Autel EVO Full Review with Flight Test

7/21/18 update: New app and firmware released that fixes most issues. Way to go Autel for the prompt fixes!
Full Review of the new Autel Robotics EVO foldable drone that features 4 miles range and an excellent camera that can shoot up to 4k@60fps. In this review I mention issues I had previously with a crooked horizon while yawing on the beta firmware but in this review and in subsequent test flights since I've had zero issues so the one flight with a crooked horizon may have been some odd fluke.

    (((Update))) Thank you for the great videos, I just bought me an Evo Drone today and your video helped me make my final choice, I was so close to buying a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom and I’m glad I didn’t and without going into a list of reasons the easiest choice was remote has a built in video screen and my kit has four batteries and was $400 cheaper.

    Thank you for watching and I'm glad I could help. The EVO is also much better now than it was back in July when I made this video. They have improved the stability and fixed the gimbal issues. Just be sure to upgrade the firmware. Also, calibrate the gimbal after the firmware update. Gimbal calibration is new and wasn't possible at the time of this review.

    Yes, the video was kinda long (I ate a burger and dranked a beer while watching! LoL) but very comprehensive review brother and very thorough. Thanks for doing this review, as you know already, I'm considering buying one of these. (since Autel doesn't give away their products to small time reviewers, otherwise, I would have had one by now!!! hahaha!) The Dynamic Tracking is the best I've seen. Not even sure if you noticed that "you were perfectly centered" in frame as the bird tracked you... WOW! BTW, I had to send my XSP back to factory right after posting that last video. I decided to finally upgrade the firmware, portions of the upgrade failed, over & over again... I called them and they quickly arranged for me to ship it back so they can fix it, ALL FOR FREE!!! "I love Autel for their 5 STAR customer service. I didn't see any gimbal issues in your flight test of the EVO, so, I'm looking deep into my budget to get this bad boy! POW!!! -djsoulforce!

    Thanks for watching DJ! Yeah, I don't think anyone got review samples from Autel. The two that I know of that got them for free got them from vendors. I'm not sure what caused the gimbal issues on my first flight with the beta FW but it seems to have resolved itself. I've only heard of one person having the FW flash fail on the XSP. The newest XSP firmware makes the yaw not nearly as touchy so it will be butter smooth now. Autel's CS is the best in the biz! I hope you get an EVO too! Have a good day man!

    @@mrsrhardy The thing that bothers me most about DJI is they put an altitude limit on their drones. FAA says I can fly 400 ft. I'm going to fly 400 ft with my EVO. Which I received today. It needed no firmware updates and it's all I wanted it to be. Tilted horizon fixed on one of the previous updates and from what I'm seeing Autel has been stepping up to the plate with the needed firmware updates. I thought about the Mavic Air but again, I don't like being restricted with an altitude limit. Plus I didn't want the whole area thinking I was flying a nest of hornets around. What's up with that buzzing sound? It's so loud from the Mavic Air. Maybe DJI will jump right on that fix.

    Pointing your antennas out like that will give you the weakest signal. The signal radiates from the side, not from the tips. Imagine if you stuck the antenna through the hole of a doughnut. You'd want the meaty parts of the doughnut facing the drone, not the holes. Someone from autel actually recommended pointing them down instead since the phone cradle sits above. That way the tips are pointing more towards the ground, and the antennas sides are facing towards the drone.

I have tried to use it a couple of times when working for clients and each time they have refused the accept the footage because of the tilt issue. I called Autel about getting the beta firmware and they refused saying is the a "closed" beta firmware. I will wait a couple of more days and then return it to Best Buy for a refund. This drone will be eclipsed when the Mavic Pro 2 is released. What a shame.

    Emerslam yeah, I understand. As you can see in my footage the horizon is perfect. The tilt I experienced in the first flight on the beta FW seems to have been some oddball glitch. It has been perfect ever since. The beta firmware isn't perfect though. It suffers from very slight yaw snapback when yawing fast however most pilots likely won't even notice it. Hopefully they release the new gimbal fw soon.

    Patience is a virtue not to be ignored. Unless I am reading way too much into this. Which at my age seems to happen more and more often. Why would you use the EVO in a commercial setting knowing it needs firmware updates to resolve issues? Then turn around and say it will be eclipsed by an unknown product at this point. It seems as though you arent giving it a fair shake. No defense of Autel here. I am waiting for the firmware myself. The horizon tilt kills me at times. I too have asked and got the same reply. But I knew this going in with the initial release. So hang in there and I think you will be rewarded in the end. Especially when you will be able to fly wherever you want when you want based on your decisions not the company who makes your tools. Cheers.

  • @EsqChrio

    @EsqChrio

    Fair shake?? Did they not look at the video it took before they released it? I find it hard to believe they didn't, so I guess they decided to release it knowing there was a problem. What does that say about them? I didn't know about this problem when I bought it and used it, or I wouldn't have done it. I bought it to use to make money, not to casually fly around on a Saturday morning in some vacant field and then go home for the day. DJI will release the Mavic Pro 2 in a month or two and this drone will be forgotten by everyone except for the few diehards. To think otherwise is being naive. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. Plus, I've modified the software in my Mavic Pro to fly anywhere, including red zones, so NFZ restrictions are not an issue.

    I'm going to jump in here.. DJI vs Autel.. really? That is perhaps the biggest beat a dead horse fight out there. Arguing about it and especially comparing then is absolutely pointless. But, unfortunately for Autel it means damned if the do and damned if they don't. Anyone who was paying attention knows Autel told it's customers that Evo would go through the refining process even after release. And don't even get me started on horizon issues. There have only been a few drones that did not get plagued with that problem at some time. Be patient and keep it since things are getting resolved quickly(trust me I know).. Or return it and move on to the competition and their brand of headaches.. Up to you. But for all our sake just don't add to the battle drama. Nobody needs it.

  • @MrGoofee121

    @MrGoofee121

    6 жыл бұрын

    Okay, take a look at your P3P video from 2017. Do you notice the tilted Horizon? They fixed it correct? After it had already been released. Not arguing simply making a point. The issues with the EVO were known long before its release date were being worked on at the same time. So that is chalked up to lack of diligence. Those that got the EVO first knew this already and are simply waiting for the Firmware. I knew it and still bought it. Yes, Autel has a history of slow releases. Which I personally hope isn't the case this time. You need a product that you can rely on for business understandable. This alone doesn't mean all the rest are Naive or diehards. Maybe we just dont like Iphones or very very poor customer service (Apple/DJI) Before you ask have dealt with both. I didnt believe everything until I experienced it first hand. DJIs products, although sound and reliable, like an I-phone are given a black eye by their very own customer service. I digress. All this aside yes the EVO has issues. And to be honest they are minimal. They will be fixed with firmware as they arise. In the end it is all about money even for you. Cheers

    True Drone Reviews yes, I misread. Correct, you don't need to use the app. You can fly it with just the controller though you will not be able to use the smart features such as Dynamic Tracking or Waypoints.

    The screen on the transmitter is the very first thing that attracted me to the EVO as I travel a lot and being able to quickly stop somewhere and get in the air is fantastic!!

    @RDsRCReviews I've seen a few connecting issues happening with them, for SOME reason. I've got one that won't connect at all & one that connects like it's supposed to every time. Guess I'll fly the one that connects often & see what happens, it's like new & never been even nearly crashed. Got 7 good batteries. Just is strange tho
