Some info on what this song's actually about: They're criticizing Japanese overwork culture. This is a brave act for them, and it's almost exclusively done by lesser known artists. So them doing this on an international stage is a huge deal.

Also the title is play on words in Japanese, or rather a play on sounds. Tokyo Calling sounds like Tokyo Korin (descending on Tokyo), which works with the fact that they are clearly in a Godzilla set for the music video and they are playing the Kaiju and the Defense Force.

What's special about this group is that they have been designing all their own choreographies since they were 14. They now even design choreographies for other groups. They also don't have a specific music genre, they do a lot of jazz fusion and punk and more recently have been working with the Beastie Boys producer Money Mark for the western market. They are NOT an idol group. Some have even called them an art project since it's so difficult to define them.

No studio audience is paid, in fact they wait in long lines to go for free though, and fans will sometimes get tickets through giveaways or try to go to a show bc they announce the schedule in advance. In New York people fly in from all over just to see their favorite artist perform outside the studio. Especially if the group hasn’t performed in the area before but still has a large online following. It’s not hard to imagine fans would turn out to support. This is obviously a group that inspires a following.

I met them in 2018, it was a small venue in Shibuya with maybe 200 audience members. They were so impressive in their performance even back then, I remember them really standing out from other groups. After the concert the groups were giving autographs and selling merch - Atarashii Gakkoo didn't have any staff with them, just the four members. They waved at me, shouting "haroo!" and I really liked them so I went over and bought a cd. I could only say "thank you" or such in Japanese, but I remember their bright energy. Seeing them become globally known is just amazing.

I've never been interested in pop music, and I would never have paid attention to AG in other circumstances. But one day KZread suggested that I watch the Tokyo Calling music video, and after ignoring it for a few days, I watched, and... Oh my god. I was immediately hooked. After listening to the song dozen of times, I started listening to more of AG songs. They started to grow on me, even as someone who don't like pop music normally, and now I'm a huge fan of the band and most of their songs. I know of many, many others like me. I think Tokyo Calling is a kind of open door, that brings in a lot of new fans that would normally not have paid attention to AG or J-Pop otherwise.

I used to listen to music that way, very nice! Until I started listening to lyrics and realize that some of them are f'd up. Like something I'd rather not support by listening to it. So I would definitely like to know what people are singing about. That being said, the story behind Tokyo Calling and its lyrics are outstanding. Especially for such a young group.

So refreshing. I love their choreos. Unique and genuine and somehow they feel relatable and danceable while actually being really skilled and not that easy at all hahah. But that relatability, realness is there and that's a huge factor for me. And they're very imaginative and creative, with having a great attitude and a sort of philosophy/theme to them. It's just so awesome to see a group like this that isn't afraid to not do the usual basic dance choreos and pop songs, bordering on something straight from a strip club or something, but actually doing something genuine, skilled, and different choreos full of personality. Same goes for the music. It's all over the place, but always interesting and often not basic mainstream music. I just hope the worldwide fame won't change any of that in the future.

To all of the bitter Koreans in the comments section, please stop. I appreciate all of you who like and support AG. Koreans know that if they say a lie out loud in front of the public, it will become true. In the past, Japan tried to prevent its soldiers from committing crimes. We brought in professional women for the purpose of preventing sexual crimes. They were paid high wages. It may have been misogyny. However, it was effective in preventing crimes on the battlefield and controlling soldiers. On the other hand, there is a woman who claims that a Korean national was abducted by a Japanese military jeep. At that time, the Japanese military did not own any jeeps. One woman testified that a Japanese soldier told her, ``I heard there's a cute girl here!'' and took her there. Is it really necessary for a Japanese soldier to speak fluent Korean and say something like that? They are well aware of the fact that the first to speak wins. AG hasn't studied that much, so I don't want him to get caught up in things like that. I want people to be able to freely entertain many people in a purely Japanese way. I hope so.
