Starting car after standing 24 hours in -30 degrees. Before start the car was plugged in about 1 hour. The battery voltage went so low that boostgauge changes color :) It does so if the voltage drops. Also the plugs didn't glow because the water temperature was over +2C :)

this was fittet with the VP44 distributor injection pump from Bosch. These were the early and glorious days of Diesel Direct Injection at VAG, Common Rail came later. This AEL engine and its smaler brother, the 1Z/AFN were really able to stand the 0,5 Mkm yet and were ahead of the times. After that Volkswagen-Audi only bulit debased and unrefined engines, got overwhelmed from BMW, Mercedes and some Japan companies
good battery,starter ,glow plug ,fuel and you should not have a problem with start ups in cold.Plug in Heater for and hour i dont think is doing anything,you need more than that to warm it up

@MakeSh00t two weeks ago the temperature was -34 degrees, i drive about 160km/h until the diesel began to change paraffins :) Finland is not Siberia..or is it? ;)

Сам езжу на такой.. В - 28 запускаю стабильно.. Авто стоит ночь, без гаража. Но акб снимаю в ночь, запускаю на теплом акб

@florin171 with 5cyl tdi engine you can drive 500000km without opening engine ;)
I think you should wait about 15-20 sec after turning ignition key in positon II, maybe it turn on from first time )

Nowadays >450000tkm. Only have to replace wearing parts.
Something aint right th rpm is way off should be about 1200-1300 at start with this engine
