I wish Paradox would have some kind of setting in their games that wouldn't make rerolling RNG so mandatory for certain things. Like if you're playing PvE as Hungary and go Hapsburg, just make the AI go along with your early focuses. At least the Austrian and Czechoslovak ones. EU4 is way worse for this though. So many runs don't even really start unless Poland goes Local Noble, France and England go to war, or Shah Rukh dies early.

One upgrade they could do in the hungarian focus tree could be making greater hungary an acutal thing (like a formable ) and not Just a name change, for example make It that if you controll croatia, Transilvania, banat and Vojvodina(the old hungarian Kingdom territories) you can core those

I think they should just have the ability to core former hungarian lands as you gain them with decisions with compliance requirements. Kaiserreich does this and it's the best implementation I could think of

1:14 I don't think of this tree as that old, but then I remember this tree is six years old and came out in Death or Dishonor, it's been around a long time. Anyway this isn't a What's The Point episode since Austria-Hungary clearly does have some points with achievements being the main one. I did also think about covering the historical path but the problem with that is that I don't have a good answer for improving it, even if it too is underwhelming.

Well, for the "historical" tree they could start by changing the proclaim greater hungary focus, so you could only do it if you control all your cores and claims, and by completing it you core all of them, or it unlocks reintegrate decisions. Also, the whole horty becoming the head of the arrow cross party is not even remotely what happened historically, this way you cant even simulate one of the most pivotal events of the war (for hungary), when horty tried to pull a romania and jump out of the war in 1944 but was caught by the ss and was forced to resign and put the arrow cross party in charge (which was forced underground decades before by horty, but slowly gained popularity and power with the growing german influence over horty and the government) but that would need a complete rework of that tree, so i dont expect it to happen any time soon.

Have you done a video on communist Balkan Federation as Bulgaria? It's similarly RNG infested towards the end. There's a solid chance one of your neighbours will simply refuse to flip ideologies to communism no matter how high their popularity is. Last time I had Turkey stay non-aligned despite having 100% communism popularity, and it pretty much killed the run. And that's why democratic balkan federation is subjectively better

the worst part is how reintegrating the empire gives you cores on bosnia but not galicia

Historically accurate tbh. The Habsburg Monarchy was willing to trade away the entirety of Galicia-Lodomeria to a resurgent Poland/Ukraine in exchange for their allegiance.

While ceding galicia wasn't entirely off the table given they were compensated well for it, galicia was one of the most loyal provinces of the empire and that shouldn't be overlooked. That, and such a trade never ended up happening. Bosnia, on the other hand, just look how that turned out for the archduke.

"One national group within the Dual Monarchy, the Poles, not only supported the Habsburg war effort, but actively and openly advocated Polish national unification as one of Austria-Hungary's war aims. Unique among the nationalities, they did so with the general consent and support of the Austrian government." (The Austro-Polish solution: diplomacy, politics, and state building in wartime Austria-Hungary 1914-1918.) The Viennese half of foreign diplomacy and wartime objectives within the First World War openly supported the annexation of a Congress Poland into Galicia-Lodomeria as an effective "Third Kingdom" within the Monarchy. In OTL the Austro-Hungarian military failures, combined with the works of individuals like Istvan Tisza, the Hungarian Prime Minister, openly opposed and eventually got their wish in that Poland was not to have any part of Galicia, nor be a Habsburg crown. HOWEVER, I do see your point about Polish loyalty to the Austrians, and therefore I rescind my former comment, Galicia ought to be an A-H Core. As for the Bosnian core, I think it's justified, Bosniak infantry were quite common throughout the KuK army. One website claims that at it's highest point, "298,773" bosnian soldiers were present in the Habsburg army. However I don't really trust the source so take it with a grain of salt. (5 Bosniaks in wwi: Loyal, Obedient, Different)

That's why Austria should get a focus tree with a different approach.

What Hungary needs: - Manpower focuses, come on, even the generic focus have it. - Replace the RNG with Czechoslovakia with something else, for example Monarchist Uprising like Poland can, maybe a flavor like doing something with the Slovaks - Ditto with Yugoslavia and maybe Romania - Option for Hungary (and Austria) to do what Poland can do to them and put a Habsburg in charge, and maybe later join both countries together. - War Goal Focuses, not claims.

You can make 1 infantry division in division designer and then create a huge number of them. After that, AI usually submits into annexation by player.

