    Obviously there are arguments on both sides as to the "remedies" of the PGA against "rogue" PGA members. That said, at the end of the day this is not complicated. Follow the money. The players have been enticed by extraordinary $ and arguably better playing conditions. A competitor has poached them not unlike what happens in the business world. I can hardly blame someone for accepting a raise and guaranteed income regardless of result. My beef if I have one...is why don't they just say as much. To couch it in terms of "its good for the game of golf"..blah blah....even if true...is not why they are going to LIV. If the $ wasn't there they wouldn't be there.

    My biggest beef with this whole thing is the media. One week your a great player and they can't say enough good things about you and the next week you join LIV and they portray you as a washed up has-been. The golf media has joined the ranks of main stream media. We'll see how they like being referred to as THE FAKE GOLF NEWS.

    Yet only 48 spots. Stop believing LIV is in this for the better of the players. Greg Norman and the. saudis have an agenda and it isn’t for the betterment of the game. It isn’t about choice as LIV tourneys are mandatory for the players. Pga has 15 min but players can choose which ones.

    That has been the position all this time. Many European tour pros are members of both the US PGA tour and DP World Tour so long as they play the minimum number of times. Kaymer lost his when he failed to play the minimum a few years ago. The difference now is the PGA perceive the LIV Tour as a threat and do not want to accept it. It's simply about politics and power. The Saudi connection human rights blah blah is just a red herring. No complains when the Euro tour event for men and ladies was held in Saudi

    This is how I see the problem for antitrust purposes. The PGA tour will claim that it needs to require releases and control the number and timing of them to be able to assure sponsors that there is a likelihood (not a guarantee) that there will be a sufficient number of “name” players playing at a given event. If it can’t do that, the tour’s attractiveness to sponsors, at least in “lesser” events, could become impaired, with bad consequences. Suppose LIV went opposite PGA Event A and secured the top 25 top names for a LIV event with a combo of appearance fees and purse, thereby greatly reducing the value of that sponsorship to a company that put its name on it? So merely requiring players to play 15 events isn’t going to protect the PGA Tour from a LIV offensive that could pick off a lot of its tournaments. That’s the PGA argument that I think it will have to make. However, the Tour may have gone too far in issuing a blanket denial to any player for any LIV event, trying to strangle the LIV baby in the crib. That could be a big problem.

    Player should be allowed to play anywhere they want obviously if more people are committed to the PGA and they're playing more tournaments in the PGA then they maybe will be able to earn more rights to keep their supposed status so if you're not playing as many tournaments you could jeopardize having your card as far as majors go I'm very curious how that's going to work because DJ has qualified for majors for a while now and given that he is a masters and I forget what other major he won but he's won at least two and that qualifies him for a lot in the future I think 5 years of exemption. I'll be interested to see how the PGA reacts to players like DJ. I think the PGA should just stay pat and allow players to go play anywhere eventually these alternative tours will probably not make it and then all the players will come back.

    I’m not sure the US has much of a “moral high ground” when it comes to human rights. If you’re a capitalist then you’d have to agree that competition is good for the consumer. The problem resides in the PGA not having foreseen the possibility of a competing organization. At the end of the day money will do the ‘talking’, the PGA will have to modify its stance, and the potential for most similar organizations to lose their 501(c)3 status. These are the times in which we live.

    if they're contractors, 2 questions... could the pga tour choose not to renew contracts with certain players? is that not their choice? at least for pga tour events... secondly, can "contractors" get a pension/retirement funded by the pga tour? i believe the pga tour funds their players pensions... and since the majors are mostly based on owgr, getting points to qualify for the majors would be difficult, but not impossible. additionally, other sports have limitations on the players. for example, in MMA, you cannot have a contract with UFC and one of the other promoters. i don't think players in the NFL could choose to play in the canadian football league and the NFL at the same time. numerous examples of this scenario.

