Supposing that Egyptians tried to cover their defeat against God and Jewish people, it couldn't be possible to hide something like that. There would be the entire Egyptian army under the Red Sea and other nations would have heard about this defeat and would have tried to conquer Egypt because it was a fertile land. I respect rabbi Tovia Singer, I support the state of Israel. I really like Jewish culture and Israeli people, but I question the biblical accuracy.

One cannot criticise the estimable Rabbi for trying, but it simply doesn't hold water. So much depends on "the Jews exist" and "the Bible tells me so". This is not persuasive for anybody who does not already believe it. That said, I am very grateful, as an atheist, for the Rabbi's gentle, dogged responses to the claims of Christianity. What evidence is persuasive? Some people are not persuaded by vaccines because they hold a negative bias toward the Ethos of science. Alternatively someone can have a more subjectively-oriented epistemology and you won't be able to prove certain things to that person. The Torah is one historical account of Mount Sinai. Now how many more accounts do you need? 2? 10? 1000? At what point does it become persuasive? There's a huge psychological element behind that. I personally think that the fulfillment of the highly specific and very unlikely prophecies is enough of an evidence, you can argue with that but again what is the point that you'd say "ok that's enough evidence". Let's go one step further, even if you find all the evidence in the world, perhaps the world is a solipsistic illusion that aliens created for me in order to control my mind? Who knows? Regarding archaeology, the ancient city of Ugarit was discovered by accident in 1928. Up to a few decades ago the consensus was that David did not exist but it was disproved. More recently there were found inscriptions from the Judges period (that Yerubaal handle). There has been reasonable continuity in the overall tradition with all prominent figures documented. Kind of like Christians agree that Ezra was a prophet, but Pharisees twisted the word of God, but if we assume that children who were born at the beginning of 2nd temple knew the word of God and probably died around age 50, and on the other hand we can trace the Pharisaic schools at least to Hilel who was born about 150 years before the destruction of the 2nd temple. So that leaves 200 years for the Torah to be corrupted beyond repair by obscure figures in unreasonable conditions. So where is the point where truth becomes myth and vice versa? Yes some things aren't to be found and I myself would base my faith on just archaeology, though, just like you don't have to have video footage of a murder, you can still convict the murderer with enough cumulative evidence, perhaps some testimonies, perhaps circumstancial evidence, etc. etc. Now if we examine closely what the atheist said in the video, he stated that he'd want more precise scientific claims in the Torah. I think that more than it tells about the Torah it tells about his epistemology and values. Scientific achievements and information is of the highest value. But let's imagine someone who doesn't really care about science, but cares about mental state perhaps, maybe career success, or someone who's interested in aesthetics and beauty and judges the truthfulness of the Torah by the virtue of beauty. Up to a few hundred years ago nobody had problem with the idea of science and religion. Many Greek philosophers were very smart and knew some science and yet believed in a creator and perhaps worshipped some Greek gods. Some also did not. But what I claim is a shift in epistemology and values that creates a bias. Yes the Torah isn't 100% persuasive in all possible fields to all people and I don't think it has to be. Part of HaShem's love to people is not forcing them to love Him.

"because the Bible tells me so" is a reverse way of looking at it. The Bible is believed in the first place only because the people experienced the events it describes before they were written. For example, if you wrote a book about my life there are two options: either it's correct and thus I accept it, or it's wrong and thus I reject it. The incorrect assumption is that a book about group A was introduced to group B who didn't know group A, and group B accepted it because why not. It's a book about the Jewish people, written by Jews, for a Jewish audience. The fact that the Jewish audience accepted a book that describes what they themselves experienced means that the witnesses are signing their testimony.

@@Lestibournes You only (think you) know that "the people experienced the events" described in the Bible because they are written in the Bible. This is tantamout to circular reasoning. You have no way of knowing what precisely happened in the distant past of the Jews or how long elapsed between the oral telling of tales and the writing down of those tales. Let us imagine that "Moses" wrote the first few books. How long after Adam and Eve did he do this? How did he know about these long-past events? To me, this is still "because the Bible tells me so".

