I have watched a pair of ravens playing leapfrog outside, in the snow. One raven jumped over its friend, then the other would do the same. As they landed, they'd flap on the spot or dive their head into the snow, scattering it everywhere.

The local crows here base jump off of a large chimney. They dive to the ground vertically, in a falling manner, and then, before hitting the ground, start flapping their wings and land. Almost looking proud. Only to then repeat the whole thing. At first I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Had a blast watching them. I'll try filming it next time.

I had a neighbor who used to hose down a sloped bed in his front yard in the winter so it'd ice up and the crows would come slide down it on their backs like kids in a playground.

I lived in a place for awhile with a garage. I had a flock playing, but they truly slid down, and flew back up to do it again. I watched them for quite awhile...they were having such a fun time!

It might have been doing this for fun, but my guess is that since most water bodies were probably frozen at the time, this was the only way it could bathe itself.

I'd say he's having a snow bath, but certainly enjoying it. I don't doubt that animals, particularly birds, do things for the pure joy of it. Many years ago, my wife and I hiked up one of the peaks on the rim of Wilpena Pound, South Australia. About half way up, an irregular movement up ahead caught my eye. It got rapidly closer and turned out to be a big corvid (probably Australian Raven) in a hurry, heading for the bottom by alternately tucking in his wings to dive vertically, then spreading them to pull out before hitting the hill. He flashed past us so close we could hear the airflow rushing over his feathers, and a sort of thump as he pulled out before continuing downward. We stood and watched him until he reached the bottom and pulled out above the top of the scrub. We've always remembered that as the day we saw Jonathan Livingstone Crow. If I was a bird, that's how I'd want to fly.

Watching birds have fun can be very amusing. A couple of years back I watched some sparrows enjoying themselves. About 10 of them gathered in the top of a 50 foot pine tree in next door's garden. They were taking it in turn to dive out of the top in pairs heading towards the back of our house, swiftly doing a 100 degree right turn to cross our garden pulling into a hard climb to go through a gap in the top branches of a tree two houses along from us, a smart 70 degree right turn to head for the wall of a house in the street behind us then a hard 120 right turn to climb back to the top of the pine tree. It was like watching a bird version of The Red Bull air races. One thing I notice was that they were not afraid to overbank for the tightest turn possible.

Someone said they're actually cleaning themselves. So its either the snow or the freezing water for them. But knowing ravens, they're probably also having fun while doing it. 😂
