    Yesterday I had a good example of why it's a good idea to be prepared whenever you drive. Crossing the border into the US to drive to MA for my step mother's long delayed funeral, border crossing shut down for over 2 hours due to a system outage. Security agents walking down the very long lines of vehicles occasionally to tell people to get back in their vehicles and be patient. Some folks were honking horns, getting impatient, yelling that they needed food or a toilet. I pulled my collapsible mug and a packet of miso soup out of my tote bag, poured out some hot water from the thermos at my feet, and calmly sipped miso soup, nibbled senbai, and read a book until things started moving again. Later in the day, I stopped to have a snack at a service center that was closed down - they had a gas pump and a porta pottie, everything else closed. I watched an older lady walk toward the porta potty, open door, and sort of jump back in horror. I was able to hand her a sealed "Potty pack" which had a seat wipe, hand wipe, tushie wipe, seat cover, and paper. It was enough clean stuff to allow her to use it. (Yes, they are a real product, from the company by the same name!)

    I have hiking sticks, two folding chairs and a folding table (they fold into carry sacks and have tent pole style legs), a bivy, a small tarp, a rain poncho/shelter, hat and gloves, walking shoes, cashmere socks (so warm!),-first aid kit, a daypack with the essentials, but no clothes at the moment. I need to add a few things. I keep a Matador blanket, small first aid kit, Swiss Army knife, flashlight, folding eating utensils, a water bottle, snacks, Budi and power brick, shopping bag, mirror with light, eye drops, meds, pen, pad, small tablet, in my purse, and an insulated thermos for coffee/hot water in the console. We're required to have a breakdown kit in the car, which has jumper cables, fix a flat, high-viz vest, reflective triangle, jack, and flashlight. I also have a strip flashlight with different settings that has magnets so it can stick to the inside of the hood, if necessary. My partner thinks I'm mad.

    @@TheoryofSimple Wouldn't that be fun! I'm in Ireland. But I lived in Orange County for 23 years. An earthquake kit was practically mandatory, and I still carry the same things walking here as I did in the San Bernardino Mountains - except pepper spray. It's illegal here.

    @@TheoryofSimple we don't have any dangerous animals, except the occasional stag or bull, and they're easy enough to avoid. I'm legally entitled to defend my home, if I'm in it. In the wild, my wits are my only defense. Everything you could think of to defend yourself, barring martial arts (and it wouldn't want to have lethal consequences) are illegal. Fortunately, Ireland is still one of the safest countries for women, although domestic violence is not uncommon. There's a thing called the 2019 Women's Danger Index, which scores countries from most dangerous (highest score) to least (lowest score). Ireland is at the bottom, with only Singapore and Spain having lower scores. But, like everywhere, violence towards women is increasing. There was a highly publicised murder of a young woman in the last year, who was attacked while on her daily walk, but I have heard nothing about making self-defense easier for women.

  • @TheoryofSimple

    @TheoryofSimple

    6 ай бұрын

    @@curious855 it is so sad to hear that violence against women, men rising,. I’m really not understanding why that is.. but I do know that, even though it would be illegal for me to carry something like pepper spray, I would be carrying some sort of multitool or blade or something like a good heavy, walking stick that I could use as a self-defense tool. I guess I’ve just had too many times where either somebody weird started following me and I just felt really uneasy, and wanted to have options for protection. Thank you for sharing that background and everything with us.💕😊

    Excellent video! Colin Fletcher wrote a great book on backpacking that has a list of the 10 essentials of Camping. That is my go to list for emergency supplies to keep in my car. First, I keep an extra days worth of my meds in my purse at all times. Chemical hand warmers, non-perishable food, water, first aid kit, pocket knife with multi-tool, extra batteries, waterproof matches, extra jacket & socks, & a rain poncho all in a sturdy back pack, An emergency car kit, weather dependent supplies, weather radio, and a blanket stay in my car as well. Also don’t forget to refresh your kit yearly! Products expire, meds also, & batteries go bad. My Tip: A pack of baby wipes and a microfiber cloth are invaluable.

    I have several items for winter survival in my car. One thing I have is a plastic toga that I can throw over me in case I need to change my clothes. A woman invented it. Wish she had back in my 20's when I used to scuba dive...LoL. Anyway it is available if I had to car camp or if my clothes get dirty( such as vomit or stuck in bad weather) and need to change clothes.

