Groucho disturbed by crazy eyed guest - Rare clip from You Bet Your Life (May 12, 1955)

Комедия

Probably the funniest interview Groucho ever did, with Groucho finding a perfect foil in the crazy-eyed Albert Hall. Groucho spends most of the interview pretending to be scared for his life. Absolutely classic-- I can rewatch this one endlessly.

Oh my I hate to break it to y’all but this time was maybe a little nicer for you then let’s say anyone who’s not like a white man. I’m sure everyone’s gonna act like I’m exaggerating or whatever but I mean is it really even possible to dispute what African Americans were going through in America at this time? I mean the videos still exist I honestly think it’s a little bit ridiculous how many people can watch videos like this, where outside the studio there were probably segregated bathrooms and drinking fountains, and that makes you LONG for this time? I get in your mind those aren’t the parts you’re longing for because that wasn’t part of your experience growing up, but that’s exactly my point. This was like DECADES before the last recorded lynching, this was around the time those black students were trying to go to school, and on either side of the road they’re walking on are a MOB of white people holding racist signs and saying they shouldn’t be allowed in the same school. For fucks sake watch Frankie Lyman singing “little bitty pretty one” on the beach nut show or whatever it was called. Practically the ENTIRE audience of white women are visibly DISGUSTED, at this little dark boy singing a song on national TV, they’re laughing and snickering and sneering it’s VILE, and then with what ended up happening to Frankie and COUNTLESS other entertainers at the time. I mean people like Judy garland were nothing but abused and had their lives absolutely ruined by these studios, the shit girls like her, Marilyn Monroe etc had to face is just imaginable as a man. I know I can’t picture myself having to deal with not being cast in movies or being overworked and treated like shit Bc I didn’t sleep with a director. And you’d have to be aggressively naive to think that didn’t happen every day back then, it happens NOW even with how much things have changed for women.

If you watch the full episode of this, you get the distinct impression that Mr Albert Hall, despite his odd mannerisms and speech delivery, is a very nice man indeed. He's very polite and appreciative of his fellow guest, Mrs June French, who despite being just 21 and an office 'gofer', is intelligent and is the one with all answers, and she wins them the game. Incidentally, Albert passed away in August 1964, in California, and was buried in Seatle, WA.

I don't think so, Grouchos reaction was more priceless, only it was Al generating the magic.

The greatest professor of my Baghdad university medical school years behaved very much like this gentleman. It was “Khalid Naji”. I remember finding him extremely strange on his first lecture in general surgery with us, but we soon got used to this strange style and he stopped coming across as strange after 2 or 3 of his great lectures

This is one of the rare times when Groucho had trouble keeping a straight face. He looked like he was going to burst out laughing a few times. Groucho's act is mostly keeping a straight face and making smart remarks, virtually never laughing or smiling himself.

And, it was awesome seeing Groucho like this. He's always entertaining and quick on his feet. Good to see him enjoying himself with this guy. I'm a huge fan. And, the guy reminded me of Huntz Hall. What a trip.
