I’m honestly not surprised that Templin doesn’t like the Banished since they always get a lot wrong about the halo universe and just skim wikis. iE thinking that the UNSC is the entire human goverment (That would be the UEG) and that the Sangheili had a large number of human sympathizers during the covenant war

I see where your coming from, but I disagree. We have seen in halo wars 2 through the gameplay that the banished can produce supplies and wargear, not just steal it, as well as create and produce new designs in a standardized manner, not just have a ramshackle army of customized personal vehicles and weapons. In addition, we dont know what happens in the years between halo 5 and infinite, though the new book coming out will likley explain that. My guess is the mass AI uprising lead by the corrupted cortana fragment (and yes him fairly certain its only a fragment, or the main cortana but with pieces missing) would have likley crippled the UNSC's already weakened military power, which allowed the banish to soundly defeat the UNSC at Zeta halo.

Honestly they seem to be a foil to Cutter, who is currently seperated from the rest of the UNSC because of his decisions that he believed would aid in humanity's survival in the human-covenant war by denying the now deceased Regret a potential Forerunner fleet. He sacrificed himself, his way back home and his crew to be lost in space for the rest of the war until the Spirit of Fire reached the Ark. In contrast Atriox got tired of him and the brutes beside him being constantly used as cannon fodder to be thrown in the meat grinder against humanity. He lost faith in the Covenant's great journey and was even accused and framed as a heretic by the Covenant in order to get rid of him, his influence, and potentially dangerous thoughts to the covenant religion. These things made him an outcast to be executed by the very Covenant he was getting tired of. Execution fails and suddenly he starts gaining a following as unlike the Covenant he actively seeks to invite those that tried to kill him such as elites of the Silent Shadow. This Brute and the Banished were never meant to be such a big threat to anyone other than the Spirit of Fire, who also were separated from the UNSC and were essentially on their own. But they seemed to get popular enough that 343 wants to act like they are this big threat when they never were. Their prescence in Infinite is a big marketing ploy and this will fundamentally change and expand them into something that lore-wise they never were. I like them as a mercenary group that does it's own thing outside the main conflicts, but it's going to be really stupid if 343 suddenly comes out and says that they too are an interstellar Empire like the Covenant were. I also know better than to trust a logistics AI like Isabel for a proper analysis on an enemy. She is a scared individual who will talk big about the enemy that crushed those she worked along with becuase she is not a military AI like Serena or Cortana(pre-gravemind torture and pre-rampancy) who could keep their cool under stressful situations like a big alien threat that outnumbers the local human population stuck on a ship in the middle of space, alien ring world, or alien shield world. You make a great point and your take on the group of Xenos known as the Banished is greatly appreciated abominable intelligence.

Whilst many of your points are correct some can be explained. While halo infinite is not out yet we can see that they have established a new leadership structure with Atriox stuck on the Ark and Escherum (or however you spell it) seemingly taking the lead. We also know there is some form of development of weapons and vehicles for instance the blisterback is “a massive aerial siege vehicle developed and built by the banished” (from the blisterback Phoenix log) we also see mining operations occurring on the ark; this clearly indicates that there is some form of civilian industry within the banished (although it is likely much less prominent than other nations/groups). This may indicate that the banished holds territory, or more likely are a highly mobile fleet based organisation with a large military focus, after transitioning away from the early raid based organisation. This helps with the lack of supply lines issue although I will admit doesn’t sort out the political/ military linkage. Overall the banished suffer from an issue all too common in science fiction, we know a lot about their military but very little about civilian aspects, giving the idea the group is just one big army. However I may be completely wrong about all this and this is just what I think is likely.

I refuse to believe the Covenant is gone, yes their capital city was destroyed...yes their religion was proven false...but the Covenant was WAY bigger than the games and books themselves show in their limited space/bubble. It had a lot of other Alien Species we have not seen and some ARE canon but never made it into the games. A Star-spanning Empire like that just doesn't go away from one day to another. Hell in one the books a Minor Covenant Prophet discovers a Sangheili colony that had been isolated from the other systems for so long it developed its own language and culture shortly after escaping High Charity. For all we know there are hundreds of Covenant systems still out there, with entire fleets stationed on them now coming to our area of the galaxy after losing contact with their Holy city, hundreds of exploration/artifact retrieval teams now coming home only to find their Empire gone, a new previously undiscovered sentient species rising and desecrating/assimilating holy artifacts and a fuckton of mercenary/religious groups pretending to call themselves "Covenant" playing with their god's creations. How come the creative leads at 343 never thought about this boggles me.

