Hey I'm sure you already figured this out by now, but if you lay some painters tape on top of the wood, it will prevent (to some extent) the wood burning on the top.

I actually rarely use the laser cutter, so I have not given that a try. Good tip, I will try it next time!
Air assist will help you immensely will cut through easier with no much less char ..