I feel like its completely random. I made 2 Runs as Asutria Hingary lately in the first i did everything, improve relation, the railway focus, non Agression, Diplomatic Pressure and they just sad no and Germany annexed them because i couldnt atack because of the nok agression pact. In the 2nd Run i did nothing and just prepared to atack them. The accepted to be inhegrated. I had nearly the same amount of troops in both runs.

You forgot being unable to move the damn capital to Vienna. Like it's literally one stupid decision many other nations have, they could have included it in six years. I understand as a game mechanic it doesn't DO much, but location-wise Vienna is a much better capital for supplies & defence.

I think the devs stated that the capital remains in Budapest because this is more so a *Hungarian* Austria-Hungary rather than an *Austrian* Austria-Hungary. Would make no sense for the capital to go back to Vienna when the Hungarians are now the ones with power.

Also Otto von Habsburg should have the ability to "united Europe aka form EU" it was a supporter of Paneuropa. If fascist UK can because of Mosley, then also not aligned Austria-Hungary should be able.

Just use Hungarian Flavor if you really want to play as Hungary. Much better, bugger and more historically accurate.

To be fair, there are a lot of videos on YT on how this particular event RNG works and how you can tip the odds to 90 per cent in favour of CZ accepting

Maybe there should be some kind of requirements like in Anschluss to increase the odds/remove the rng.

Wait, it's only 10% to get Czechoslovakia to join you? In that case I have gotten pretty damn lucky, because I have done this path in vanilla 4 times and all of which resuted in me annexing them. That's 0.01%. Turns out it is actually 20%, but it was previously 10%, this means that I can't really calculate the correct chances.

Czech saying yes is base 20% and Dominion is 40, both can modified to be higher. So it's been changed from when I learnt the odds.

The ai's guaranteed Czech integration is really interesting. It means you can release yourself as a different country before the focus ends to guarantee the big A-H. You then reconqer A-H and release yourself as them to continue.

You dont even get cores on all of Austria-Hungary

Ideally for fun alternate history paths they could give you three paths: 1. Join Germany whether fascist or monarchist. 2. Oppose Germany and try to restore the now ancient Habsburg claims on Germany and bring back the HRE. 3. Instead of the HRE you could form a Habsburg GroßDeutschland. From there you could maybe focus on the Soviets or the west and try to reclaim more Habsburg claims like on Spain and the Benelux.

you can by recruiting a fascist demagogue to turn fascist before asking for Transylvania so you can join the Axis and ask Germany to give you all of Transylvania,. Later when they ask for the Sudetenland, refusing will kick you out of the Axis but slow the speed of the game and then ask to join again, Germany will accept you back in the faction

You've got some mistakes in there. Save scumming does not work. Results of each decision and focus are decided at the beginning of the game. And concerning Czechoslovakia, there is one more hidden modifier which increases the odds - completing Reintegrate the railroads focus. That being said I agree, that RNG factor is exceptionally frustrating, especially when you want to get some achievement and have to restart on failure at certain points, that can be even several years into the game.

Completely wrong, your conflating the seed that right opposition coup uses which is hardcoded with every rng event. (Most of them don't use the seed) Savescumming still works, literally just did it right now with Austria Hungary, Also 1:14. I know reintegrate the railroads exist bruh.

Whole hungarian focus tree needs an rework to even be a match for such well developed modern focus trees like bulgarian or turkish.

There needs to be a third response if Czechoslavia is a puppet to join axis instead. Sure, players could just leave, but you generally benefit more early. Could apply a malus that prevents leaving factions until 42 or a set number of years like the spanish civil war to force players to stay in.

Hungary's Austria-Hungary focus tree has a lot of problems and you have listed them all, but it's still a fun experience to play Austria-Hungary, a much better one than playing some minor. A little bit of safe scumming and everything is all right. I would love to get a rework, but to be honest it would be more interesting to me to get an Austria-Hungary focus tree for Austria.

Never forget get a non-aggression pact with germany for protect sudetanland.

As much as I love HOI4, there's no point denying that pretty much *all* pre-NSB focus trees are very bare-bones. The fact that mods can make better trees is just sad.

I'd honestly put the line at Pre-LR. Netherlands and Mexico have good focus trees for MtG but the US, UK, all WtT, DoD, and TfV trees need a rework.

