I miss the extreme engineering focus and complete lack of any marketing techniques whatsoever. One of the German ones I watched was hilariously sexist. You can tell the "marketing team" was just some engineers with a camera.

Once a merc arrived in my shop, only the cabin was there. Cops say he slammed into a fiat punto going the oposite way whilst he was going 260 km/h, then bounced and stopped at a concreete barier. The driver is still alive to this day, healthyer then me lol although he did break both his arms, a leg and his neck due to the force of the impact. The punto was sheet metal

I own a 1986 420SEL, and I have to admit; I'd marry it if it were legal. Amazing car. Solid, sturdy, and fast. Mercedes has never disappointed when it comes to safety. This commercial gave me chills, knowing that my car is there to take care of me. Thanks for posting this; its a real gem to watch.

You could have interco%^se with it at the rear with the exhaust pipes- also there are two orifices for the exhaust-hence why I would fantasise about marriage to my BMW. On a more serious note, I remember that commercial, but I was a little young to fully totally understand what the significance of such safety engineering entailed, and at the time an average Nissan pulsar or a Holden Astra- there wouldn't be any survivors at all, chilling stuff ....

Know that as time passes, newer cars that come out get stronger and safer generally. And the metal in old cars deteriorates slowly. Even a Mercedes s class from such a long time back wont be as strong as a common modern car.

I am a mechanic and work on my own cars only now. The 80’s German cars - mercedes and Bmw- were the best built cars of all time. If I’m going to hit anything going at 100km I want to be in a Mercedes s class 1982-1988.

This was a staggering TV ad back in the 80's. Very few car manufacturers would talk about genuine safety. This was Mercedes Benz laying down the gauntlet to anyone who dared to question their engineering standards and price. Still a chilling 60 seconds of marketing genius.

@@Orcawhale1 in Australia it was something that had never been advertised before. A real world crash story rather than a car being tossed of a building. It humanised the selling points and Benz sold plenty of S class thereafter.

And when people say its stupid to pay that much for a car but when u get in a crash it saves your life..

It has happened without fail every single time I go back to this video. Everything is set up properly in this advertisement. Mercedes did not need to overexplain or try and falsify anything. They took a real scenario and showed it to the public eye. There's a reason this car would become the dominant taxi cab and police car for most of the western world during the late twentieth century. This is all without touching the astonishing mileage count these cars can achieve in their lives.

@@Mabeylater293 The average milage on these Mercedes at the end of their life cycle was vastly higher then the on Corollas of the same generation in Scandinavia. But somehow your stupidity is repeated every day in comment sections all over KZread. I'ts like a religious dogma, repeated over and over, by of course halfwits.

My mother had a frontal accident with a van in the mid 90's, she was driving my father's green e-class (break) wich was brand new at the time. My mother was shocked but had no physical injuries. The driver of the van was heavily injured, his head was bleeding but luckily he did not die. Both car were wrecked but it doesn't matter. To this date, my mom is still telling the story she shares with Mercedes-Benz, with emotion. You can see she's grateful to the brand. I was born two years later.

The new ones are cheap and nasty inside and most models aren't even made in Germany anymore and have lots of annoying electrical gremlins. Not as reliable as the older ones and certainly arent as well built. The paint is full of orange peel. They are so much cheaper to buy aswell now. You have no idea how they have sold themselves out. There's a new Mercedes Benz on every street corner. Lol total sell outs and lost their cachet.

Absolutely. One of the best Mercedes I ever owned gave its life to save my former wife. Little 1983 240D was torn all to hell. She had a little seat belt rash across her chest, and her shoulder bothered her for a couple of weeks. Otherwise, she was fine. They don't make 'em like they used to!!!

This ad is about safety, I'm sure Mercedes cars that you call disposable crap are even safer today. I Know what I would rather drive, a modern one. Also the reason things are not built as sturdy as they once were is car makers crash teams realised, its not about how tough you make something as that can have a negative effect in a crash but how absorbent you can make a car. Hence light thinner materials etc.

@@somedudedelespagne very true, I had an S320. Beautifully appointed, but many technological advances in the W220 that now are presenting as expen$ive repairs. It's the ONLY reason I parted with mine, climate control and air suspension both presenting at the same time, quotes cost prohibitive at the time. It was a lovely, comfortable, quiet machine with definite road presence 👍👍

@@litamtondy I'd honestly bet if a new Skoda Fabia and a W126 had a head on collision the occupants of the Fabia would probably be worse off. The momentum alone behind the W126 would stop the Fabia dead in its tracks if not instantly force it backwards, and it's that which no amount of structural rigidity can overcome.

