AUSTRALIAN CRAWL'S BILL MCDONOUGH: 'Sons of Beaches' Book Author

Музыка

Bill McDonough, along with his brother Guy McDonough, was a member of the iconic rock band Australian Crawl. Bill played drums and composed several of the band's most memorable hits including Downhearted and Shutdown. Bill has also worked as a record producer, jingle writer and music industry consultant.
This month Bill released a fascinating memoir Sons of Beaches, which not only chronicles the origins of the iconic band Australian Crawl, it also details the life of two intrepid brothers from the Mornington Peninsula who travelled far and wide in search of adventure.
Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips sat down with former Australian Crawl member and Sons of Beaches author Bill McDonough to chat about his life and the creation of the book.

Look forward to reading it. One thing I don't understand is why is Reyne so ashamed of their songs? I heard a bunch of podcasts with him and that seemed to be a common thread. People praising the songs and him acting like there's something wrong with the person for praising them.

Bill is such a great storyteller, always so interesting to listen to! Bill’s book “Sons of Beaches” is a captivating read, he and Guy had amazing adventures and such a strong bond. Best memoir I’ve read, could not put the book down! Loved it!!!

I loved it too, although parts of it were sad. Bill and Guy losing their dad to cancer when they were just boys (14 and 10 years old) and Guy's death in 1984 when he was just 28. I also couldn't help thinking: "James Reyne won't like this!" But I believe Bill needed to share his story for himself and his own peace of mind.

Bill’s book was so honest and raw. Incredibly sad as you mentioned that they lost their Dad when they were so little and the tragic death of Guy when he was so young. Guy seemed to be such an interesting soul with such incredible talent, such a huge loss… I’m sure James Reyne would not be too happy about certain details in the book. I think you are spot on with Bill needing to tell his side of the story, set the record straight and dispel some horrible rumours particularly about Guy.
