AT Thru Hike Day 15 - To the Nantahala Outdoor Center
Today I'm headed to the famous NOC, the Nantahala Outdior Center, but just briefly in order to gain some more miles. It's a long climb out of the NOC but camping out half way makes it easier.

You being a Normal, nobody, that works his butt off making videos that relay a true passion, that feels genuine, is why I love your journals so much. Again,, Thank You
This video is “straight butter”. I really enjoy when you go in depth on your camp routine. Reminds me of times I’ve spent in camp.
Following you and KNA Outdoors. She must be a few days ahead of you. When she went by that rock formation just past the NOC, the trail was a small stream. Amazing what a few days difference can make in one's experience.
You have such a cheerful personality, I love watching all your videos, even the ones you think are crappy. The content is great.....lots, lots better than others........everything is so natural....you feel relaxed in front of the camera.....nothing is put on.....no fake smiles like we see in so many other videos .............I wish they would make a TV show out of your adventures........it would definitely get high ratings ! Stay humble, and u will go far !

So genuine. So true about the many others.
I really enjoy seeing what you do while in camp. I know it's a lot of work, so it's appreciated you take the time to film and share.
Thanks Jay, you're not a nobody at all, you're doing something extraordinary and welcoming a bunch of strangers into your world for 6 months while you fulfill a dream some of us are waiting to do. Your comments are great, views even better and you have a positive funny attitude. You're doing awesome and thanks for getting the videos out and worrying about us waiting for them, that's added pressure while hiking. Thank you
Thanks for sharing Jay! Just a normal guy that walks for months out in the woods living his dream!
Another great video with incredible views. That Cherry Coke sent me into withdrawals. Seriously, haven't had one in forever. Miss the trail diet!!! 🤘🕓

@@360mAN100 100% agree! These two together for some miles would be epic!
I’ve hiked from the NOC to the Wesser Bald Firetower and back on an overnight trip 6 times and every time was better than the one before it. I slept on the tower just to see the sun do down and experience the beautiful sunrise. Hike on brother and have the time of you life!!!!
I love the fact that you DON'T use the pre packaged hiker meals. I don't know if I could call ramen "Real food" or not, but it's good. On one of your zero's you should look up MontYBoca. He is a classically trained chef and specializes in trail food. It's more work, but might be worth it for an occasional treat.
If you ever get a chance to watch how Spam is made and what actually goes into it - you probably would never eat it again. I agree with Tina !!

If there's fat in it I'll take it.
Love how you are sharing with us your camp routines. Brings back lots of great memories of past trips. If I can’t backpack right now, I can live through you! Keep up the great work.
It’s U’r fuck’n personality that people fall in love w/ Jay!! I think U’r a stand up kat. Excellent camera work & editing. Keep doing what U’r doing, man, keep showing us the way!! Ty sir.
For you to be "just some guy" you are rocking it ! I eagerly wait each day to see "some guy" update his latest progress ;) Happy Trails
No doubt your viewer quantity is increasing. Great video, content, narration, and editing. Top of the pack of all Nobo you tubers. Good luck!
Loved your video… as usual. #11 was just as good. No worries at all. Love your perspective of photos. Typically don’t get to see such great quality! Again.. thanks for the hard work on your editing.
Hi Jay. I really enjoy your videos. I’m handicap so I can’t do a hike so thank you so much for the work you put into your videos. I live in Maryland and if you can figure out when you would be arriving to Maryland I would enjoy meeting you and thank you in person.
Great North Carolina views. Loved the tutorial how to make dinner on the trail within a budget.
If you want to free tent camp at the NOC, go over the bridge, turn right before the train tracks, go down the road, jump the fence at the Coke trailer, hike to the campsites, lots of water and firewood, and an easy beer carry. Sounds long but it's not.
I LOVE Spam too!!!! The best especially on trail but also prepare at home fried, with potatoes or rice. ---Kimbo
Wonderful views and pics. Thanks again for rekindling memories of my 2016 hike. I’m also so amazed you have the energy to climb those balds. I remember saying to my friend “I’m not willing to go the 40 yds to the Wesser tower n he told me “oh c’mon”. And so we climbed it and it was so wonderful. Totally worth the 40 yards off trail.
I'll say it again, you show views of the trail, I have never seen. So clear, with a good eye for photos. I would eat fried Spam as a kid. Don't know if I'd like it cold! Keep on truck'in!
really enjoying these longer videos! so much cool stuff to see it feels like im there right now hiking it as well!
HI JAY 👋 BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS VIEWS LANDSCAPE SCENERY WEATHER FOOTAGE VIDEO ! LOVE HOW YOU CAN SEE MILES 👀 MILES OF PEAKS , MOUNTAINS ⛰ IN THE DISTANCE . BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS / TRAVELS / ADVENTURES 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏 ENJOYED!
10:25 I think you are the first KZreadr I have ever heard try to pronounce it. Everyone else just says: N.O.C.
Hey Jay if you see this you probably think I'm a real weirdo watching you do the hike again, but I just wanted to say the NOC is probably my favorite spot in western NC along with Max Patch. It's just a couple hours away from our SC home, and I've whitewater rafted on the river before (it was a blast indeed). I felt bad that you couldn't eat at the Rivers Edge restaurant next door as they have some awesome pizza and other food. I do hope you're doing well my friend.
You brought butter! I love butter. Enjoying your channel
Thanks for adding in the making of your meal. It’s little everyday things that seem unimportant but it’s just as interesting as the hiking.