I remember this ad. It's about 90% of the reason my Dad bought one. Incredibly effective ! There's many modern cars that can't pass the offset impact test in 2021 !

it's all true... i have seen this car with my own eyes at a MB dealer at Geelong near Melbourne.... MB put it on a tray truck and sent it around dealerships to show how good their cars were at surviving crashes... so although it's an ad, it's also real life.

I remember this. More effective than any gov't sponsored ad I've seen anywhere.

Not possible. This is a 420SEL, which didn't become available until 1986. Ghostbusters was released in November 1984 in Australia.

Was at a Mercedes-Benz garage in Taunton (near Exeter, UK) not too long ago, and the guy showing me and my dad around the new S500 described it as 'paranoid' due to all its safety mechanisms, and showed us this video. I agree with others on here - the difference between surviving a pile-up and being killed in one is, in effect, owning one of these 'Sonderklasse' cars, or not owning one.

Very good ad! Rarely car-makers show what their cars are capable of doing. More even rare is to see some company risk its image by showing how safe their cars can be, like that commercial from Citroën with Claudia Schiffer and now this ad. *thumbs up to Mercedes*

I would not settle for anything less personally.I almost bought a used A OR B CLASS to replace a 2010 Nissan but could not find any for similar money to Kia Picantos or Holden Sparks second hand.I wanted a C Class similar to my moms but the worry of mileage and service costs put me off.I ultimately went with a Holden Spark after much looking around(2017 model).

I drive a 2008 Mazda 3 these days.I really wanted a Mercedes Benz though but missed out not through lack of trying.There was a really nice elderly one owner at the time c180 2003 or 2004 model that with haggling I could have had.

I bought an ‘87 560SL with the idea of having a car that will last me the rest of my life. (I’m now 59, I’ve had it for 8 years.) I hadn’t thought much about how the car could protect me in an accident. Seems it could make the rest of my life longer too.

Best cars in the world 80s s classes still save lives today.

We have a Germany imported (generally are made in Thailand for Malaysia) Benz that is 20+ yr old, washed it few days ago and still looks brand new 🔥

When I was younger I thought mercs were old peoples cars, but once you have one and everything just works how i should it's hard to go back. On my second C class now, and it's the perfect road car.

been in a similar situation 7 years ago our family had a w210 mercedes e class and we were going on q summer holiday to greece, driver on the other lane fell asleep at the wheel and hit my family at ~150 km/h. we all got out of the car with only minor injuries, thank you mercedes

Pretty damn safe car. I KNOW from first-hand experience that you can roll this car over a few times down a hillside, and the roof and cabin will hold up with very little damage. 300SD. That was a long night... but i'd consider getting another one eventually

Sadly these days car makers put gimmicks and gadgets before any engineering of real substance! Thanks for posting this video to remind us of the changing world.

@Mcmerc01 I don't doubt that. But I'd consider 1998-2006 to be the dark years. I worked for MB as a mechanic for 12 years and was there through the end of the good cars and at the beginning of the bad ones. When the W210 replaced the W124 E-Class, I knew MB wasn't MB any longer. And today's rule of thumb between us MB techs of days gone by is that a Merc with torx fasteners isn't a true Merc.

Mercedes made an updated version of this commercial for the US a few years ago. The safety features in these cars are impressive.

That was an awesome ad !! glad everyone is ok from 0:34 when he starts explaining what happened in split seconds was cool too.

Around the same vintage as this ad, I once saw the aftermath of a similar head-on collision between a Mercedes and a Volvo. The Mercedes looked like this. The Volvo had broken headlights. (to the facetious amongst you, I was a child, it was a very long time ago and no the Mercedes probably wasn't as badly damaged as this one. However it was considerably worse off than the Volvo and that's what I remember).

A tank only has paint damage after an accident, but the occupants in it are no longer doing so well, because they had to endure all the energy that was introduced into the vehicle by the accident. And that often ends fatally. Therefore, it is not a sign of quality if the car has only minor external damage. A car should absorb the energy by deforming itself in a targeted manner and thus protecting the occupant. That is simply the purpose of the crumple zone.

We need more adverts like this as there are some who people think they are immortal in their cars in 2021

Just look how they drive. As well as being the minority in a world of large SUVs and trucks.

I have a late model WRX, that i'll be selling to buy an 09' C63. My wife just inherited a 97' E230 ...twenty plus years old and it's such a joy to drive, practically indestructible and only ever had spanners on it for services. I spent last weekend washing, cut and polish now today restore the headlights and it looks absolutely mint and drives like a new car.

Since I was 4, I wanted a w126! I remember this ad as a kid. Haven't got a 126 but do have a W204 c280 and a w111 coupe. For those who mock benz, you wouldn't understand. It's a benz owners thing.

I remember this ad. I NEVER forgot it and currently own 2 W126 sedan's. A 1986 420SEL like the one in the ad and a 1987 300SEL. Solid, dependable cars , no other vehicle comes close to the quality of build, the safety features and the classic look.

