Might be funny at the first sight. But the truth is that those people where offten multilingual. For example in our region was absolutely normal that all people spoke German, hungarian, slovak. If you speak slovak you understand 95% of czech and with a liitle bit of effort you easily learn serbocroat, polish, slovene or russian. I personaly speak 5 languages and its not a big deal here.

Most people had to learn German and many were multilingual. It was really not uncommon for someone to be able to speak German, Serbian, Hungarian and French for example. Especially the more educated Officer Staff would know at least 3 languages.

A lot of people forget how important the Austrio-Hungarian coastline was, we often think of the vast inland parts of the Empire and forget the seaports of Croatia and Dalmatia

Fun fact: even landlocked Czechoslovakia had a navy (river navy), it had few patrol boats, few gunboats and some minelayers, everything of it were from WW1 Austro-Hungarian navy. As Cezchoslovakia was a industrial superpower (in WW1 most of ships were build in todays Czech republic) , it even made small ships for export. It's biggest ship called Prsident Masaryk was one of the biggest and heaviest river ships ever build and because of that, Czechoslovakia became a Danube superpower (alongside with Yougoslavia, Hungary and Romania). It was also based on WW1 Austro-Hungarian Wels class monitor. It was captured by Germans and renamed Bechelaren. It's main objective was to protect river convoys in Yougoslavia against the partisans and it's biggest action was in Austria, where it fought with few Soviet gunboats, it sunk 2. After the war, it became a civil ship, as Warsaw pact decided, that only Soviet union will have river navy. In cold war, it was scrapped...

For anyone wondering: the first song playing in the background is "Unter der Admiralsflagge" by Julius Fucik and the second is "Unter dem Doppeladler Marsch" by Josef Franz Wagner. By the way if you're reading this M.Laser, I loved the video, but if it isn't too much trouble could you put the music you use in the description for those few people like myself? Too many people forget to do so, and I end up spending half an hour trying to find that one song that I can't get out of my head. Anyways, it's your channel so do what you want with it, just thought I'd ask.

The Radetzky class was an excellent example of late pre Dreadnought design. The Tegetthoffs were also very capable Dreadnoughts, apart from the one that was built at a shipyard that wasn't qualified enough and had no business building battleships.

Lol, all the people commenting that their great grandpa served in the navy back then. maybe all of us who had family members in the Austro-Hungarian Navy should make a meetup. xD

@@jurisprudens Easy: The Hungarians bring lunch, the Austrians desert, the Czech bring the beer, the Romanians bring the music and the Croatians organise a nice beach location. Everyone brings their own homemade spirits and the party is complete.

This is the most in depth video on the K.u.K Kriegsmarine i've ever seen! Thank you!

A third of it's personnel were Croats and many Czechs served as machinests.

Germans as gunners etc.. thats both interesting and hilarious

The Austrian Navy was actually surprisingly potent earlier in the German War against Italy and Prussia. Admiral Tegethoff (then not admiral yet), was a naval genius and one of the most skilled commanders of his time.

Austro-Hungarian navy went on patrol all over the world before WW1. They also had a marine detachment in stationed in Peking.

Something many KZread users should understand is that the guy who made this video probably had to read a couple of books in order to get the information he was later able to resume in a 9 minutes video. Great job, my friend! Keep going!

At 0:31, one small note: the Japanese navy was the 4th largest navy in the world, due to the six six Fleet concept.

It very rare to find a video that teaches you something completely new. I knew nothing about this. Awesome video :D

Finally! I have been waiting for a video like this to come out.. I think this topic is very underrated, even in my city Pula which was the main naval base for the whole navy.

Good to see k.u.k finally getting some mention... you could start with Tegethoff, and battle of Lissa, which was the beginning of the rise of the imperial navy, as well as of the episodes with sinking of Szent Istvan, and later, Viribus Unitis in Pula..which both act like a real, but also symbolic loss Greetings from Pula, once the Fleet base of the imperial navy :)

Admiral Horthy: Oh yeah, I can still remember

One of my favorite movies is based on a book by Maria von Trapp. She married Admiral von Trapp in 1939 or so. He had been very successful in WWI controlling Austrian subs and was wanted for the navy of the 3rd reich but instead escaped to Switzerland. The movie was called The Sound of Music.

It was a very interesting video, thank you for your research and time put to that viedo. That navy is interesting since there were also relevant historical people involved in the Austro-Hungarian navy, like Miklós Horthy and Georg Von Trapp. It would be interesting a video of the Ottoman navy in WW1 also.

Welp at least now I can say I was a sub when you were still small. Amazing video.

They had 4 and 1 got sunk, but whatever. It made no impact in the war at large by then. Even a succesful breaking of the Otranto blockade wouldnt have amounted to much.

@@patrikcath1025It wasnt bettr than the Italian navy. It had less modern dreadnoughts, and a significant portion of its light cruisers were greviusly outdated.

One more thing: Only hours after the Italians joined the war, some Austro-Hungarian ships were alredy bombarding Venice, while the Italian officers were sleeping.

I've always been fascinated by the Austria-Hungarian navy but learned a lot I didn't know here. Excellent.

Interesting but I wish this would be an introductory video and that you guys would delve into the topic more deeply, like explaining the ship classes, the battles fought as well as the officers and men that took part in them. Thanks.

There are so many parts to the World Wars that people are simply never taught about. Thank you for enlightening me on something I was totally ignorant of before. You earned a sub :)

@@nordic5628 can I comment on this, I honestly don't know I thought thier navy was basically non existent, but after seeing this video I thought that thier navy was strong enough to counter with Britain and maybe defeat them.