Those who believe in him, honour and support him, and follow the light sent down to him will be successful. Say, “O humanity, I am God's Messenger to you all. To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. There is no god except Him. This gentleman reminds me of my brother who is also an atheist and speaks just like him. My brother says he only believes in science. He just had a surgery because of colorectal cancer. While he was in the hospital, I kept on praying for HaShem, blessed is He, to show my brother His glory like He did to me when I prayed 46 years ago with a broken heart, to the Almighty God, Creator of the universe, and he showed me His Hebrew Name and brought me to the Sanctuary in the desert where the Ark of the Covenant was. At that time I had never heard, seen, or experienced such thing because I had never read the Torah or Bible. I didn't know anything about the Hebrew or Jewish people. It took me 35 years, after researching what was the meaning for this revelation. Well, it was the four letter Hebrew Name of HaShem and the rest is self explanatory. The Creator of the universe, showed me who He was and what He wanted me to do. I later found out that my ancestors were from Sephardic Jews coming from the tribe of Reuven. How could anyone ever explain this?

One thing that came to my mind during your talk was a film/documentary series called Patterns of Evidence, I saw it while I was looking into Christianity (I never became a Christian), but listening to the academics interview in that series was still interesting. It gave a good perspective of how archeologist disagree and what a wast world archeology is. For me at least it seems, having seen the video series, that there are evidence for the exodus and the more archeologists dig there will probably be more evidence. The authenticity of Moses is based on the public revelation at Sinai: God revealed Himself to the entire nation of Israel, at least three million people, and proclaimed before them the Ten Commandments. The entire Jewish people personally experienced that revelation, each individual in effect becoming a prophet, and each one verifying the experience of the other. With their own eyes they saw, and with their own ears they heard, as the Divine voice spoke to them, and also they heard God saying, "Moses, Moses, go tell them the following ..." They did not receive the occurrence of that event and accept it as some claim or tradition of an individual, but they experienced it themselves. That public revelation, therefore, authenticated the bona fide status of Moses as a prophet of God, and the Divine origin of the instructions he recorded in the Torah. That, and that alone, is the criterion for the belief in, and acceptance of, Moses and his teachings.

First of all, "The Jewish Bible" is a misnomer. If the Bible is historically accurate, which I am not saying it is, then the first five books are "The Hebrew Bible" or "The Children of Israel Bible", which encompasses a LOT more than descendants of the Tribe of Judah or of the eventual (thousands of years later) Southern Tribe of Judah, or Judea. Secondly, i have always had a problem with Samuel I and Samuel II and all the subsequent books of the so-called Old Testament since it tried to change the Hebrew faith into a supposed Judaic, or Jewish, faith. But they are practically two different religions!! And to hear this supposed rabbi, or teacher, call the books of the Bible, starting with Genesis, as "The Jewish Bible" is completely wrong and ingenuous of him.

Archaeology is an important factor in this discussion. "Has Archaeology Buried the Bible" by William Dever and "The Bible Unearthed" by Israel Finklestein and Niel Silberman. On the archaeological evidence, Finkelstein and Silberman conclude, "By the end of the twentieth century, archaeology had shown that there were simply too many material correspondences between the finds in Israel and in the entire Near East and the world described in the Bible to suggest that the Bible was late and fanciful priestly literature, written with no historical basis at all. But at the same time there were too many contradictions between archaeological finds and the Biblical narratives to suggest that the Bible provided a precise description of what actually occurred." "As for Me, I love who loves Me, and those who search for Me, shall find Me" Proverbs 8:17. All depends what is in the person's heart/how honest they are. Two types of people who will claim to be "Truth Seekers", those who look for how things might make sense, and those who instead seek for how things might not make sense. The agenda in the 1st persons heart is a genuine desire for truth, while the agenda in the 2nd person's heart is to find reasons not to believe in something. The person who seeks for how things might make sense, although still being critical, will still amass tremendous amounts of life-wisdom and Grand Truth's as they journey through life, since their minds are open and see things connect and testify to grander concepts and truths. However, the person who seeks for how things might NOT make sense, will in the end be left with absolutley nothing/zero actual meaning, since their agenda was always ever seeking holes to poke/closing their minds off, and not to actually seek a Grander Truth/how it is obvious that there is meaning to life, as opposed to the claim that there is no order/that reality is a soup-bowl of randomness/zero meaning, emotional and intellectual insanity.

