I love how the manga shows facial expressions, especially the farther you read. An entire page can go with zero dialogue and you can still feel the emotion by their expressions. The fewer words that are needed, the better it flows, like compared to those pages of DB Super you pulled up for comparison with tons of text

The early manga work isn’t too bad. Yea it looks pretty rough at the beginning but movement of the panels with the characters and designs helps build up the tension. You can see moments where the tone of horror is really intentional

@modauth About the panel layouts in Super, while there's still room for improvements, it's much now than those earlier one's you showed.

I think he redrew some of the first chapters and well, you can see the improvements (also idk why, but I really love sketchy/rough artstyles, specifically from jujutsu kaisen and chainsaw man)

JJK is incredibly rough. Even in the recent chapters, it’s near impossible to tell who’s who.

Isayama's dynamism and panel composition manages to really flourish in the battles between titans. While not the most consistent, his art definitely has a lot to it and some of the panels (even in the beginning in my opinion) are very impressive.

Yeah, the composition is outstanding. Still a bit confused about the inconsistency but probably all due to lack of time. Though story is always key anyways

@@modauth Ah that's mostly because Isayama didn't know how to draw when he started. You can find online volume 0 of the story, which is the initial draft that he showed to mulltiple publishers before getting accepted, and you can see how much his art improved in the period of time before he got serialised. He basically had less than a year to learn if I remember correctly.

I've never understood the attack on titan manga criticism. This comes from the fandom that thought one punch man season 2 looked bad. Seriously, have you guys LOOKED at the ORIGINAL one punch man webcomic? Everything is a step up. >_>

Yeah, fandom can be really toxic some times, kinda unfortunate. Not only in the Manga Community though, I feel like almost all big franchises have the problem

I agree with most of your points, but the scene at 4:23 is supposed to be inconsistent with the other artwork to showcase that it indeed is drawn by a human inside the world of the manga. That's why it looks sketchier/more simplified than the other parts. Nice video still, I love it whenever anyone talks about AOT on youtube!

The art style definitely isn’t bad. I personally think a lot of the complaints comes from people who are used to seeing stuff like Dragonball, Bleach, MHA or from other artist with a more polished style with cleaner lines. Naturally it’s a bit of a jarring departure to go from looking at a clean art style to something that’s a bit more sketchy and expressive. Personally I think the art style used in AOT creates a uniquely creepy atmosphere which would be diminished if the style was more polished.

Yes so true, personally as an artist I prefer super clean lines but I couldn’t imagine how AOT would look like with a super clean style. I think the Titans would have turned out a lot less creepy etc.

@@emiliosalazar9962 not to be rude but i don't think you understand art direction. The artstyle is purposefully sketchy and creepy because it's going for horror vibs. If AOT was drawn using the MHA artstyle for example then the atmosphere of the manga wouldn't be anywhere near as creepy or scary.

@@createmistakes You have no idea of what you are talking about, it has absolutely nothing to do with atmosphere and everything to do with time, is simply easier and faster to do bad art. That's why the atmosphere of the Berserk manga with the masterful work of Kentaro Miura is infinitely more creepy, horrifying and atmospheric than the amateur level drawings of the Attack on Titan manga, I'm sorry that you feel the need to fanboy, but that is the truth, the art is simply bad because the artist isn't as talented or skilled, and on top of that, he is rushing to meet death lines, simple as that.

Its Art is so terrible for it. It was refused over and over for years and should never really have been published. Its just got an interesting story hook, nothing els.

the titan you show at 4:46 i think its supposed to look a bit unpropotioned, actually in the anime the torso is really bigg compared to the arms. Not quite exagerated like in the manga but isnt propotionate on purpose. Nice vid

I can definitely understand why Isayama kept getting rejected, when you look at his early art style. His writing is what got him on board and blew the franchise up, especially the much better art in the anime, which even Isayama said himself, it inspired him. Thankfully, his art later on improved tremendously.

You have to check out later chapters (134, 131, 122, 120, 104) beautiful/haunting imagery and composition

I bought the omnibus for 1-3 even tho I skipped thru it and it looked.. kinda not so well drawn but two things I was actually looking was out of sale from the store so I was like why not. The bigger size for the pages doesn't help at all with the manga, it just brings our more into the view of some of the shabbyness. But whatever it's fine.

Well, speaking of Murata's One Punch Man redesign, his version of Ugly F***** looks horrifying. Honestly, chapters with him are my favorite out of entire Garou arc because of the expressions.
