There's a video I saw years ago with a black corvid (can't remember which species, but they're all clever) which had found a piece of brown cardboard. It took it to the top of a snowy roof, stood on it and "snowboarded" down it, then flew back up with it and repeated it until, I assume, the fun wore off!

As I recall, it was a plastic disk, like a lid of some sort. The video is still available: Crow skis down roof. What's fascinating is not only that he does it repeatedly, but he tries the sunny side of the roof before going back to the shadowed, slicker side.

@@ArtfullyMusingLaura it's fun and necessary so why not for the little birds. Also in this cold weather they'd prefer snow baths over liquid water ones because there's the possibility of water freezing on their feathers, or so I heard.

As a kid, I remember watching ravens fly into the wind so that relative to the ground, they were hovering. Then they would tuck in their wings long enough to do rolls. That proved to me that they were having fun, there's no other reason I could see for them doing that.

I pour a pile of corn, sunflower seeds, and peanuts on two very large stumps... The crows start calling me about 1 hour after sunrise... then I mix their food two large coffee cans and deliver their breakfast... These crows are so large that sometimes i mistake them for hawk when they swoop in for their meal...

Reminds me of years ago when we watched a crowd of (UK) magpies perching at the top of tall trees and jumping off into the strong winds coming in from the west, allowing themselves to be whisked upwards, while they 'shouted' like kids on a rollercoaster then flew back down to join the back of the queues to have another go. Our garden was a long thin acre but the racket they were making reached the house. ❤

Watching birds have fun can be very amusing. A couple of years back I watched some sparrows enjoying themselves. About 10 of them gathered in the top of a 50 foot pine tree in next door's garden. They were taking it in turn to dive out of the top in pairs heading towards the back of our house, swiftly doing a 100 degree right turn to cross our garden pulling into a hard climb to go through a gap in the top branches of a tree two houses along from us, a smart 70 degree right turn to head for the wall of a house in the street behind us then a hard 120 right turn to climb back to the top of the pine tree. It was like watching a bird version of The Red Bull air races. One thing I notice was that they were not afraid to overbank for the tightest turn possible.

In it, he describes how he and another musher watched a small herd of bison run down a hill and slide across a frozen lake….repeatedly. We consistently underrate other species’ imagination, intelligence, and emotions, including a sense of fun.

In the summer of 1965 we saw Paint Your Wagon at the Pink Garter Theater in West Yellowstone. We had a WONDERFUL time and my big sister caught the garter that was tossed during a saloon dance number. Dad grew up in Montana. His granddad drove tourists around Yellowstone Park on horse drawn buses to see the sights at the new park. We were on the way to visit Grandma in Whitehall. I was so upset with dad when he washed the muddy paw prints off the car. Mom almost exited out the driver's door right over dad when that sweet little baby bear stood up to say hi to her thru the passenger window.

I'd say he's having a snow bath, but certainly enjoying it. I don't doubt that animals, particularly birds, do things for the pure joy of it. Many years ago, my wife and I hiked up one of the peaks on the rim of Wilpena Pound, South Australia. About half way up, an irregular movement up ahead caught my eye. It got rapidly closer and turned out to be a big corvid (probably Australian Raven) in a hurry, heading for the bottom by alternately tucking in his wings to dive vertically, then spreading them to pull out before hitting the hill. He flashed past us so close we could hear the airflow rushing over his feathers, and a sort of thump as he pulled out before continuing downward. We stood and watched him until he reached the bottom and pulled out above the top of the scrub. We've always remembered that as the day we saw Jonathan Livingstone Crow. If I was a bird, that's how I'd want to fly.

If you ask me (and you won't) the bird isn't playing. He isn't sliding as much as digging into the snow. I think he's either cleaning his feathers or removing parasites.

I have watched a pair of ravens playing leapfrog outside, in the snow. One raven jumped over its friend, then the other would do the same. As they landed, they'd flap on the spot or dive their head into the snow, scattering it everywhere.

Could be trying to bath at the same time. I catch ravens doing the same thing on the roofs at Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island (Southern California) early in the morning using the collected morning dew to slide and bath in.

I watched seagulls floeing (yes, I do mean floeing) and others floating down a river toward a bridge (at different locations and times). The floeing ones simply floeed on; the floating ones took off short of the bridge, flew back to their point of origin (I assume/suppose), settled upon the water, and floated down the river again toward the bridge... only to re-live their enjoyment(?)... I do wonder, period...