Well done Rabbi! Like many atheists who debate online, Tjump (Tom), was not very familiar with several religious issues and some of the relevant science. Rabbi Singer quickly picked up on this & provided excellent answers. 1. Rabbi brought up that the supernatural came into our world and this was observed by an entire nation during the Exodus. - Tom, countered that Columbus predicted an eclipse. * Poor comparison by Tom. As mentioned by Rabbi Singer, an eclipse is a natural event. That is not the same as the supernatural events which occurred during the Exodus. 2. Rabbi brought up DNA markers to connect populations in Africa with the Jewish people. - Tom stated that DNA markers are so widespread that people today cannot be connected to very old populations. * Several DNA tests can find genetic markers for the Jewish people who often tended to live in separate communities. These tests include; MyHeritage DNA, 23andMe, Ancestry, iGENEA & LivingDNA. These DNA testing companies can trace ancestries & ethnicities back hundreds of years. The science of DNA testing is continuously improving. 3. Rabbi correctly stated that archeology is not a hard science. It is based on the current evidence which can quickly change. - Tom stated that Moses was a myth. * Rabbi correctly countered that science cannot prove that Moses did not exist. That is not how science works. The evidence for the accuracy of the Jewish scriptures can change every year. Significant recent discoveries have happened. Like the ancient Jewish scriptures in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Ketef Hinnom scroll. The Tel Dan Stele with the “House of David” inscription, dated to the ninth century BCE (from 900 to 801 BCE); Sun dried mudbrick, mentioned in the Book of Exodus, found to be the most common construction material employed in ancient Egypt during pharaonic times; The Amarna letters primarily consisting of diplomatic correspondence between Egypt and its representatives in Canaan and neighboring kingdoms, during the New Kingdom, between c. 1360-1332 BCE which requested military help in the north against Hittite invaders, and in the south to fight against the Habiru. Since the discovery of these 2nd millennium BCE inscriptions mentioning the Habiru, there have been many theories linking these to the Hebrews of the Bible. 4. Tom countered that archeologists were looking for artifacts which were mentioned in the Bible. * Why not? If ancient sites were examined in Central America, archeologists would expect to find relics of the ancient peoples who lived there including the Mayans. In the Sinai and Israel, ancient sites would often have relics from the ancient Israelites which is the case. That is a logical expectation. 5. Tom compared the pagan god Thor with God. * This is a misunderstanding that a minor god is not the same as God. God is the most powerful entity which the human mind struggles to comprehend as presented in the Book of Job (believed to be the oldest book in the Jewish scriptures). 6. Rabbi Singer stated that God through the prophets made predictions and that these came true. - Tom said the Jewish Bible predictions were like saying that there would be a dog. * The nation of Israel is not close to being a dog. Dogs are common animals which have continuously lived for thousands of years. The Jewish people had everything going against them. Decade after decade they were either slaughtered or persecuted. But they survived against all that opposition and today they have reestablished their nation. Imo it’s a miracle. 7. Tom said that ancient scriptures needed to be science text books or technology manuals. - Rabbi Singer properly countered this by saying 20th/21st century science would be useless for people living thousands of years ago. * Tom is bringing out the old ancient astronaut theory where we are supposed to find advanced tech or advanced scientific information. We don’t need to find that from the words of God because the people 3,000 years ago didn’t need it.

    1. The comparison is not that bad. Just as the Eclipse predicted by Columbus was a natural event, I would claim it is likely that if anything occurred on Mount Sanai it was also a natural event, was still perceived by an entire nation as supernatural just the same as the eclipse. 2. Tom did not say you could not be connected to old populations. He said that connecting to an old population or a common ancestor does not show that the ancestor was in fact Moses/Aaron. 3. Tom did not state that. He said that he thought historical consensus of scholars considered Moses to be a myth. Which Rabbi basically said "nu-uh only among secularists." Historically verifying some minor details, does not get us closer to confirming that not only did a Moses-like figure exist, but it existed exactly as described by the Torah. We should lower our confidence in ancient history because of how bad the evidence is for it, because we know it will change when we discover new evidence. The fact is that in that time period, embellishment and worse is found and to be expected in written works. 5. It makes no difference if you think one is just a minor god. Tom is just expressing that he is convinced that just as people wrote about Thor interacting with them, even though none of us believe Thor interacted with them, people similarly wrote about Yahweh interacting with them. I have no good reason to believe it either. 6. Yes, vague, statistically insignificant predictions. If thousands of civilizations predict they will survive, and 999 of them don't, the fact that the 1 of them that did survive predicted it, has no significance. 7. Tom did not say this. Tom said predicting some significant things that Humanity had yet to discover would be great evidence. Rabbi Tovah did not answer this well. On one hand Tovah is saying that this would not matter for people of the time. On the other hand he is saying this book is supposed to be for all people of all time. Which is it? Why not both? It would have been no hindrance to the people of Israel if there was a chapter on "things you will not yet understand but your descendants will discover about the Lord your God's creation." That over time, Humanity can constantly re-confirm that the Author of this Book did indeed have extensive God-like knowledge of the universe, rather than the writings just appearing to be that of some standard desert dwellers thousands of years ago with no special knowledge.

