UCS - because you can set it to ANY face/angle you have an infinite number of UCS's and therefore there would not be enough shortcut combos. You can save a UCS. UCS ret. S ret. . Use DDUCS to get see a list of the UCS'es. UCS ret. R ret. and then the name of the UCs you saved ret. will bring it back. Use very short 1 letter or 1 number names. The co-ordinates section on the 3D modelling ribbon shows a drop down list of your UCs's.

Very much enjoying the videos - I do have a question regarding the shell operation, however. I've followed along and seem to get an endless loop when trying to make an inside shell for the cockpit - it just gives me "modeling operation error: Change in topology detected", and goes on to ask me to enter a body editing operation. I've now tried this with many different extruded shapes and it's always the same. Has this ever happened to you? Thanks in advance

hello OP, I am a heavy hotkey user when it comes to autocad/cadworx software's. I dont use the ribbon functionality when it comes to either software. My question for you is, do you know if there is a quick switch for UCS directions? For example, in one of the software's that i use, if i were to hit CTRL+E, it changes the UCS direction without me having to actually click on the toolbar. Does this function work on ACAD as well? if so, what is the hotkey to do it. Thanks in advance.

I try to extrude the triangle but it goes up instead of to the left or right as yours does 😔 I’m using the 2020 cad and also on a Mac .. not sure if it makes any difference.. plus I’m new at this lol

Can you please tell me, The last command of Mesh (Smooth Mesh) is also there in Autocad 2007 or its only in the 2013. If it is then where can i find it coz i searched allot.. :(

Sometimes AutoCAD gets itself screwed up - it says it's in a certain named UCS but it might not be. Switch to a different one altogether, come back to the one you want (in your case the 'right' one) and try again. That's all I think it could be that's thwarting you.

When u trimmed in 3d, how does autocad determine which direction ur boundary lines are projected to trim the line(to be trimmed)? Does it depend on ur ucs?

Yes Sunny - if you imagine looking in the plan view in the UCS you are in - then you would see the lines overlapping or touching and they can then trim. Sometimes polylines misbehave and need exploded before they trim properly.

Sunny Chien Hiya - I don't know but if you have the xrefs in the same folder as the drawing it always loads them ... that might be a way of starting it.

First of all thanks for the vids they are great. I have one questions though. In previous videos you mentioned that polylines only ever go flat, not up. But in this vid you make a triangle with the polyline, I have tried it but it does not work. What am I missing?

Hi Julian - The UCS has been tipped up first ... it's the Z co-ordinate for the polyline that won't vary from the place that it is started at. Look at which way the Z axis is pointing when the triangle is drawn. Difficult to put in to words. Hope that explains it.

2013. You can 'park' the command prompt.There's a strip of 10 dots on the left side - pick and hold that then move it up and then down to the bottom of the screen, when it's close to the bottom it will jump outwards, let go at that point and it will look like it does in my vid. I don't like the floating one - it's distracting. Give yourself at least 4lines of prompt area so you can see system responses. F2 shows you the whole command prompt in a page format if you need to 'look back'. Regards

Hi Adolfo - It's not available on the ribbons - it's used in creating 'legacy' meshes (old school) which are fine for most visualising work but if it's a situation that needs specific 'objects' like nurbs curves then these type of faces might be overlooked or not translate. never ran in to any problems myself using them but there may be software/translation situations that might not recognise them.

I watched tNice tutorials video and now I'm doing quarantine vids with Richard D. Jas and doing a lot of cocaine.

No Abid - those clever mesh tools only appeared in release 2011 I think. Good for product design people.

I love this tutorial, Just 1 comment, The way the model look seems like a not perfect perspective view. How can you make it more like perspective view?

Hiya - thanks for the thumbs up. If you look at the right edge of the screen you'll find the orbit command - generally this is set to be like an axonometric/isometric type view - they call this Parallel Projection because anything that's vertical stays parallel - makes it easy to see if things line up. If you right click anywhere on screen you get options for the orbit command and you should see 'Perspective Projection' available. It's not very dramatic ... to get it more dramatic zoom away from your object first while in 'Parrallel Projection' and then switch to perspective and zoom back in. You only get this perspective option when you use orbit from the Navbar on right hand side BTW.

Sometimes trimming problems are to do with the line being a polyline ... try exploding both lines first just to make sure neither is a polyline.

in autocad 2017 I cannot trim the line using the polylines as cutting edges because they do not intersect

Lines do not have to touch/intersect each other before you can trim them - there can be clear space between them - as long as the UCS is in the correct alignment you should be able to trim a line that is above or below the cutter.

I cannot get my shell command to work

im having a UCS issue. when im trying to draw the lines to create the side windows from the slanted rectangle. i cant select the corner, and when i do it keeps switching to the UCS that we configured to draw the recantgle. help please, otherwise this has been very useful

Hi Marcus - it's because you have one of the 'helper tools' active - very bottom of your AutoCAD display ... 9th 'helper' along - 'Allow/Disallow Dynamic UCS' - switch that off and things should behave then. Pressing F6 does the same. I usually only use Ortho and Object Snaps and leave the rest switched off.