It was the first warm evening! Most nights I was in a rush to get everything done and get to bed.
You’re an inspiration! 13 days til I’m in GA!
Nan tay hay la is how the locals pronounce that outdoor center. Hope you got to get a snack at the restaurant there. They have great burgers! You are rocking it!
Thank you for another great video. Love the pearls of wisdom and views of comments in FarOut. Will wait for the next one. Oh, BTW, I liked 11 don't know what you are worried about. Also, I am with Tina about Spam - Yuck!
Just subscribed from Portugal! Been following your AT journey since day 1! Thanks for the hard work on the videos and good luck on the trail
You look at what I want to see. Thanks for that.
Thanks for taking us along!
Good video with lots of good views, so let's keep on
I continue to be so amazed at the clarity & beauty of your videos. Thank you seems so minor an expression . Glad you are heading to Stecoah Gap. There’s not much there but there is a guy who has a shuttle to his hostiles. We used to have a second home off HWY.28 for nine yrs. Loved it there. TIDBIT OF INFO: Hwy28 was called Moonshine Alley because it was the route the shiners used to transport their “product.”
I definitely think ‘hiker hunger’ has kicked in!
I love the way you see the world. I relate to it so much. Its also great to see the daily routines. You have it all so dialed in. Almost 50???? No. Way!!! I don't believe you. LOL. Happy hiking!
Great videos Jay! I am enjoying following your progress and insights.
Thank you for showing us your cooking methods.
You are so much fun watch. Best of luck to you. -Ken
Your winter weather has been confused for spring!!!
Thanks, Jay! I’m having so much fun tagging along. Your videos are charming.
Awesome video buddy!! I love spam & as an ex- okie is still call it the Appa-Lay-shun trail!! Getting better as I pick up more “eastern” followers…. 🥾🥾⛺️
I really enjoy that you share more of your camping/cooking experience. Seems so few thru hikers do.
Thanks for another day sharing with us mortals ✌️🌄
NOC water is ALWAYS ice cold. It comes off the bottom of the dam.

You got that right! Cold in the summer as well!
Good tip Jay for cleaning stakes
Love love love your content! Love your positive spirit and all the beauty you show along the way. The music that accompanies the footage is perfect. Thank you Jay.
Another awesome video, Jay. Thanks for sharing.
Just catching up on some of ur past videos Jay, NOC is a cool place to hike thru, can't believe the temps in February, looks like u have the trail all to ur self
Hey Jay! What a beautiful morning! Cold Spring is such a good spot. Great tip about cleaning your stakes. I hope you have better luck with your shepherds hooks than I do when you get up to New England. They just didn’t hold for me and my tent here. Huge shout out to early riser! That guy is a beast! Todays section was so beautiful. Those widow makers in the wind right over the trail made me so nervous! Better over the trail then over a camping spot I guess. Thanks for making dinner with us, looked super good! 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. -Grateful
I look forward to your video every day! You are an excellent teacher. I’m hoping to do the AT when I retire in a few years so I love watching your every day activities. I’ve never seen an insulated bag to keep your food warm while it’s rehydrating! Using a spoon instead of a hole creating spork makes sense too! I look forward to following and learning as you continue your adventures!
Most of the balds in the area were cleared then used for grazing in the past. Without the cattle or goats, they revert back the same as any other mountain top of the same altitude. Some balds are occasionally mowed or brush-hogged to preserve the bald. Roan Mountain was having a herd of goats brought in each year to keep it clear until the USFS ended the program. Mount Rogers has longhorn cattle and several herds of wild ponies to keep it clear. Many of the balds that were clear of all but grass, brush and shrubs are now grown over. Balds were a big part of the settler culture as they were summer grazing grounds for the settlers from the early 19th Century up until the parks were formed (1930s) or the USFS took them over. Except for a few, the balds are becoming less and less apparent. In the few decades I've been hiking them, I've noticed the changes. They used to be great for meteor shower viewing.
I’m so happy you shared your food! I love seeing what you hikers eat. I’d also like to see how you do dishes. But I don’t suppose you have any as you are only boiling water in your pot and not cooking in it. Anyway, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! Even the ones where the audio was busted. 😊
Video #11 was awesome!
Loving the content Jay! I've followed you since your PCT days, and I really appreciate your enthusiasm for the trail and all the natural wonders along the way. We're rooting for your success on the AT. Great job on video 11... beats all the PBS nature shows of the same "style". Stay safe out there. Looks like another winter storm hitting you about now. I'll also put in a +1 for the camp routine content. For other backpackers it really hits home.
One side of bridge is a massive Adirondack chair for tourist pics. It’s great fun in summer to sit along the river and watch the kayakers coming in and yes, they stunt. There’s also a public bath house in parking lot.
WOW, truly Magnificent 🥰 spectacular awesome beautiful fantastic amazing outstanding vlogging hiking and scenery all the very best.
Cooking with Jay. No measuring just toss it in. Then add a chunk of butter and then another chunk. Then eat some raw. I feel you in this video. I did a bit of running and it can be tough to get enough calories. Love the videos. Even number 11. I get how you get lonely out there and get into your own head. Gotta do stuff to entertain ones self.
@JayWandersOut try putting your spam or even some hotdogs in your ramen noodles. Thanks for the awesome video and I applaud your humble attitude along with the humor! You’re doing great! Best of luck for the long haul ahead! Huge thank your for your service as well! Be safe brother!
I’m eagerly awaiting for you to hit the Great Smoky Mountains 🏔 Hope to see a lot of the trail in your video… You’re doing great on your hiking journey 🥾🎒✌️Hike on!
I was gagging watching you eat the straight butter 😂😂

