I grew up hunting with my dad. He is an old school type of guy He just goes out on opening day and shoots whatever comes up, he is always happy with it and that's all that matters, Lots of good memories hunting with him, but this is the first year I'm working all year to get setup for hunting. Excited to see how it's going to pay off this fall and many years to follow. Thanks.

Just a big Thank You for graciously offering your years of experience and knowledge to help us become better, more successful hunters. This is especially true for guys/girls like me who are new to the sport (even at 72-years of age. I guess it’s never too old to learn to hunt deer, especially when you live in NW Wisconsin.). Your sincere passion for deer hunting and a unique character that offers your valuable advice for free is rare these days. Thank you for all you do for us, it is greatly appreciated (and maybe I’ll get my first buck this year thanks to you!.

Another thing about rubs, if you find a group of small young trees with a rub on one of them. You can see how the rack hit the other ones & it can help give a rough judgment of rack size.

I scouted 2 seasons in a row in ohio and what I found is majority of the deer that you find early August or September will not be in that area during bow season. so I'll scout early bow season and if I find an area I like ill hunt it but if not ill keep moving until the action starts picking up. Then ill go to my spots that I know ill see deer at.

Jeff question for you on the public land cams. You said you set them out this time of the year after map scouting then finding an area with adequate sign, the don’t check the cam again until you hunt it. Wouldn’t you want to check the cam(s) once before season to see what is there and see if you may have anything patterned?

Thanks for all the info Jeff. Being in Michigan I had to put in a food plot due to the no baiting rule that went into effect a couple years ago. I have a tini 1 1/2 acre lot in lower Genesee Co that has deer and I can legally hunt. I rototilled a 100'x60' plot by hand and removed the dead grass by hand, limed, fertilized and planted all in a week. I used the Northern Woods sweet brassica mix . At 56 it reminded me that I'm not 35 anymore and I'm moving slow this morning. I was happy to hear the thunderstorm roll though this morning at 0600 to water it. Thanks for this video that is putting me back to work explaining that I'm not done yet. Have a great day!

Hello Jeff! I am hunting public land this year for the first time that is 600 acres. This plot has multiple large ponds/small lakes, swamps, open timber and dense undergrowth. However, it is surrounded on all sides by either main roads or houses so I expect hunting pressure. My question is: What is the best natural early season food source? Should I try to target white oak flats in late September early October exclusively or is that too narrow of an approach?

I made the mistake of planting my buckwheat mid may instead of late may. It seems to not want to stay down well when rolled with cultipacker. Is this because it has gone to seed and is more resistant to laying down? First year trying your system and have gotten good germination anyway on spots planted over last 2 weekends, even some volunteer buckwheat to boot!

We recently sprayed, fertilized, and seeded our plots after planting buckwheat in early June. We got great germination in about 3.5 acres of newly cleared land from a forestry mulcher. Although the buckwheat germinated well, it appears to have been stunted with some yellowing of the leaves. Even though we dropped lime in early June, we're assuming the soil is still very acidic. We haven't had it tested yet in the new plots. We had a few locations with caged trees where the buckwheat took off and we think the deer ate any buckwheat that grew up. The stunted buckwheat we're guessing had to do with a lack of rain after germination, browse, and possibly the acidity of the soil. Hopefully we keep getting rain near the West Branch area and our fall plots come out better than we expect. Did anyone else have similar results with their buckwheat planting?

Dang, our corn in Northern MN tassled mid July. With zero moisture this year feeding deer will be a challenge, except for the native browse. Looks like your area is getting some timely refreshments this summer. My Switchgrass planted last spring hasn't grown much higher than it was last year. It's been stressed with no rain this summer, so I'm assuming the roots have been searching deep for moisture and the height will come next year? Is that a fair assumption?