@@bartybum Well, it's initially said that The Banished are technically some kind of "pirates", Atriox respet humanity (really weird for a Brute), this was said on the comic Rise of Atriox, he isn't looking for a really interesting goal, he only wants to live his life in the best way he can, and that is actually the modo of the Banished, but here is the interesting stuff, because at the begining Atriox wouldn't kill humans without a purpose, and yet in the Ark (year 2559) killed a bunch of scientists, I wonder what happened between the creation of the Banished and the actual time in the Halo storyline. The Banished aswell count with the Silent Shadows and the suport of the Keepers of the One Freedom (another Covenant faction that still believes in the Great Journey, with humans in their troops) if it's needed, and a few other species thet were cut from the Bungie era, so, at the moment, the Banished are not a interesting villain, but they are imponent and 343i has the chance to do with them whatever they want. That being said, the posibilities of Atriox appearing on Infinite are 10% because he is stranded on the Ark alonside with the Spirit of Fire and most likely the Banished that are inside the Galaxy believe that he's dead. I really think that Escharum (the Brute of the the gameplay) is an oportunist, and is goin' to take the place of Atriox trying to make the Banished into his own perspective of life. I think we gotta see the Banished as the Covenant in CE, without depth in their ideals until further time

From the AI quote you shared, it sounds like some writer thought that a mercenary force could become basically a nation-state overnight, and therefore the Banished turned into a clone of the UNSC in said writer's mind. All because...they fought the Covenant and survived. Clearly the only way to do survive the covenant is to be exactly like the other group we know of that survived the covenant. And then, the writer thinks, since we need the Banished to be a threat, we'll say they were better than the UNSC at surviving the covenant! It's perfect. This of course makes no sense to anyone who knows how reality actually works. But as a writer, I think I can see where a fellow writer may have fallen down a chain of faulty logic.

When I first learned of the Banished in HW 2, I thought the same as you. Yeah, in a small conflict, like the one in HW 2, the Banished are a big threat, but on a larger scale, they lack everything you just mentioned. However the Halo universe is currently complex enough that the Banished are a big threat and can establish themselves as a successor state in short order. Here a few factors that give context: The UNSC right now cannot effectively counter the Banished or any other large group in a cohesive manner. It is rent in a war for its survival against the Created. An AI created society, led by the Rampant Cortana, who is now immortal and possesses access to Forerunner technology and logistics capability. The Swords of Shanghelios is also in conflict with the Created and so cannot effectively or directly truly challenge the Banished as a whole. Furthermore, the Swords are a very recent government and are having to recreate their society in the middle of another galactic conflict. The Brute worlds are just as fractured as the UNSC and the Swords, with severe logistic and societal shortcomings, not helped because the Brutes are so belligerent and so lack true interstellar cohesion. Enter the Banished, an emerging power, with unknown numbers (possibly in the millions apparently), but focused, dedicated, well armed, well directed and with a new ideology, bolstered by a powerful cult of personality. They have been able to gather and expand on a vast stellar navy and kept it running for a number of years in relatively good condition and in the mean time have begun to build their own weapons and vehicles. They have a mobile but stable logistics base from where to continue to raid, plunder and gather new followers. And as Halo Infinite recently showed, the group can exist for some time without Atriox and even build upon his message. A message of unity, strength and self-reliance around which a society can be built even if the figurehead dies, much as has happenned with many countries in the past, where their founders have died, but the system continues even without them. Now here is the important part: After the end of the Human Covenant war, Atriox saw an opportunity to establish a unified Jiralhanae nation and even possibly take over some of the Covenant. His plan was simple. Conquer the fracture Jiralhanae planets and forge them into a new center for his empire. One with a new vision and where he could properly establish a long term logistical base, while the rest of the other factions where rebuilding. But then he found the Ark and knew that having that power would ensure his supremacy over the galaxy, ergo why he is in the Ark in the first place. It is unknown what has happened since his disappearance, but considering the state the other "Major" players are in, and the devotion and the power of Atripx's original message, a well equipped and apparently well supplied mercenary faction can become a big danger even to the UNSC which is still reeling from the devastating blackout imposed by the Created.

