They stole it from Flanders and Swann's 1950s song 'Design for Living.' I suspect Brad Robinson's father James (who co-wrote several songs as well as being a judge) told them about it and they used it.

First concert I ever saw was Aussie Crawl. I was 14 underage at Caloundra Civic Centre with my friend, her older sister and my older cousin. Years later I met James Reyne at my children’s primary school at Chancellor Park Primary School Sippy Downs. I was just dropping my kids at school and he was playing his acoustic guitar and singing. I spoke too him briefly. He actually stopped and spoke with me and was very polite. I think all the mums there were pretty juiced up I’m just gonna say. It was pretty cool at the time. Was he living there? Did his kids go to my kids school? I don’t know to this day. I don’t see any other reason for him being there. Anyway I told him I was an Aussie Crawl fan and they were my first ever concert I went to. PS I got in a lot of trouble with my family from my teen incident because I was 14 and got up to mischief. My uncle was a bishop at the time and a church member dobbed me in. Anyway I had to confess to my father and I’m alive to tell the tale!

It's weird the comments are full of people lauding how great Australian society was in the 70's/80's even though this song is about how shallow Australian society was at that time. Short memories indeed.

I agree. I lived in Australia from 79 to 82. A great natural environment, but there was something off about young baby boomer Aussies and to a lesser extent their more subtle parents. However, the lines about Studio 54 and friends from LA might be a criticism of how shallow another society is.
