I was watching this for a public speaking class and did a huge double take when I saw the Firefly cast picture. I would totally listen to a speech breaking down those glorious 14 episodes.

Firefly was cancel and didn't get enough views because Fox messed up the order of the episode. They didn't care about the show, so that's why they did that. It had nothing to with the audience, or bad audience analysis. If Fox released them in the right order, there would have been a lot more episodes and seasons. My dad has the entire series on DVD in the correct order that should be in, and he also has the movie as well.

Any chance you could put in accurate closed captioning (with periods and full sentences so I can show this to my students and have it be fully accessible)?

Thanks for your comment, Josh Castic Show! I assure you that 1/2 of the COMMpadres Media team is a rabid fan of Firefly and has watched the full series and follow-up movie multiple times. We were in no way poking fun at the show, which is absolutely brilliant. I agree that Fox is largely to blame for their short run. Airing the episodes out of order, poor understanding of how to market the show, having so little patience and pulling the plug so quickly...it was an unfortunate circumstance for an amazing series. The point of the mention in the video, though, was that it was never able to gain the audience it deserved and therefore most people would not be interested in a detailed examination or discussion of the show. (My family is Exhibit #1 for this fact. They get SO tired of me talking about Firefly...) A speaker must craft their message, the examples they use, visual aids presented, and all other aspects of their speech with the audience in mind. As such, one would need to consider whether a broad discussion about (or even a passing reference to) Firefly will connect with the audience and help them achieve the objectives of their speech. Sadly, in most cases it would not. I hope this puts your mind at ease about the Firefly reference. Please know that it was included with the greatest sense of affection.
