We did learn some lessons from Vietnam. There was a bit more emphasis on hearts and minds and more advanced technology allowed for precision strikes that would result in far fewer civilian casualties than the unguided bombs in Vietnam. Weapons control and rules of engagement was also tighter than in Vietnam to minimize civilian losses. However, fundamental misunderstandings of the culture of the people who lived in Iraq and especially Afghanistan negated these efforts.

So what do you do when you're a SecDef with a quarter of a million in Raytheon stock in your portfolio? Make sure a withdrawal is conducted as prematurely and haphazardly as possible for one of two reasons: 1) A re-emergence of hostilities and human rights violations that gives us moral cause to return in the near future, or 2) Get the fuck out of there and start a new war somewhere else

@@Dee0336 Decent point. In a global system where governments rule by coercion and force, of course you can find a few examples where the people of governments worked together and did good/protected people from the authoritarianism of other governments. But in the years since the early 1900's and throughout the 20th century, the United States Government/CIA have conducted or been involved in 100+ regime changes/coup d'états which often were in support of right-wing authoritarian/nationalist regimes who benifited US strategic military or corporate interests. I wouldn't absolve the involvement in Germany, Japan, or South Korea from also being the result of such motivations, although the optics are obviously much better in those cases. My only point is the motivation is not simply to maintain democratic principles globally. Last I checked meddling in foreign elections is the antithesis of democracy. I'd say 8/10 times US intervention has done more harm than good, and in every instance picking one side as the 'good guys worth supporting' corrupts the local desires of the many different groups and worldviews of each country. Again, in a few cases the optics look great and it was very clear who the 'bad guys' were. But in most cases this doesn't hold up to scrutiny. There is a reason the only positive examples of foreign involvement are usually 50-70 years old and mere droplets in the sea of foreign meddling

I've argued since day one that the withdrawal should have been conducted from Bagram. It was a far more defensible position. Miles of open, level ground on three sides. A functional airstrip that can handle multiple civilian and military aircraft, enough billeting to accommodate over 10,000 people, medical facilities, dining facilities, etc. There is a several hundred yard buffer between the perimeter and the airfield. From a tactical perspective Kabul Airport was the worst choice. Its almost as if our government just wanted to get it over with so chose the spot they could move as many people out of as quickly as possible.

I made the decision not to shoot which I believe was the wrong one, LUCKILY as we turned my gunner was able to see in one of the very back windows that it was just full of people. So, I'm interpreting that this guy is suggesting that we never should have left Afghanistan? I think pulling out is a better option than continuing a war that has been going on for 20 years. Edit: aaaand I was right. Advocating for a "small" contingency of a few thousand US soldiers isn't pulling out of Afghanistan. If the military force that you trained for decades decided to up and bail right when the U.S. left, that's a pretty big sign that we're doing fuck all except helping out the corrupt politician and soldiers by just giving them a fat check and top of the line equipment

There's a planned and orderly draw down, and then there's what we did. They did not inform our allies, they gave up the military airfield before evacuating (which also removed air support for the forces still fighting), and then they gave out lists of our allies to the Taliban and asked them to please let them pass. You keep a contingency at least until you get all the civilians out, that should be basic.

@@kaleiohulee6693 sure, that was Obama's playbook. And then the US stayed another 12 years and sent billions more in equipment and troop surges. I don't think you appreciate the political forces that really wanted to stay there at all cost. They pushed two presidents who really wanted to withdraw to stay. They manipulated intel to make it appear things were going well if only they were given a bit more time, money and troops. Of course it never ends. There's always another excuse, another lie. In that context, just getting the fuck out is the only option.