@Fee Fee I’m guessing you’ve never owned a 204. A 126 would be a bucket of crap compared to my 111 coupe but that’s not true either. All benzes are great cars!!!

There was a similar ad in South Africa about a driver in a W123 who drove over a humongous cliff and survived with just a scratch. They used his accident in a very powerful ad, but refused to move him to the front of the line to get a replacement car. So he bought a BMW instead.

that is true and they were Pioneers of ABS.Years before any micro/light/small car had it even as an option.I cannot imagine driving a car without such features or without traction control or emergency brake districution.

There's nothing like a W126. Shame that Mercedes has become a shell of its former self today. Notice that in their latest commercials, they're clearly resting on their laurels (by showing LOTS of their previous cars) because they know the garbage they're pumping out today isn't anywhere near the quality of their older models.

our second car has always been a Mercedes.I drive a Little Holden myself as it is the car I use to get to and from work when not taking the bus and have things to do at the shops or the bank on the way home and sometimes weekly or twice weekly library visits.WE HAVE HAD TWO 280SE(W116 AND W126),450SE/450SEL(W116),W202 C200,W203 C180,380SEC C126 AND C107 450SLC in our home.If I had known anything about cars then like I do now I WOULD HAVE ACCEPTED EVEN A W124 260E as my first car all those years ago instead of going new car shopping then gone for sensible small cars elsewhere for work purposes later on.I lost money on my Mazdas when it came time to trade up but not severely lost eight grand on the 121 metro for a 323 astina and fourteen grand on the 323 astina when i defected to nissan for the tiida but my worse losses on depreciation were the Nissans with a nineteen grand depreciation curve within four years trading a tiida on a micra and a thirteen grand loss on my old micra for the little holden spark 2017 i drive these days.i had my cars from 1999-2002,2002-2006,2006-2010 and 2010-2018.

Besides, it is not a crash into a deformable still barrier, but against another car going peraphs at the same speed of the merc on an highway...this means that in a crash test the speed would be more than 64 km/h and you have to double it since another car was coming from the opposite side...it is incredible how the cabin is still intact and the family survived...I do not think today's cars are so safe...

The impact at 100kmph and not the tested 60kmph is 2.8 times the force..

They didn't mention the main security device: the Krupp cannon disguised under the bonnet (the Mercedes star is the aiming device). It is inconceivable for a German to design a tank without the cannon. Even if disguised as a car.

That's why I own two W126 (a 300SE and a 560SEL)

@@jjampong LOL a tin can car from a company that sold cars with exploding airbags for decades? Anyway, my 560SEL was in a serious accident last December (totaled) and I walked away without a scratch. My 300SE died from engine issues a few years before, so I sadly don't own a w126 anymore, just a W140. Anyway, if you want to crash a 3,000lb Corolla into a 4,200lb w126 with nearly 2 more feet of hood length, let me know how that works out for you.

@@jjampong I never said that, and it's a stupid comparison. 5 star ratings take into account many factors, including accident PREVENTION technology, such as lane assist, and automatic braking. NCAP tests are not solely about crash performance. And yes, if you crash a w126 into a modern Corolla, you're going to see quite a difference in crash performance. Physics doesn't care about lane assist when you're in a crash. A heavier vehicle with a longer crumple zone will just about always win. Feel free to examine the video, posted right here on KZread, where Mercedes crashed one of their Smart cars head on into a w140.

The W126 was a marvel of automotive engineering, but that was back in the 70s. What year is it now? Welded steel panels subjected to stress in and out everyday over a period of 40 years in will eventually lose its strength. Steel will eventually rust when exposed to salt and moisture. These will degrade the W126s stellar crash performance over time. How much of it is left in your W126? Will your airbag even deploy after 40 years? Would your seatbelt even hold? In a side impact, would you rather bang your head in an airbag instead of the W126s super strong B-pillars? 40 years is also an awfully long time in automotive safety. Steel can be made lighter but much stronger. Composite materials have been incorporated in the manufacturing of some modern cars. Airbags are there to deploy on every direction. Front structures are designed to protect you even in a 20% overlap crash unlike the W126. The safety of passengers are now taken into consideration. Also may I remind you that unless you have a deliberate intention to ram into anyone, you have no control over what type of crash you’re gonna be involved in. So yes, in the year 2021, I would still rather be in a corolla or a civic if I were to be involved in a crash.

I almost did that and was tempted to.Did consider Older W203 C CLASS Mercedes using the insurance payout after a truck wrote off my old car even with around 207000km on the clock.But the temptation of a 2008 BK Mazda 3 proved too hard to say no to and I wanted affordable upkeep from a car warehouse.