  • @terryweller1233

    @terryweller1233

    The players are independent contractors as regards the PGA Tour, not contractors. There is no contract between them and the PGA. While this is true, the PGA can provide certain benefits such as contributing to a player's retirement plan if it chooses as an inducement to have players play in their events. The reason NFL, NBA, MLB players can not play for another league is because they have an emplooyee/employer relationship with their team. This is very different than being an independent contractor such as with the PGA situation. Generally, independent contractors (the players) have the right to play when/where they want due to their non-employment status with the organization. The PGA is attempting to make the case that they can control the players right to choose where they want to play as if there were an employee/employer relationship.

    It is quite common for independent contractors to have work restrictions while they are working for their "contractor" and also for a year or two after their job ends (depending on the circumstances - unless they live in a liberal anti-business state like California that prohibits enforcement of such a restrictive covenant. Also, the players are tour members that aside from agreeing to contractual restrictions , they are aside from being an independent contractor, they are also your members that agreed to and are technically part of the rule making process. Restrictive work covenants (depending on circumstances) are quite common in independent contractor relationships. Freedom of contract which is a free market principle, none of the players had to sign their tour contracts or agree to the tour rules when they joined...Too many misinformed fans....

    Everyone wants to tell others how to spend their money and why they should be playing golf. For these guys golf is their job. Sure, history and tradition is important, but have every right to take more money from a other competitor, just like most other would if another company offers more money, guarantees and more time off. This whole human rights arguement by the PGA doesnt hold water. PGA just wants to keep their monopoly. They should focus on improving/updating more of their archaic rules and style of play. The PGA has poor ratings overall and is not growing, look at the stats. Now they see LIV coming in and they are worried; declining ratings, except when Tiger plays, and now competition on their home field.

    I, for one, am tired of the same old tournaments every year all the time. LIV Golf provides the variety we as golfers like to see. The two tours should be able to coincide as the Asian and DP World tours do. If they’re worried about “blood money” of the Saudis, the PGA Tour under Finchem gave millions of dollars yo the Clinton Foundation which is as crooked an organization as they come. Ya don’t think twice when you’re filling your car up with gas which we buy from the Saudis. These hypocrites at the PGA Tour and namely Rory McIlroy need to back off their high horse.

    Jeff you wrote "LIV Golf provides the variety we as golfers like to see." What you should have written was LIV Golf provides the variety I as a golfer like to see. You do not speak for "golfers" only yourself. Trying to equate "filling your car up with gas which we buy from the Saudis" is not a good argument. Not all gas comes from the Saudis. If our government would do the right thing we would not need to buy gas from any other country. So maybe you need to get off your high horse unless you are a member of the PGA Tour and have a voice in what is done. Other wise it is not any of your business how it is operated.

    Many people have a misunderstanding of monopolies. Monopolies are companies that have a lock on a work or lifestyle. For example, Microsoft was a monopoly because, despite other computer OS's like MacOS or Linux being available, your work/lifestyle doesn't carry value unless you use Microsoft Windows. But to argue for monopolies among millionaires is a total joke. Here you have Dustin Johnson or Phil Mickelson who are millionaires for life, and they could stop playing golf totally and their families would still live very comfortable lives. Even the alternative tours are available if you still have the competitive juices. The only difference then between the PGA Tour and other tours is how much time you are willing to stay away from your families. If you play the PGA Tour, you're probably way for 38 weeks of the year. The LIV Tour will only be eight weeks. I don't consider that an argument for a monopoly in any way. The PGA Tour is nowhere near that of Microsoft or AT&T. The other thing I disagree with is the idea of an independent contractor. The Q-school of the PGA Tour is not just six rounds of golf, but it is also required classroom learning on how you manage your winnings when you do get a paycheck. The PGA Tour never hid the idea that it is in fact a union, and you can only play tournaments run by it if you are a member because the PGA Tour uses its resources to create tournaments and obtain memberships. This is why the PGA Tour is a non-profit, much like a healthcare HMO is also a non-profit. All HMOs do is connect you with a physician, and the HMO makes sure the physician gets paid. The PGA Tour is no different!