And like 70% of Asia which is quite phenomenal. Interesting at least. But I don't think that indicates for example that you are in a lineage specifically like Moses or something." * Genetic markers can trace an ancestry back to Attila the Hun but not Moses/Aaron? I don't think one can make that claim based on science. * As I wrote; "Rabbi correctly countered that science cannot prove that Moses did not exist. That is not how science works." 3. @Jesse King wrote; "He said that he thought historical consensus of scholars considered Moses to be a myth." * Those are scholars not scientists. Discoveries from the last 200 years in archeology have shown that people and place existed which scholars once believed did not exist. * As I wrote; "Rabbi correctly stated that archeology is not a hard science. It is based on the current evidence which can quickly change." * The physical evidence which supports the historicity of the Jewish scriptures has gone back further and further in time as newer discoveries are made. I believe the most accurate scientific answer about Moses, Aaron, Joshua and the Exodus currently is that we don't know. 5. @Jesse King wrote; "It makes no difference if you think one is just a minor god." * Of course it does. A God which is involved in the entire universe which famous philosophers have contemplated and discussed is not the same as a local thunder god. 6. @Jesse King wrote; "Yes, vague, statistically insignificant predictions. A document which attempted to that would be a science text book or technology manual. A person who has studied multiple sciences at a university level (like me) would understand that. In addition it helps to have a strong knowledge of history and culture. @Jesse King wrote; "On the other hand he (Rabbi Singer) is saying this book is supposed to be for all people of all time." * It is a fact that our modern forms of government and our laws of morality were influenced by concepts in the Jewish scriptures. @Jesse King wrote; "It would have been no hindrance to the people of Israel if there was a chapter on "things you will not yet understand but your descendants will discover about the Lord your God's creation."" * More ancient astronaut point of view. @@bb1111116 How very well laid out and readable of you. However often missing the points. 1. It has been said "I witnessed the snake Apep attacking the boat of the sun God" Not a natural event in description, except it is a natural solar eclipse as described by ancient ignorant people. The same could be said for this event in Exodus if it occurred at all. 2. Again, tom didn't say you can't connect to populations via genetic markers, as you quoted, he said people can. Individuals are not populations. Atilla is far more recent and talked about even by hostile contemporary sources. This isn't true for accounts of Moses. Turns out family history is easier to track when it is thousands of years closer. Confidence in direct ancestry to specific people that long ago should be low though, even well-known historical figures. 3. Again Tom didn't say Moses was an outright myth, just that he thought that was consensus among scholars. No one claimed this was some scientific proof against Moses. Most of us are happy to say we don't know, but I doubt you would convince Tovia to say that. "He knows His people's history!" 5. The type of God doesn't matter for the point being made. Missing the point is another issue. 6. Then I predict the sun will rise tomorrow! How significant if it happens! Uhh nope. I think a truly strong prophecy should meet these criteria: Specific and not open to interpretation, has an end date, and can't be known by the subject of the prophecy until after it is fulfilled. 7. Include the moral instruction for the more primitive cultures, and also include the important stuff for future scientifically enlightened cultures. Again: Either it is a book for all peoples of all times or it isn't. This is not a request for it to be a Science book. It is a request for it to make relevant predictions that would show the author has God-like knowledge.

What about not believing in King Arthur? Does that deny British history? If I don't believe George Washington really cut down a cherry tree am I denying U.S. history? Rabbis will use "secular historians" all the time to support the historical event of The Shoah but when the same "secular historians" declare that the events in Shemot are mythical not historical then those same "secular historians" (that use a process for these things) have an agenda.