The exact same thing happened to a couple of friends of mine in the Uk, whilst travelling on the A47 the driver fell asleep & went head on with a lorry, both driver & passenger survived intact. Driver suffered a broken arm & passenger a few cuts & grazes. They were travelling in a 1999 S class & that car looked a lot worse than this one in the advert.

Engineers used to run the companies, with almost endless budgets to develop and build their very best. Lexus and Infiniti arrival in early 90s changed everything. Suddenly the German cars had to be cost-competitive with the Japanese makes, and lagging economic times meant the accountants cut costs of development and engineering. Marketing became more important and quality suffered, though it’s making a comeback for both makes.

Das tun sie aus meiner Sicht auch nicht. Die Botschaft scheint mir die zu sein: Im Straßenverkehr kann es zu Unfällen kommen. Davor sind auch unsere Autos nicht geschützt, aber wir versuchen das Mögliche, um die Insassen unserer Autos zu schützen. Für mich ist das der authentischste Werbespot, den ich je gesehen habe.

I wonder what happened to the driver of the other car that crashed into the Mercedes. In the 1980s, Mercedes were literally one of the safest cars you could buy in Australia (along with Volvo), but sadly, today, they can no longer claim this advantage as most new cars these days score very highly on safety ratings.

As far as i'm concerned, Mercedes-Benz continues to have the safety advantage over most other brands although in more recent times, their margin of advantage over others have decreased..which i observe is also the situation in other areas too like performance, quality or comfort etc. as nowadays being much more competitive market envirnoment with easier technology transfer paths & part access to the various

I have a 2008 Mazda that compares very favorably in terms of Safety with Most Mercedes in terms of safety.3 Stars which for it's day is good but off the pace compared to modern cars.Mine shares it's Platform with the Baby Volvo of the day though hence all these airbags and other goodies most of the rivals did not have existed.It's a 3 Maxx Sport Hatchback BK Series 2.Much safer driving that as opposed to being in my mothers Mercedes.It was a Prime Mover MB Truck that wrote off my 2017 Holden Spark leaving me intact but the car a total loss and write off(PAYOUT MONEY from insurance paid for the 3).

This video and these comments just give me heavy goosebumps. I think old merc's are not just cars. They are family members to us. I growed up in the backseat of a w124. I own a 190e 2.6 since im 17. I'm never going to sell it. I had some crashes in it (everytime not my fault) and it holds up incredibly well in comparison. Once a w202 C-Class rearended me. The c-class was nearly totaled. My 190 was fine. Not even hidden damage. And the headrest protected my neck. I didn't even had neck-pain the next few days. Never had Problems with it. I'm thinking about buying a S124 300Turbo diesel wagon for my future family planning. Could drive it with vegetable oil, haha. Im 22 now btw. Never wanted a new car.

Even though I don't particularly like Mercedes, this is awesome.

Hyundai Genesis achieved the first 5 star plus safety rating in auto history. Its nice that MB still build safe cars. My point is they no longer hold that mantle. Cars for a fraction of the price offer as much if not more.

This is a copy of an advert by MB South Africa in the 80s about a man called Christopher White who drove off Chapman's Peak in Cape Town and survived. BMW then responded about how their car wouldn't go off the road in the first place - advert titled "Beat the Bends" :)

What do you expect? The Mazda2 is a very small hatchback and there is no rear crumple zone on a hatchback (obviously). If it had been a sedan, I'm sure the damage wouldn't have been so extensive as the boot would help absorb the impact.

I was looking at a used 2 recently but am thinking providing my local Midas or Kmart can do the servicing I'll get a post update W203 C Class instead late 2004 to 2007 variant instead.I am impressed by the safety of them as my mom has had hers from new.SOMEONE prangs you unfortunately in the rear and damage is minimal,you can drive to the police station to report the incident and the panel beaters to lodge a claim usually same day and all is good,anything less such as that mentioned 2 amongst others in the class and it's off in the ambulance to the hospital for you.

I flipped 2000 w202 c180 two times with two cousins of mine inside of it, nothing happened to any of us.

We are proud Mercedes drivers our selves.

My mom drives one 2005 C180 which is safe and solid.I these days drive a 2008 Mazda 3 Maxx bought using money from an insurance payout with my now sadly written off thanks to a truck 2017 Holden Spark.Ideally I would have loved a Mercedes even if it was an earlier model but try find one for under $7000 that does not have astronomical miles for the age.

Long wheelbase version certainly helped too

Extremely elegant ad. Sadly I've seen one of these decaying on the nature strip, what I suspect is due to expensive repair required. Only one suburb away there was a late 80s BMW 750il in the same state of sitting.

In all fairness, safety is a given today which it wasn’t back then, and that’s why the commercial was so spectacular. Except maybe in Sweden, where safety had already been a basic requirement for a good decade when this aired.