@@bubbasbigblast8563 The Banished from the beginning have been scavengers and opportunists. So they have been raiding Covenant depots in Covenant space for years if not outright decades at this point, they have the knowledge of how to get into these places, and this was when they where well defended. In the aftermath of the collapse of the Covenant, raiding these depots became even easier, because there was no coordinated defense network to provide security. A real world example would be the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the aftermath of this collapse, an unknown amount of military hardware just went outright missing, even possibly nuclear material. The Banished have been taking supplies this way for a long time and growing in the mean time. Furthermore, they have an unknown amount of Engineers, which take care of maintenance for the Banished, allowing them to keep their ships in tip top shape even with minimal technical knowledge to begin with. Fast forward a decade or so, and now the Banished are very proficient even without engineers of maintaining their equipment and also of modifying it as we see in HW 2 and even have created completely original designs of their own. The creators at 343 Industries have been very clear on how the Banished have grown to become a clear danger to the established factions and have also taken advantage of the current state of the galaxy to position the Banished as a credible threat. Specially since the group that went with Atriox was an elite part of his forces, but not the bulk of his forces. Forces that continue Atriox's vision even without him, because they believe in the cause that Atriox created and have benefitted from belonging to the Banished.

Interesting vid, though a couple things: 1. There were no "rising tensions" between Humanity and the Covenant; the latter went to war against the former practically right after first contact was officially made. 2. Whatever Military Organisation and Logistics the UNSC had during their height of power during the Cold War have more than likely been severely crippled due to Space Hitler Cortana imposing a galaxy-wide police state through her EMP-spewing guardians. This is most evident in the UNSC relying on a lot of older weapon models, as demonstrated in Infinite. 3. Good thing that the Hand of Atriox existed to manage the Banished forces in the Milky Way while Atriox was on the Ark. And even with Atriox's demise, I'm sure they'd be able to keep things going for a fair while longer, especially since the most trusted member of the Hand, Escharum, was Atriox's own mentor.

My guess is that’s why they want the Halo ring. That’s their ticket to destroy the Created and humanity. If they kill humanity then you can never make another Smart AI. The only reason Atriox took the Ark was because Cortana knocked out the UNSC fleet. So it’s a plot point that they’re taking advantage of the chaos this rampant AI has caused.

What I would have loved to see is if the UNSC broke apart, as stated in the lore of the books and etc, the UNSC or UEG is made up of numerous nation's spanning continents or planets. The only reason it didn't fall apart sooner was because of the covenant who served as the greater enemy. But since the Covenant has fallen I would love to see if the UNSC splintered into different factions in the aftermath of the war. (This is assuming that Halo 4 and 5 never happened)

A better analogy to best describe why the Banished were winning against the Covenant is that the Covenant is the USA and the Banished is Vietnam one has an actual military that can take on anyone but the other is using gorilla tactics to avoid attacks and hurt them more. As the UNSC as actual worlds that can be targeted the Banished didn't have any which made it harder for them to be directly attacked and while if they ever go on an actual war they will lose and since they seem to now be an actual army they will in any realistic sense lose against any other established force. Cause they will now hold worlds that will change their entire way they do warfare.

This is more akin to a horror survival film like Riddick or Alien than it is a total war piece like the first 3 halo games. Man, you nail it for me. When the Banished and Jul'mdama covenant was revealed I was very disappointed. In lore before the Covenant war, humanity was at war with insurectionist who are basically outer human colonies versus the UNSC who are the inner human colonies. A lot of books mentions that aside from Harvest and some outer colonies, the Covenant basically bum rush the inner colonies and Earth, utterly destroys it's fleets, industries, resources and population. I mean even when the war was between human and aliens, do you really tgink that after the war was over, the outer colonies would go: "yip dee doo, that was a nice war chaps lets go back to tilling fields for the inner colonies". Heck no, they would immediately declare independence, scavenge covie tech, ransacked ex UNSC weapon stockpile, hire Kigyar pirates and mercs to take over the inner colonies. Wouldn't it be great if for the Halo sequel we got to fight human using sangheli tech, carrying Kigyar power shields and using mixed bullet and plasma weaponry? Not only so, it would create a great political dynamic where the outer colonies would be secretly backing Jul'mdama covenant to wipe Arby Sword of Sanghelios, because they know that if Arby won, he would ally with humanity and fight them? The possibilities!!! Instead we got Covenant 2 electric boogaloo and Covenant 3 red go fasta.

