One of the best news Sounders in radio history. Shame they don't use these anymore.

It was MY favorite sounder of all time, and I'd have to say my second favorites (hard to choose) were NBC Radio News (1975-85) and ABC Contemporary.

My other favorites were NBC's original News on the Hour Wah-wah-wah sounder and CBS's 1968-early '80s one.
"Zeppo is the only one of the famous Marx Brothers comedy team still alive." Until 2 years later in 1979 where he would also die making him the last of all the Marx Brothers. RIP to all.

Gummo died in April that year and Groucho who was in bad health that point was NEVER informed about his passing, because the family was afraid it would be TOO devastating for Groucho...

@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 I always forget about Gummo probably because he never acted with them since he left for WW1 at that time.
I remember watching a marathon of Marx Brothers movies on TV the weekend after this happened. It was my first exposure to them...40 plus years later, they still make me laugh. Thanks for the UL.
I got my American Information Network soundie fix with the Bob Grant Show on WMCA. Bumping up to the 10AM news was Howard Cossell's 5 minute slot using the same soundie, and the 11AM news played the longest version of this soundie. Can't believe I'm talking about 50 years ago.
I was on this earth for less than one month before Groucho passed and it sounds weird, but I feel a sense of comfort in knowing that.
Hard to believe just three days after Elvis. That was a bad time for celebrities.

Yes it was. Marc Bolan (T Rex) would die in September, two guys from Lynyrd Skynyrd (Ronnie Van Zant being one, I forget the other) in October, and Bing Crosby sometime in the autumn of '77.

I may have known that at one time, but forgot. I looked it up at Wikipedia, and Mr. Chaplin did indeed die on Christmas. though it would not happen for another 18 years, Dean Martin died on Christmas 1995.

Perhaps the untimely death of Elvis is what caused the passing of Groucho Marx...
What a incredible comedian he and his brothers were
That was a sad day. I’d gone camping for the weekend, but there was torrential rain the whole time, and I just stayed in my 1969 LTD. Thanks for this.
1977- what a year for legends to leave us. We lost Groucho 3 days after the death of Elvis Presley…. And the legendary Bing Crosby died on October 14th.

In-between Elvis/Groucho and Bing, the UK lost T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan in September.
*"Of course in Alabama, the Tuscaloosa."* *Brilliant.*
Groucho died just three days after Elvis. I remember the name Dan Streeter (hope I spelled it right). Also, the closing words were a little different here. In prior years, the announcer would say "throughout the day" after "Hear news of the hour, on the hour", but here he says "around the clock". Still had the same kick-ass opening and closing sounders, though.

Spelling I think is right on his name. Yes, ABC kept using the original 1968 music package for the four newscasts (Information, Contemporary, Entertainment, FM) into 78, but they changed everything before the year was over based on the stuff I've come across.

You're exactly right. In August of '78 I heard different theme music for Information. However, in '79, on an Information sports report, they used the original music. I'm so glad there are others who enjoy listening to those news themes. I also liked Contemporary (which somebody said used a Moog synthesizer to make) and NBC Radio's theme from 75-85. Another was NBC's (radio) theme from the very early '70s.

One other thing, Information's sounders put me in mind of a college marching band. Wouldn't THAT be one helluva fight song. If some college or university did that, they'd probably be my favorite on that basis alone, and I might consider going there!

It wouldn't surprise me if the change was meant to coincide with the whole overhaul ABC News did on TV as well which was in July 78 with the debut of "World News Tonight" though the familiar four-note ABC News theme for that didn't make its way into radio for a while after that at least. The whole standardizing of things kind of eventually took away the distinct identity of the different radio divisions.

Yeah, I seem to remember the TV news theme changing around that time myself. I first heard the Information theme in 1968 at the age of 5. Getting along in years, that's for sure!
Also, I enjoyed seeing the emblem for the Information Radio network.
Weird to think Groucho was on Dick Cavett in like 1970 and was as sharp as a tack! True legend!

I remember hearing the "sounder" on the radio at my aunt's house in Wisconsin but not sure what station she was listening to it on. The station my mom listened to was a CBS affiliate.
Here in Seattle after the news was over, they say this on KOMO 1000, “from Vancouver to Vancouver and from the Olympics to the Cascades this is KOMO Seattle Radio 1000!”
Hello--Nice to visit your channel again. I enjoy the rare sports items you've found and are conserving on your site. I was wondering if I can have permission to share in an upload I would do on my channel this audio? I have other recordings I've uploaded on my channel about Groucho's death and I think this would make a good fit for folks who visit my channel as well. I would credit you and your channel in the description as the source of this audio. Looking forward to hearing from you and keep up the good work!

Too young to remember this
The 2 spokesmen reporting on the death's last names were "Bomb" and "shell" - RIP GM.
I seem to remember at least one TV news anchor - Beverly Byer of then-WIIC Channel 11 in Pittsburgh (now WPXI) reported on his condition in a way that may well have been written by him if we didn't know any better - "Groucho Marx's condition has taken a turn for the worse - in fact, he died."
He died on my 667th day on this planet...

nobodys is funnier than groucho.
Of course, it wouldn’t be until when I was just about halfway through my college education during my respective experiences growing up, that a famous musician’s passing would easily overshadow that of another notable celebrity. Of course, I’m referring to Michael Jackson’s in the case of the former, for Farrah Fawcett’s in the case of the latter!
