    Great video! I appreciate that you uploaded both videos--the first where you attempt to clean just by scraping and chemical bath, then the second video with walnut blasting. The difference is amazing. I really wish all of us DIY'ers could find a good DIY on effective carbon cleaning for the Secondary Air Injection Ports. This is a different carbon buildup area that is more difficult and expensive to clean completely. This issue affects FSI engines and the associated codes are P0491/P0492. I think the big worry is that water is blasted through the ports, and some water goes into the cylinders---getting that water out is NECESSARY. Also, the difficulty of removing the exhaust manifolds and cats. It's enough to make confident DIY'ers just go to the "stealership" to do. Let me know if you have any ideas on this.

    I very much appreciate your comment. It means a lot to me that somebody watched both videos and was able to compare the results. Honestly I have never thought of this before and never researched it. How often does this happen and what is the approximate mileage to have excessive carbon build-up in that area?

    Thanks! I doubt this has anything to do with your injectors. It hasn't happened to me but I've heard people blame the PCV system for such issues. The PCV is located in the V of the engine. Its role is to separate oil from the engine blow-by gasses. The oil separated returns into the crankcase and the filtered gas is reinjected into the air intake system to be reburnt. A malfonctionning PCV system will fail at filtering the oil from the mixt and cause oil to be returned into the chamber to burn thus the smoke.

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    I've seen videos online of people doing that. They scrape then pour a carbon cleaner solution, let it sit, then use the drill with wire brush. That thing is stubborn. It will take you longer to clean it. The recommended method however is walnut shell blasting and it's far easier and faster, if you have the appropriate tools of course.

    Hey Keli, i’m in the middle of doing this job right now. I don’t remember seeing you show how you cleaned the inside of the intake manifold or the intake runners. Did you just spray them a lot with your WD-40 degreaser and manually scrub them with a brush? I have seen people filling up the inside of the intake manifold fully with liquid cleaners and then power washing it. I’m a little afraid to do that. Also, my intake runners are particularly dirty (lots of built up carbon) and I don’t I have a good idea on how to clean them out. Thanks.

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    I did not clean them in this particular video because I did during the first failed attempt. But I showed how to proceed in the video below. I use a flathead screwdriver to scrub the inside. Good luck Jason! kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2Sbl6aqgtTXn9I.html

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    Spraying them with solutions won't do anything. Carbon bonds with the surfaces and needs to be scrapped, at least before being cleaned if need be. I wouldn't recommend doing anything to the upper intake manifold. Just scrub the lower intakes with a flat tool. Careful not to damage them.

  • @jasonpatterson7266

    @jasonpatterson7266

    Thanks. Yeah, I figured out how hard that stuff is to remove once I started!! Wow. I bought some stuff called purple power. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed using wire toothbrushes and a long rounded wire brush. I worked on each runner for about an hour. They look a lot better but are not totally clean by far. But it’s a huge improvement. I soaked the metal dividers in a combo of water, vinegar and break parts cleaner for a day and a half and it dissolved the carbon very well. I then scrubbed those with the wire brush and it came right off. I didn’t do anything to the intake manifold other than remove the 6 rubber gaskets and clean up that area to then insert the new rubber gaskets. Thanks for your help as always. I have some info about the oil filter housing gasket but I will type it on that video.

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @ThatAfricanGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    I appreciate. This is how these engines are built. The setup causes carbon to build up on the back side of the valves because the fuel injectors spray fuel directly inside the combustion chambers. This is why it is called Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). All GDI engines have this problem. The upside of this technology is fuel consumption is controlled and reduced. The downside is blow-by gasses from the combustion containing oil and contaminants find their way up to the back of the valves. Since fuel is not sprayed up there, coking occurs at the back of the valves and with time a thick layer is formed called carbon buildup. GDI engines must undergo carbon cleanup at some point, whatever you do.

    Yes, it is safe as long as you strictly follow the procedure. This is the recommended method by Audi and this is how they do it. The abrasive used is ground walnut shells. They should not get onto the cylinders if the ports that are being blasted are closed. But if some gets in there, it will not be harmful because it will be easily burned away. The volatile walnut shells are used for this reason. 😉

    @@ThatAfricanGuy damn... My car has about 200 000 km... I guess I have to do it soon... What part of the world do you live? What type of octane you fueled up with? I live in Canada, highest octane is 94, but is so rare, I usually put 91 in it, never went below... Might the octane value influence the carbon deposits in the intake?!

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

    @@RomanTrollanski I live in Togo. We have only one type of petrol fuel called here "Super Unleaded". I am not sure how different it is from the 91 Octane. But I usually add petrol treatment to improve the quality of the fuel mainly to keep the fuel system of the car clean. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to prevent carbon deposits from forming unless you have an oil catch can installed. All direct injection engines will suffer from carbon deposits at some point whatever you do. Cleaning carbon deposits on the valves is just regular maintenance for high mileage direct injection engines.

    @@ThatAfricanGuy thanks for the time you took to reply... I might do it, I also do the oil filter housing gasket since I'm getting there... The only concern is the injectors seals... I do not really wanna buy new ones since these are already fine...