Plus sure, the covenant didn’t get atroix, but do you think they were actually trying? Chief and blue team killed like a million of them and destroying lots of their ships, which was only a small set back. I mean the unsc had the Spartans and I believe they banish had to come into power around when the elites defied the Covenant and started a rebellion. I mean we see what the covenant did to planets like Reach, Harvest and Arcadia and what they did to Earth in awhile. I’m possible they could’ve found where atroix was and cripple his army.

Halo Infinite switching gears completely to focusing on The Banished and resolving the entire story set up in H4 and H5 off-screen because of fan backlash is the single greatest example I can think of as to why fans need to shut the f*** up with the toxic backlash until a story is finished being told. We were denied the conclusion of that story arc because some of us have displayed a shocking inability to let the storyteller finish what they're saying and we demand these drastic changes mid-franchise, which has historically NEVER gone well, and then we blame the storyteller AGAIN when their attempt to course correct away from their original vision feels as forced and half-hearted as it inevitably was.

I have the exact same opinion with the Banish as well! One of my biggest questions I have with the faction is why are they choosing to fight head on with the UNSC if they are just a really big pirate or raider organization? Fighting head on with the UEG is suicide for the faction as mentioned in this video. The Banish will not last long with a conventional war of attrition due to the nature of their faction as previously said, and I see Atriox more as Stellaris Great Khan crisis event that just so happened to spawn really late into the game with the end game crisis running amok haha. Overall, the Banish do not look scary, and they seem more like a wildcard in the grand scheme of the Halo universe. I play too much Stellaris and Paradox games haha.

They're only a galactic threat when they get their hands on a weapon or resource like a Halo, but they're only a threat because of what they have. The Banished the covenant version of the UNSC's "insurrection (innies)" which Spartians were originally designed and made to quash. Let them be a "major" threat when they do show up because they screw with everyone else plan.

Actually, no. German-Slavs-Steppe tribes didn't match Rome. As shown by Claudius in Britain, Nero in Israel or Trajan in Dacia, Rome in I-II centuries A.D. could master 50,000-100,000 in a single campaign. Tribes had no this strenght. Things changed in Marcus Aurielus reign when the tribes started for many reasons to unify themselves in powerful Confederations like Franks, Vandals, Alemans etc... Even so, their power was far lesser than Rome. Rome fell because Romans devoured themselves in bloody civil wars. Of course Kings like Geiseric of Vandals did many against Rome but it was a very limited thing. A dying Rome with Aetius or Maggiorianus literally forced tribes in submisson. After civil wars the greatest threat to Rome was the Sassanid Empire in the east and at last it was defeated by half empire in VII century.

Physical strength does matter though. It determines the amount of unpowered armor, the weight of weapons, and how much heavy equipment you need for repair and maintenance (who needs a fork lift or a jack when you are just as strong). And that is assuming no melee combat. And if you have a high strength to weight ratio, then you can handle many wounded. Either way, you can secure more prisoners of the enemy.

I think the silver bullet to the Banished was the same silver bullet as a lot of Infinite: it's a sequel to a game that never existed. Not as many people played Halo Wars 2, and even fewer read the comics/novels, so when we meet the Banished in Infinite they're already an established superpower that's outsmarted Cortana and crushed the UNSC without buildup and with barely any explanation, so it feels really sudden and forced. And because Infinite is so focused on what's immediately happening, we get basically zero in-story lore or context about the Banished. Like, I know their backstory and philosophy, but I can barely tell you what their actual GOAL is.

  • @PatrickBoyda
    @PatrickBoyda10 ай бұрын

10:20 I will say to be fair -- and this isn't communicated in the main campaign, which is a huge problem -- Atriox built the Banished as more of a Mongol Khanate than a mercenary company. It was built on the idea of self-determinism through conquest and plunder, rather than religious piety and self-sacrifice. In the supplementary material and Infinite's audio logs, he comes off as a genuine revolutionary and quasi-philosopher. So when he dies, he becomes a martyr and an example for the Banished to keep fighting. However, I do not think this is remotely well told in the game proper.