If the Torah says that G-d is making the nation of Israelites a light to the world, and we all know a light is meant to shine, how come we don’t see top Rabbis speaking out against war, like the invasion of Ukraine. With all the communications ability and the social media outlets, why is it mostly, if not always political leaders who speak up and against such horrors? To be fair I will also put that question towards Christian spiritual leaders. If any religious entity claims their truth, then why don’t they really shine that truth? They must speak out, LOUDLY against war, bigotry, and injustice! Where ever it occurs in our world. But it seems that all you see is a defensive about their given religion being the correct one. I don’t care if it’s the Jewish religion, or the Christian religion, or the Muslim religion, etc…etc… LOVE must be the foundation! Aren’t we all, G-D’s children? G-d’s creation? Only later in the Tanach around the books of Isaiah do we se a change and then Judaism becomes monotheistic in nature. Where is the evidence for this claim that that there was an unbroken chain going all the way back to Moses? And wouldn’t it technically be Aharon since Moshe had a speech impediment? Who knows, one thing we do know is that Judaism started out very pagan i.e. sacrificing animals, Worshipping a pagan deity, etc. Sorry for being such a skeptic, but God or whoever gave me a brain to question everything. My questions for the Rabbi would be, 1. Why do prominent Jewish scholars in Israel deny that the Exodus happened? 2. How do you explain the several failed prophecies in the Torah? 3. Does the Torah prophecy that Christianity would emerge as a "bastard" branch of Judaism and be a deep thorn in Israel's side?

I believe the story is found on Egyptian walls. They have found evidence at bottom of sea, where Egypt was destroyed. Then when you go into the prophets and they are being directed by what took place with Moses they make many huge prophecies that have happened like Cyrus letting Israel go free. That was written before it happened. There is enough evidence knowing we have a creator and are here for a purpose it would make sense he would reveal himself to a people to shine to the world changing it into a holy place for him.

He defends his faith well. That said, he completely ignores the argument that T made justifying the 'minimalist' view of secular scholars... Would love to hear why there's no archeological evidence of the exodus, the flood, the years in the desert or the parting of the sea. Jesus, I mean the parting of the sea is the perfect thing where we'd 10000% find chariots, coins, bones etc in the sediment on the floor of the red sea. If that isn't explicit disconfirmation, nothing will be. Still, their faith and strong beliefs have made them one of the strongest ethnic groups in the world and for that, they should have pride.

Judaism was never given a real opportunity to spread, since in ancient times the Jews were surrounded by larger more powerful empires. It wasn't until the Maccabean revolt, that the Jews had an independent state but it only lasted about 100 years before Rome conquered them. After that the rise of Christianity, and Islam in the 7th century it was too late for Judaism, since it was seen as an outdated religion.

@DARK KATACLYSM" You and ALL of "Christianity" have been outright LIED TO by the "blind guides" of the church, who REFUSED to learn the original Hebrew given to us by God, leaving them in profound darkness as to what God actually said to us at Mt. Sinai, which resulted in the false, pagan, man-made religion of "Christianity" that blasphemously preaches AGAINST what God said to us there! You are confused because you've been indoctrinated by false, pagan, anti-God, anti-Jewish, hate-filled, replacement theology CHRISTIAN sources that blasphemously preach AGAINST what God said to us at Mt. Sinai. NO FURTHER SCRIPTURES were given to mankind by God after Mt. Sinai, since He specifically told us that the words that He gave to us there are ETERNAL (i.e. STILL in effect and binding TODAY - a LIVING document!) and that we are NOT to follow ANY OTHER teaching than what is in those Hebrew scriptures. "Christianity" IS another teaching, therefore, we are NOT to follow what it says - God's orders! You need to realize, accept and research for yourself, that, as I said above, NO FURTHER SCRIPTURES were given after Mt. Sinai, making the false, pagan "NT" NOT from God, and the "OT" is only a twisted, mistranslated, taken out of context, bastardized, blasphemous VERSION of what God ACTUALLY said to us at Mt. Sinai. PLEASE buy a Hebrew Bible (says "TANACH" on the cover), and learn from the Rabbis, as commanded by God in Deut. 17:8-11. In the absence of the Temple, the Rabbis are our spiritual teachers. .

@DARK KATACLYSM The One True Creator G_d warned us about Christianity thousands of years ago. The Christian's bibles are just very badly mistranslated and corrupted versions of the Torah/Tanach, with a whole lot changed including names, a whole lot added, and a whole lot taken out. Everything that G_d said not to do, Christianity did! Christianity lies! No Hebrew/ Jew was ever named Jesus nor John nor especially James.