I was so surprised when i visited Franz Ferdinand museum in Artstetten castle, to find multiple rooms filled with pictures and ship models of the Austro-Hungarian navy. Before that i thought that they had only few small ships. Thank you for this video to let other people know that Austro-Hungaria had a real navy :D

Their naval power is overshadowed due to UK France Japan USA Russia Germany was main 6 and 5 were in allies which made central powers navy generally overshadowed because they couldn't do much

Be grateful he wasn't on the ship when we sunk it on November 30th, 1918. I'm sure your grandpa and most enlisted men were not, but the Austro-Hungarian naval officers were mostly a bunch of cowards. They never even sailed out of port during the war. In fact, the anchor of the Viribus Unitis is still kept in my city of Venice.

Captain Georg Ritter Von Trapp, of "The Sound of Music" fame, had been a captain in the Imperial Navy, which may have been its biggest PR victory.

I have the battleship SMS Viribus Unitis and destroyer sms tarta in world of warships! It’s good to see that Austrian warships are being added to the game. Normally their navy is overlooked.

My grandfather was on a U.S. sub chaser out of Grotton,Conn. during WW1. Toward the end of the war, his sub chasers were shipped to the Adriatic. At the end of the war, the A-H pre dreadnought Zrinyi surrendered to the Americans.(better than to the Italians) He spent the end of 1918 and most of 1919 aboard her.

Miklos Horthy, the finest admiral of the realm.

The Ganz Danubius naval yards in Fiume were perfectly capable of constructing state of the art vessels, what the empire lacked was docks of sufficient size for large tonnage battleships. This was remedied with floating docks during the war, but it was much too late by then.

@@gertvanderhorst2890 No, the Tegethoff class was built in landbased drydocs constructed specifically for the porpouse of building them. The floating drydocs were ordered from germany for the follow on ersatz monarch design, and the prospective battlecruiser and fast battleship studies.

As a Danube empire, this video needs to have info or at least mention for Danube river fleet. It was very formidable and first shots of WWI are shot from one of this ships to Belgrade. But great video

There were something like 40 riverine vessels of varius size in the KuK Kriegsmarines commission. Rather significant indeed.

A good series of books about the Austro-Hungarian navy is the Otto Prohaska historical fiction by John Biggins, staring with "A Sailor for Austria." It should also be noted that Herr von Trapp in the movie "The Sound of Music" was a famous Austro-Hungarian WW1 submarine captain in real life..

@@user-ri8wb5nc1q The real Capt. Von Trapp was actually a very successful submarine commander in the Austro-Hungarian navy during WWI. That's why, in the film Sound of Music, the Germans are intent on "recruiting" him for their navy; they presumably wanted to put him in command of a new U-boat.

interesting how inflation was in Austria-Hungary empire, before and until the end of WWI Approximately, converted to today's EUR value (05/2023), the Austro-Hungarian "Krone"(Crown) would be worth in today's Euros: 1 Kr. 1913 = € 5.65 in 2023. 1 Kr. 1914 = € 5.58 in 2023. 1 Kr. 1915 = € 4.15 in 2023. 1 Kr. 1916 = €3.33 in 2023. 1 Kr. 1917 = € 2.61 in 2023. 1 Kr. 1918/19. = € 1.12 in 2023. Newspapers cost 4 hellers (heller is 1/100 Kr, so it is 0.04 Kronen) in 1900, 12 hellers in January 1919 (3x) Tram ticket in Vienna: 1913 = 19 heller, 1918 = 40 heller. Btw, the first Kingdom SHS ("Yugoslavia") dinars were worth 4 Kr., about 4.5 EUR So, according to info in this video, the budget of the Austro-Hungarian Navy in 1900 was about 18 million Krone, i.e. about 144 million in Euros 2023 (approx). - Italian navy budget in 1900 was 90 million Kr, i.e. 720 millions € ( approx) - British navy budget 1900: 550 million Kr., i.e 4.5 billion € ( approx).

Austrian navy also had a dozen of Monitors, based on the US Civil war ships, regrouped under the "Danube Navy", which provided a great help to the Landwehr by patroling the rivers in ennemy territories, and protecting bridges while troops were crossing them. Once again, these Austro-Hungarian did it "exotic" ! ;)

Great video! Sorry to poit out, but I am sure that Italy has 3 drednought in active service in1914, 3 more will enter service by the end of the war, and was planning 4 superdrednought (only 1 built by 1919).

Italy had a total of 6 dreadnoughts to the AH 4 eventually I belive, but in 1914 some of them were under construction. Similarly the 4 Ersatz Monarchs only had their guns built.

I often wonder how WW1 would've turned out had Italy joined the Central Powers. I hadn't considered the naval aspect and while the Allies would've still had naval superiority it seems clear that they would've been stretched thin having to defend a much larger area. Had the Mediterranean become contested it would've been crippling.

Be interesting to compare the total naval budget to the miles of coast. They had coast, yes, but they could fight many a war without it being a factor, unlike Italy or England.

Think modern austria can build a Navy that can scale mountains? it'll be the weapon to surpass Metal Gear.

Ahead of their time too, along with the Russians they opted for three gun turrets on their dreadnoughts. The Americans would later adopt this in their standard battleships and the later modern WW2 battleships like the Iowa Class.

As im related to the Habsburgs i find thid very intresting. one thing of note because the Austrians didnt plan to have long distance operations fuel stores were smaller (on dreadnaughts at least) where they carried more guns and more ammunition. not sure why but we chose more guns of smaller calibur to put out more rounds on target vs having larger guns with less ammumition and longer reload. its very intresting