I ate even more tonight! Butter is hard to get off a spoon when it's near freezing.
Oh and the time he caught his small pack on fire 🔥
Great video. The views and audio are phenomenal. Thank you.
I'm really enjoying your videos. Your Channel, KaraKirtley, The Black Camper and Homemade Wanderlust are my favorites. I'm starting my hike in 2 weeks at Amicalola. I do raft guide work part time in the summer, if theirs time left in the rafting season when you finish your through hike, I'd gladly take you and a couple friends rafting. Thanks for your the work you do on your vids, you've been a great resource for me as I'm preparing for my section hike.
I'm pretty sure that was Fontana Lake you saw from the Wesser Lookout tower. I did a little googling and the results seem to say that it can be seen from there and it looked like it matched your video. Beautiful views all day!
Good luck on the pregnancy.
Stunning! ❤️
Thanks for all the work you do to get these videos out to us so fast. Your videos are all very good, even the ones that had sound issues. I also like the way you show little details like the widowmaker. That was the first real, ready to fall, widowmaker I have seen. Good Luck, and Happy Trails, watching to the end, notifications on. jimmy
I agree with Tina. Spam is not something I would eat. It's a lot of questionable items all mashed and pressed together.
Jay , it looks like the woods are on the verge of Spring!!! I thought it felt a bit like it here in Iowa today. Will be so fun to see the seasons change on your walk Thank you.
Gorgeous scenery enjoy your video
As good as Jay's videos are he does deserves to be called Mr Video! Thanks for the hard work and updates on Far Out comments.
These videos have been epic. Thanks Jay.
I wait until my wife goes out of town, then I spam out with plenty of fried spam sandwiches with Swiss cheese. Spam is a real man's favorite food. Probably help contributed to my heart surgery later in life.
Love a table at at camp site , and why didn’t I think of the leaves to clean the stakes , so thanks for the tip
Another great video.
Watching these videos brings back great memories of past section hikes. Thanks for these! Will follow you all the way!
Eleven was a great video. you did a great job.
Thank You!
Hallo! I'm deeply impressed by your videos. Your love for nature and hiking infected me. Always specific infos and great views. Thank you for your work to show us the trail as it is. In a couple of years I'll be hiking the AT too. That is because of your presentation and attitude of hiking and your knowledge of being part of nature. Thank you for your fresh and lovely vids. I will follow your entire journey and wish you all the best. Keep on hiking. Thank you and greetings from germany. Yours bionic robin.
Neat day, amazed that the weather is so nice...
Butter
Love following you. Great personality. And, love the nature shots, and views. That burl may have also been a squirrel shelf. They like to chew on wound wood, the fresh growth that a tree pruduces to cover a wound, or pruning cut. As they chew on it, they create new wounds the tree has to heal over. After repeated damage and regrowth the area begins to resemble a shelf.
Doing awesome!!!
Awesome videos.
Love the video’s keep hiking, call you hopper, you are always moving lol
Congratulations on 14K subs!!
Awesome views with great info. Thanks for sharing.
You’re doing a great job Jay. Episode 11 was cute! You have been so blessed with great weather 💝
Your videos are such a pleasure to watch!!! Great quality, and you have such a positivity and sense of wonder that is so refreshing! Sending you positive vibes to get you through!!!
Packing up my workshop too right now. Sacrifices are made to do these trips ❤️
Doing great. Your part of our day now Jay😊. Enjoy it for us.
The Noc is my favorite store. I m go once a year to TN and always visit. Little disappointed you didn’t show the inside. But great video. Now i know why u dont do filters
Your filming is awesome. Love your eye for videoing!
Great videos! I am really enjoying following along. Happy Trails
🤘
Enjoy the he SPAM while you can 😘
I did not realize your videos were a week or so behind - I love them but will quit mentioning what's ahead since you are usually beyond that - the postings each day are wonderful and so accurately show these sections of trail I know and love so well :)

Yep, it's the only way I can be consistent. For instance this next stretch will be 5 nights out so I need at least 5 videos queued up before I leave. Lots of work.