    Hi Eunice, you are really speaking my language here! Growing up in the Great White North, where for at least 4 months a year, getting stuck in your car could become a death sentence, we learn to prepare our vehicles for emergencies before we learn to drive. Where I live, items for winter survival take priority, so I have many more warmth items. (One tip for winter sleeping in your car here: unless you are wearing snow boots, take off your boots and wet socks, put on the wool socks you keep in your car, then place an activated hand warmer along the bottom of each foot, then top with heavy wool slipper socks, then finally wrap feet in a survival blanket. All of that will go into your emergency bivvy with the rest of your body!) In cold climates, taking care of your feet in the cold is essential, every winter one hears at least one story of someone being stuck in their vehicle overnight and needing to have their feet amputated due to frostbite.) I would love to have a vehicle like yours, mine is much smaller and less well thought out in its design (it was literally the only small crossover in the car place when my venerable old steed gave up the ghost). Far less space in mine, so I need to rely more on organizers slung over seats. Molle back seat organizers on both back seats filled with pouches of useful stuff, including a small Barocook and fuel packets for heating food or water inside the car and a small fire extinguisher, a combination trash bag/tissue holder on the front seat, a cute front seat organizer from Vera Bradley that doubles as a walker organizer when I need to walk around stores and use my walker for pain. I also keep an unexpected motel stay bag in my car for those times I might need to stay somewhere without having planned it, a cook/drink kit with a single walled water bottle in a molle water bottle bag, and a Mountain House bucket in case of longer stay (the bucket takes up more space, but helps cut down on rats and mice getting into it - in my very old house and alleyway shed garage, mice and rats are an enormous problem.) Some of the things you mention, like pepper spray, are illegal here. I discovered a while back that US border guards get very shirty about people having anything in their vehicle when crossing the border (enough cash for a couple of nights at a motel in my wheel well got me stuck in secondary for about 3 hours when I crossed the border a few months ago), so I tend to take nearly everything out when I cross the border. I am doing that fairly frequently at present, living on a border city - usually to shop or pick up some gadget I've ordered from your Amazon shop which I can't find here in Canada. I have to be very careful, but I do keep the classic AAA emergency bag, which doesn't usually raise eyebrows, with a few small additions, and a water bottle, and a VSSL flashlight filled with small emergency supplies in my glove box. That doesn't appear to be suspicious. But I feel better when I can stay this side of the border and keep all my winter necessities in the car.

    I have a lot of the items you have, but not nearly as much or as organized as yours....I need to remedy that! I have 2 dogs, so I have a bag for them with water bowls, a couple of bottles of water (that get replaced regularly), extra collars and leashes ( I had a collar break on a walk once), pre-packaged treats, toys, poop bags, etc. They have harnesses and seat belts attachments as well, and they each have a bed in the backseat to be nice and comfy on long rides. They also each have a backpack so they can help carry the load if needed! Oh, and they are very protective, so great deterrents to shady folks. They are with me most of the time.

    Great video! You shared several items I need to add to my vehicle. I don’t have a need for much survival gear, and I live where it gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so probably couldn’t carry some of the pressurized items you have on an everyday basis. Would definitely throw them in for camping! I always have a dog leash in case I come across a lost dog, heavy duty gloves for unexpected and unpleasant tasks, packing tape for closing a package, a few stamps in case I remember I need to mail a birthday card while I’m out running errands, a pair of socks because I inevitably decide to stop and try on shoes on a day I’m wearing flip flops, and I always have scissors and probably use them weekly - if only to open snacks. ;)

    Great video!!! I love how you put eye wound care in your first aid kit. It's not common to see someone else that does that. Keeping safety goggles is a good idea too. I keep a lot of things in my car. I have an emergency radio that is solar/handcrank/battery powered (which has a flashlight, flasher, and can charge things) in my car emergency backpack. I also have a small device that is a personal alarm, glass breaker, seatbelt cutter, blade protector for the seatbelt cutter that glows in the dark, a flashlight, and an emergency flasher. I also bring my Swiss Champ knife, a slingshot, ammo, pepper gel, a stun gun/flashlight combo, an emergency blanket, an emergency bivvy, a fire kit, a solar panel, USB batteries, etc. I keep a fishing vest in the car to keep important items on your person.

