Attracting Voice-Over Clients & Minimizing Rejection (CAUTION: Crying In This Video!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Rejection can be a common and significant part of any voice-over life, especially when beginning your career. If it were a physical product we were selling, it would be much easier to handle a prospective customer passing on a purchase. However, it can feel devastating when we, as voice-over artists, are rejected for an audition or have little or no sales. If we reveal our true personalities and offer our authentic selves in our work, we feel personally rejected when turned down. Artists tend to feel things "louder" than others. I know that feeling well.
In this video, I speak with voice-over artist Leah, who has recently been passed over for a project. We talk about how to handle the rejection. We also discuss how we can minimize its occurrence by improving the quality of our voice-over recordings and marketing ourselves to attract ideal clients with whom we can create artistic synergy.

Just tried your "Submit Your Voice For Custom Processing". For a newbie it's - also - fantastic! Thanks, and happy new year!

One thing we all have to remember in this businesses don’t take it personally. Behind every now rejection is a yes and a client.🎉

Best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten was “rejection is protection and redirection. If you didn’t get the job, it wasn’t yours. You’ll get the one that is.” 😌

That is excellent stuff, Lenny. Those philosophies apply to all work online. I am a podcast editor and mixer and have been turned down for work. It used to confuse me why I did not get the gig, but then I realized that we were not a good match. I now have clients I like, and they found me. It is tough to hear “no”. Then I think about the record company that turned down The Beatles. Hang in there, Leah. Everything Lenny said is correct. It is a lot of ditch-digging, but the skyscraper rises quickly once the foundation is laid. Your voice sounds terrific with Lenny’s help. One day, you will look back and say, “Remember when I used to get so upset by losing a gig?” I am curious about gastral entergihtopus or whatever that word is.

So funny, I always say that auditioning and looking for work is like online dating, too. 😂 So true! People will appreciate you for you. Or, they won’t. And so, we don’t date them.😅❤

Lenny you are incredible brotha! I loved watching your process here. Your work with Leah affirmed and encouraged so much of the processing in my own brain right now. I could really appreciate the part of about marketing in this scenario as I am a nurse and leveraging that “trustworthy, confident, advocate” bedside manner is absolutely part of the brand. Thank you (and Leah). ✌🏼 💙

Hi Lenny😊 I’m currently dialing in my room treatment. I’m fortunate enough to have a decently sized space, so it’s taking a bit to get it fully treated. I’m mostly a vocalist and do VO occasionall, but my wife does a ton of audiobook narration through ACx. Once I get the room well treated, I’d like to start getting into outboard gear. I currently have great preamps in my Neve 88M, and I was looking to pair them With a great compressor through which I can track. Do you have any suggestions? I’m currently considering the WA-1B or WA-2A by Warm Audio. Many thanks for all you do! This video was very helpful for my artist soul as well💛

Hi @LBJedi, It sounds like you have some great equipment. If you get the room treated properly, you will surely have an amazing vocal and VO sound. If acoustic treatment is new to you, please consider my Acoustic Treatment For Voice-Over course. It will save you time, money, and frustration. However, you may know exactly what you're doing. In my opinion, you're on the right track with a WA-1B or WA-2A for tracking. A compressor is not completely necessary. It would help, however, if you are recording ultra-dynamic material.

@@HeyLennyB Thanks Lenny! I do have a good amount of experience with treatment, but it’s more with a mixing room than VO booth. I’ll check out your course just to be safe👍 I’m glad to know either of those compressors would be a good choice! I totally know a compressor is not necessary. I’d just like one for fun, and when my wife suddenly reads a very intense part of a book🤣
