Attracting crows to my yard

The one crow that is constantly looking behind him is new to my backyard. 😆 The one that lingers and eats seed as well has been with me since last summer.

One thing to do is let them see you when you put out the special treats. Or anything really. That way they will associate you with the food and see you as a friend. And I love that sneak up sideways routine, they act like hooligans that know the cops are watching.

The direction I come into the backyard is the way he or she keeps looking. Like I’m going to sneak up on them 🤣. The other one knows I’m sitting inside cause they know to look in the window. They are characters for sure!

Not just let them see you - only put the treats out when you are there, and police up any unclaimed treats before you leave, otherwise you are training them to wait for you to go away.

That sideways approach is body language that says “I’m fearful here and ready to run (fly). When they’re not afraid, they walk straight in. That’s the clue you can move the treat a little closer.

My Crows love peanuts. I feed them at home and outside my window at work. There's a large group that show up early when I refill my bird feeders. I sprinkle the peanut mix in the grass, and they come flying as I'm backing out the driveway. The Crows at work even knock on the glass by my desk. 😂

Or just as likely, the bird was simply trying to grasp and re-position the meat piece in his beak, before taking flight. The bird also looked undecided for a moment, if he was going to remain there, or fly away with "his catch".

I took me 2 years to make friends with our neighborhood crows. Probbaly because people here are jerks and give them a hard time. Last spring one landed on my fence and stared at me through the window for a while before flying away. And a year later, he finally hung around a bit and picked up some bird seed. In my experienced they love (unsalted) whole cashews and especially fried egg yolks. Those are their favorites. The scrub jays also love cashews.

I only really see the crows in the winter months now. I live on the edge of a wooded area and I believe they roost there. I learned the hard way that they will eat small animals. I work at home and sit at a window at the back of my home. I have a perfect view of this spot. I have several chipmunks that visit and last spring one of the crows picked one up by the tail!!! I immediately jumped up, the crow saw me and released the chipmunk. The crows stopped visiting for the most part once that happened. They can see me sitting in the window. I was shocked when they started visiting again but hunger can be a huge factor. Once the chipmunk incident happened I stopped encouraging them. But they know there is food here. I do like that they sound the alert when the hawk is out but I will have to watch them closely again this spring. Once weather is better I’m out in the yard gardening when I’m not tied to my work desk