Since kits are not easily accessible here in the states, I’ve been watching how female car campers are solving the issue. Oh my your my kind of gal, I have many things you have including the mesh screen I also have strong magnets to keep it down tighter. I have a disposable toilet from daiso it is just a bag that gelifies the liquid. I have large trash bag in case you never know if you gotta have watery number 2. There has been many long traffic in Hawaii and you never know. I also carry doggy pee pad again you never know. I have used water bottles with water but not for drinking for washing hand or washing whatever you need to wash. Also I always bring new bottle of water for drinking. I don’t have tools, but if I lived in a large state like you I probably would. Here in Hawaii we can go around the island in a day so no need for tools I also have AAA. I do however have a battery charger and an extra phone, Tmobile plan I have allows for very cheap phone lines so I have in my glove compartment. I also take that extra phone while traveling. In the glove compartment I keep extra charger and extra phone, also have my garage opener in there, cause just like you, dont want to draw attention. I have umbrella and doggie stroller in the back. I don’t have extra hundred to keep in car, but I have around ten dollars of bills and coins in my daiso small container with car wash coupons for those drive through restaurants like McDonald’s. I have reading glasses and sunglasses and other glasses in the console. Also I have jacket and sweater which I keep over my seat. But you gave me a good idea I should keep a poncho the cheap kind from Walmart, I better put one in my car. I also have extra slippers crocs that I keep, because several times my shoes have broken, so if my shoes break I can put on extra slipper from trunk. If I lived on the mainland then it would be sneakers, here Hawaii we can do slippers. Again it’s a small island so water is all I would need, cause I do have AAA, but there was a time that traffic was so backlogged people were stuck like over 12 hrs, someone hit the overpass that was a nightmare. So I often wondered about people who had kids, elderly or even sick people what they could do if they needed to drink, eat especially diabetics or children. When I have the grandkids I always have goodies in the car, just me usually only water, so your ideas are very good in fact excellent. Especially for a large state like California. Thank you for this very informative, interesting entertaining video. Thumbs up

For me I know it changes from season to season and of course with teens now they are responsible for putting a backpack together. Leave it the inside of the room or if the weather forcast is not looking great then downstairs, recheck, charge all electronics and have powerbanks all ready now. OMG that portable fire extinguisher I need to get one. Just for me if I travel over an hour away from home I ensure that I have jackets to just a jogging type of clothing with socks and shoes. We've been looking for three or four years and he was absolutely was the guy to go to cuz we have me and my wife and took two grandchildren 2 and 4 years old and he was the only the one that ever mentioned about 3 point seat belts because three or four years ago. None of these class B RVs had 3 point seat belts for the kids, Just lap belts. There was never nowhere for the grandchildren. Now my finally almost all class b RVs have 3. belts and the little two seats behind the driver are so perfect We're actually in about 7 to 10 days picking up our brand new first time Winnebago Solis px, a limited spit orange as bright as it can be orange and they're just offering like two per dealer. So we're very excited and we'll take a spring break trip here. We live in Galveston, Texas and we will be going to around Kerrville Texas on the other side of San Antonio to like a Jellystone park for a stuff for the kids so we're very excited

    Oh, just a wee comment about water: should you be in your vehicle for longer than anticipated and run out of water, it can be handy to have backups in there all the time. The smallest size plano plastic ammo cans will accommodate a whole bunch of those emergency packets of water, all standing on end. I keep one on the floor all the time, along with a similar small plastic box filled with lifeboat rations, just in case.

    I don’t carry water in my car in the winter here in Alaska as they will tend to freeze if left in the car. We park in our garages, but I worry about the water freezing if I am out all day. Does anyone have ideas on this? How do you store water in your vehicle in winter in temperatures below freezing?

  • @jenharvey3397

    @jenharvey3397

    @@akliana I live in Canada, so things also freeze if left in a car here in winter (that's why I don't leave glass bottles in the car - they work for Eunice where she lives, but not in Ontario!) The ones I store are the small 4 ounce mylar packets from the same companies that make the lifeboat rations (Datrex and Mainstay). Yes, they can freeze, although the mylar seems to offer some protection. But they are so skinny that they thaw very quickly. I place them in my armpit (with my winter coat on, so they don't cool my body temperature, I can't feel them through the down!) and it only takes a few minutes for them to thaw out.

    I keep a personal alarm. I don't want to use spray ,it takes time, I may be affected.I want to keep my windows closed from danger. When walking you just turn it on don't need To be close to your 🕺. A handful of change thrown at someone's face. The side of a coin can be used as a tool to mark a trail. Fire Extinguisher can be spray to make a fog screen . Shake up a can of soda. Pop that baby and it makes a mess on intruder, but want hurt you.

    Thank you so much for sharing your feedback!🙏😊 I think a personal all alarms great if you’re going to be around people, but I have another video where I was hiking and there was no one else around for miles. So personal alarm would’ve done nothing. The pepper spray gel is good because it’s not a spray but a gel and it’s much less likely to affect you because the direction you pointed it’s where it goes. I personally carry a multi tool with me every day so I think that is a great tool to mark trails, but also to use for other daily use and highly recommend a multi tool for everyone.🙏😊

Thank you so much I thank you for the thechie infor as I am lacking in that direction and love the infor on the chargers for laptos with multi uses... ] so ideas I might d for my comfort would be ...socks...I have a thing for keeping my feet comfy and warm, homemade beef jerky and dried fruits and nuts, small pad of paper/pen, old school address book with phone numbers incase memory wiped out, and a spare key box bolted to bottom car with combination to house spare key or fob for car if you got locked out. And a small amount of daily medications in a pill box if you are stuck away from home for a few days...
