    @@brianrobertson1211 I‘m surprised that buildings in the US (most of the times, not always) aren‘t gutted. This leads to a huge mess during demolition and you could separate for hours. There‘s so much you could recycle or dispose separately, and it would be best to remove it before starting with demolition (styrofoam, ventilation pipes, wood etc.) Not to mention asbestos and other harmful parts of the buiding. I guess that‘s because they only seem to care for the scrap metal they can resale, and dump the rest to a landfill. I know you can‘t compare the US to Europe, but that just amazes me how nobody seems to care about recycling and minimizing waste.

    @@peon9282 Asbestos is always removed before a building is demolished. And material is sorted out during or after demo when it's loaded out. A good demolition contractor will recycle up to 99 percent of the building. We don't just rip down and bury everything anymore. Tipping fees are too expensive and the EPA doesn't allow it.

    As stated the refrigerant is an issue not being recovered. I get paid for refrigerant, so I have a guy that recovers all ours and is either free, or makes me a little money. The lack of sorting as the building is being pieced down is a bid concerning also, I was watching a lot of copper scrap and metal in general being mixed in needlessly the whole time. it is harder to recover the material when its all down and tracked over then while in the process of taking it down.

  • @gliderider7077

    The other excavator with the bucket and the thumb is sorting the metal from the other debris and the skid steer is removing it to a metal pile - at 14:31 you can see the other excavator are loading a dump truck with metal, and there's some sort of sorting going on as there's a big pile in the bottom of what I believe is mostly aluminium. We had a demolition job near me a couple of years ago, and I asked the guys why they didn't sort the metal on site, and they said it would take too long to demolish the buildings that way, so they piled all the metal in one, big pile regardless what kind of metal it was, and let the scrap yard take care of the sorting, unless there were enough metal, lets say aluminium to fill a dump truck or two, then they would kinda sort it in its own pile, but only roughly, it was by no means pure aluminium - I think they called it dirty aluminium - and they got paid less, but in the end it was still a better deal for the demolition company - they didn't waste machine or man hours to earn a few extra bucks, they would actually lose money on it.

  • @kepplec

    @kepplec

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Bannimann2 I fully understand the process, it is what I do for a living... but with the amount of metal they have on site there, only picking the bar joists out is wasteful at best. The pan deck and ductwork and even more so the copper piping and extruded aluminum storefront I saw get buried is crazy. I saw them pick apart the AC unit to get the rad out of it. Unless the client is paying to get the job done in a crazy timeline, then not sorting as you bring the building down doesn't take any more time than if you pile it all up and then try to pick out the material. The only thing that will do it lose scrap(money) in the pile.

    Newer and shinier, probably larger. We live in a disposable society now. Stadiums are being torn down at 1/3 their useful life and being replaced with new shiny. Just like people toss out their 1.5 year old laptop because the new one has some new "innovation" in it. The new building will undoubtedly be bigger and shinier than the old one. The product and service will most likely be exactly the same.

    The saddest part is the refrigerant has value. I just had about a half dozen units done for 2 projects, and got paid for the refrigerant. if you work with a single source long enough and work out a deal it is almost a profit center and not a expense for the demo. R22 is very valuable for the older units that still run It since it is no longer produced from my understanding.
