These birds are SPECTACULAR fliers. In a previous place I lived I used to watch them from a high level apartment and you would see very smooth co-ordinated flying from flocks of them. They would glide and turn together and around each other without much flapping. I once saw a pair of them flying a few meters overhead and one in the pair just did a barrel roll, kept flying straight next to its mate, but folded its wings a little and and turned 360 degrees without shifting the path of flight... just showing off to the mate I guess. On the ground they may look like sheep but in the air they are smooth as acrobats.

I love the Bin Chickens, here in South East Queensland there are a lot of them. I love seeing their huge nests made out of sticks. I have had one coming to check out my back yard recently as I feed other birds, I was a bit worried that he would bring his friends tho, so was glad when he did not come back!

I heard one of these for the 1st time in my life. Never thought they made any voices but what I thought I heard was a deep sounding duck quack out front and as I went outside to see what this noise was or duck to my surprise I had a bin chicken sitting on top of the side fence. One it was a surprise that this bird was even at my place as there's none around here and 2nd was the bird must have made that quack sound. See them all the time in the city and where there's shops etc but never hear them make any noises.
Happy 2024 and all the best to you and the birds!

There are sightings of these and the Straw Necked Ibis and Glossy Ibis in New Zealand . Individuals and flocks that have flown across the Tasman . The Glossy Ibis is the most common , there is a record of a breeding pair being seen. Amazing that they successfully cross a minimum of 1600 km of ocean

You should see them fly and you would not be surprised they managed a crossing. They are very good gliders on air currents. I once noticed that their beak acts as a kind of stabilizer when they do have to flap their wings... you get a kind of sin wave oscillation from the tip of the beak to the end of the bird, keeping the middle of moving on a straight line with relatively leisurely wing flaps. Overall, I guess very efficient flight.

Thats incredibly cool.... but if you could why wouldn't you?!? I'm just really interested in how quickly a lot of wild animals are domesticated themselves. It's almost like cooperation benefits both sides. And it wild animals can figure that out why can't we… :-)

I can't believe how many Australian birds have introduced themselves over the past century. I've got a cute but noisy little welcome swallow nesting above my caravan, so I read up on her, and it turns out they're Australians who invited themselves over about 50 years ago. Aussie citizenship does provide the right to live in NZ, so I guess she's allowed here (the welcome swallow is welcome here).

BIN CHICKEN! BIN CHICKEN BIN CHICKEN! 💖💖💖 There's so much hate out there for the poor bin chickens, and I was guilty of it myself for a while. But then I realised they've taken to plundering our bins and back yards because we've destroyed the habitats that they used to rely upon, and moved into our bins and back yards pretty much out of desperation. Now I feel really guilty for ever being angry at/about them, and much respect that they've managed to do so well in their new niche. I confess, I did snort/laugh at your description of doing a double take on seeing 'a sheep' casually lift up and fly off, especially with the "wait, WHAT was in that tiramisu, anyway?!" 🤣

The recent heavy rains have the Aussie Bin Chickens grazing every paddock and grass parkland at the moment. I too spotted a huge number of them grazing alongside a flock of sheep and also in local public parks. Better there than the usual for name sake, raiding a bin for scraps somewhere. Is "Bin chicken" a new social media era meme name for them like "trash pandas" (reddit name for raccoons started circa 2014) or is it older?
@johndavis7944

The name Bin Chicken has been around for a while. But became more popular with the heightened activity of bin raiding and thieving food from children. The media as always pushed the issue, covering stories of their bazaar behaviour.
The first time I crossed the ditch for a holiday in 'Stralya was when I was 19. I saw one of these and was somewhat frightened by its terrifying bald head that it was sticking in rubbish bins. I called it an Australian kiwi (since it has a long beak like our kiwi bird). It's the evil cousin of our kiwi. You won't catch a kiwi bird in NZ with such poor table manners.
Best wishes for a happy new year. I own two parrots and appreciate birds.

Ooh the ibises, why called bin chicken?
@BackyardBirdsofAustralia
5 ай бұрын
Apparently they're known for scavenging through bins in urban environments
The Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) alongside of their 'cousins' in the dark jackets, the Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis). Powerful flyers and it's wonderful to see them flying in their chevrons. Historically rare in urban areas, the Australian ibises, particularly the White and the Straw-necked, have become established in urban areas of the east coast in increasing numbers since the late 1970s. That said, however, in these same decades, there have been significant declines in populations of all of Australia's waterbirds, including the Australian ibis species. Causes are thought to include reductions in beneficial flooding, loss of habitat, and high mortality rates. Note that middle one: loss of habitat. If you've an interest in crime fiction, or crime real life, you'll have heard the saying: "follow the money" when tracking down the criminal. "Loss of habitat". The ones making that money from habitat destruction are Developers and, before they metastasis into that final form, Real Estate agents. It's important to devalue something that's been a natural, or indeed a public, good before you snatch it away from said public. Another old saying is apropos here: give a dog a bad name and hang him. It's important that Developers & their larval form (the Real Estate agents) devalue those things that they themselves can't make money on or from. The poor can't afford property, so they're demonised. This is doubly so regarding Australian First Nations people. If you're no longer allowed to shoot or poison them in actuality, do it with words. And the same is true of those pesky animals... living in (say) wetlands... wetlands that could become CANAL DEVELOPMENTS funneling money into the claws of the Developers and their cringing lackeys. Those lackeys aren't just Real Estate agents. They're city/county Councillors. They're journalists and legacy 'papers of record'. In Australia, all newspapers rely on advertising revenue. The single largest provider of that revenue are... Developers and Real Estate agents. So powerful are these entities within the Australian media, that by the 1980s, these commercial entities didn't just get editorial veto over unflattering stories, they were able to enter into our 'papers of record' complete works of financial fiction. But the other practice that was established was deliberately inserting demeaning and debasing language (again & again & again) when describing the Australian poor (inc. the unemployed), First Nations people (subjected to written poison) and Australia's natural wildlife (whenever it gets in the road of gross profits, or their presence might 'lower property values'). "Bin Chickens" is Real Estate spin for devaluing a national asset that isn't making the Real Estate agents immediately rich. Australia does have fetid creatures plaguing the nation, but I won't be co-opted by them or their poisonous language to devalue our unique, and disappearing, wonders.

The real estate/media association was (initially) from an ABC (Background Briefing) investigation in the early 2000s, which has since been ratified, and expanded upon, by further investigative reporting - inc. Michael West Media (excellent for 'following the money'). I studied environmental science in the early 80s and have been watching the messengers and the messages of the 'burn the habitat for profit' players ever since. It's been interesting, if somewhat disheartening, to hear the influence of the lobbyists (or, more properly, advertisers) within free-to-air radio in this time. The bolshie 'let's look after each other' vibe of the 80s is nowhere to be found now (Triple J, maybe). (that said) Thank you so much for a lovely year. Thank you for Fridays of innocent joy, a bit of zen & cheeky chancers! I hope the PhD has bobbled along at a surprisingly valiant pace. And a very happy new year - and lots more tiramisu - in 2024! 🎉 (And thank you *very* *much* for the creative triggers!) 😄