Honestly there should probably be a special event or something if both countries go Habsburg. It would make sense given that they would both be the same dynasty, and Poland and Hungary have historically had very good relations. Maybe something like the player getting the other country as the special "personal union" puppets that poland gets, or just the option to invite them to a faction or something. It would be a really neat interaction

I've been trying to do the AH achievements for weeks now. It's absolute cancer. None of the giudes I watch work properly if at all. My most successful run so far I've had to take bits and pieces from different guides to make a cluster fuck of a path for myself to get where I need to go but even that doesn't work sometimes. And it's the little things that screw me over. 9 times out of 10 an agent gets captured in the most inconvenient time (this happens way more often than it should) which fucks up the sudetenland cheese cause it always happens few months before Germany does sudetenland

Anytime I play Austria Hungary I have to manually force the Czechs to agree to be annexed because they will say no every time. I haven't had them say yes once naturally for years.

i think theris good mod that adding national spirit that debuff the country (can be removed via focustree), but in time it wasnt remove its guarantte for annexation for froming austria-hungary. i forgot the name of the mod

played AH recently and did that focus while Germany was doing Sudetenland. smh they still kept refusing no matter how many times I reloaded. now another time when I missed Sudetenland and did it after, they accepted right away. maybe those level 7 forts give them confidence? historical focuses btw. maybe I should play it on ahistorical?

reloading doesnt change the ai response, i dont know exactly how it works but the game generates a unique seed at the start of each save file that determines the response to each event, meaning no matter how many times you reload it wont change

It`s not that Hoi4 players like monarchist trees. Rather PDX realised that Austria-Hungary was a hit, and leaned into making all monarchist trees since pretty overpowered. If they made the other branches equally superior, problem solved

I mean tbh I think the tree is still good, sure there is rng but it doesn't lock you out, if the Czechs say no you can still go after them if you really want to like how on non hist the allies can deny Sudetenland or abandon the Czechs but the Czechs refuse it, and Poland's tree also does have RNG too, if anything it is a bit less balanced as I feel focuses which affect other countries by forcing lower stability or support for a foreign ideology to be unfun to play against

I think the biggest issue with Austria-Hungary overall is when Germany is able to form it. Even if one of the three nations is a puppet, they get to say yes and eliminate all the work you spent puppeting them. This is indeed a major bug, since puppets shouldn't have the ability to say yes to something without your permission or be given the decision at all.

Could you potentially use diplomatic pressure to increase the chance czechoslovakia accepting union?

Tried it, no bueno, pure rng fest requiring a restart if it fails. Edit - apparently you can savescum with a different outcome, the trick is you have to backup a savefile BEFORE you start the relevant focus, the outcome is decided when you start it, not when it ends

All the devs have to do to fix Austria Hungary is implement the personal union mechanics they brought it for Poland and Lithuania. It would largely solve all of the issues. People can say it's "OP", but it's not like the game is balanced in the first place.

Neither Poland-Lithuania nor Austria-Hungary are/would be OP. Both Austria and Hungary are worthless and the boost comes mostly from Czechoslovakia and rapid expansion, while Poland-Lithuania in base borders is essentially just Poland with a few more factories, its main strengh comes from added cores and being able to push into the Soviet Union comfortably, while gaining manpower when Soviets lose it (and Poland can get core defense and attack early of course). In actual runs Poland-Lithuania and Austria-Hungary are strong because Germany carries AH with its ridiculous buffs and PLC becuase assuming it forms it means that it lives and probably aligned Germany one way or another, so Soviets are in for a bad time

theres an easy way to get czecholsovakia. use spies to see what germany is doing and save up that ahead ten days on a focus so that when germany does "sudentland" you can get czech popup first, wait until germany finishes and pause. the czech ai now has two desicions, now click the button that annexs czechoslovakia on the popup you got and germany cant get sudentland

They recently changed it so germany still gets a wargoal on you, even if you do what you described. you have to also apply diplomatic pressure and sign a non aggression pact at the same time, otherwise they'll just declare war on you straight away

As i just finish a run as communist hungry ( did a stream no less than 1hrs ago), most of it just trying to figure how to bypass the god awful guarantee by the french and romania.

You can increase your chances to be above 90% with both demanding a referendum (simply getting the focus called reintegrate the railroads and improving relations with austria) and protecting czeckoslovakia (improve relations, and make sure that germany is doing the focus demand sudetenland and world tension is higher than 20%), and claiming transilvania will much likely result in getting northern transilvania if u get germany as a mediator, giving you crucial supply hubs
