ASUS X99-Deluxe Fail to Boot/Hang Problems

The X99-Deluxe Motherboard has a fatal Flaw. It won't boot/restart properly when you have lots of USB devices. This manifests itself in boot hangs at Code A2, AE or other areas. I share my personal experiences with the X99-Deluxe motherboard so that you won't have to be out the cash on a supposedly Top of the Line motherboard.

He said, that he unpluged his usb-hubs. My MB wasn't booting from the ssd nor an usb stick (in the front panel of the case). I shut off my dell monitor, which has an usb3 hub integrated, before booting and the system was booting. when i shut off my monitor, while the system was hanging, it resumes normally.

I had a very similar issue with the Gigabyte X99 UD3P, roughly 9/10 times the thing would not want to boot into windows. It would get either to the Gigabyte splash screen or to the initial Windows 10 logo and hang. I tried so many things, RAM memtest, multiple HDDs, bios updates, resets and CMOS clears, I even exchanged the CPU and motherboard from the store I bought them at with the same issue. Finally I saw this video and started playing with various USB combinations and placement and found moving my mouse (G502) and keyboard (CM Storm Quickfire Rapid) to a different set of ports fix the issue. Haven't had another boot hang since.

Thanks for this, Kevin. I'm running Ubuntu Linux which adds to the fun of this. But, following Alexandre Esquenet's advice I tweaked the bios by disabling all the stuff related to the handoff. I'm able to boot/reboot now without problems, even with a crapload of USB devices.

According to Rockless Yuki in his youtube video, you can solve it be going into the bios and enabling fast boot and you can disable the USB drives during booting.

Hi Kevin, First of all, thanks for taking the time to prepare this video and share your experience. Some time ago, I watched your video with interest after upgrading to Asus X-99S and discovering that my system would not boot if any of the USB devices was plugged in. You may be interested to learn that, in my case, a powered USB hub connected to a USB 2.0 interface card solved this issue when booting from cold. However, performing a 'restart' from within Windows 10 resulted in the system hanging at the BIOS splash screen. My original motherboard was replaced under warranty but the new one performed just the same. I researched this issue extensively and tried countless suggestions, all without success. I emailed Asus customer support and outlined the issue. I pointed out that mine was not an isolated incident and I provided them with a link to this video as I am of the opinion that your conclusions are rather compelling. I do have to say that I have never had a reply from Asus which is rather disappointing. Clearly, something is wrong with this particular product and I would still love to find a solution but in the meantime I can live with it. Well, that is, until a Windows update requires a reboot. When this happens, I shut the computer down and restart it manually. Sometimes I'm not quick enough to intervene, the update performs a 'restart' automatically and actually load Windows successfully - damn computers!

+Kevin Hill Hi Kevin, Thanks for acknowledging my comment - I may have some good news for you, well actually everyone! I followed the link provided at the top of this page and watched Reckless Yuki's 'rant' video (things like this shouldn't happen to such a nice guy), anyway, I decided to try his 'fix' (enabling fast boot and disabling USB support during boot up in the BIOS)... guess what... this seems to have fixed it. I confirm I have three USB flight controllers connected to a USB 2.0 PCI interface card via a powered USB hub. I have ran a few tests tonight and to my complete surprise, everything is working fine - boots from cold without any problems and performs a restart from within windows without hanging at the BIOS splash screen (that's it... what's the bet I've just jinxed it now) hahahahah... but I'll let you know if the issue returns. Just going to post a thank you on Reckless Yuki's page too. Thanks again

In other videos i see the light is not on and i was just hoping that was working instead of just deleted to save price on the board. Please let me know if the debug led turns on that would really help me thank you.

I was able to identify this problem myself after about 20 hours of testing. The error is related to xHCI handoff from the BIOS to the OS. If you have any USB devices that do not conform to Intel's xHCI standard the system will hang. The motherboard enforces this strictly. In my case it was a Logitech Extreme 3D Joystick that had no firmware updates available which made it incompatible. I just unplugged it from the system and it solved my problem. With that being said, this is the first time I purchased a Non-Rampage motherboard from ASUS and I will never again purchase any motherboard except the Rampage edition. this ASUS x99 Deluxe has given me more problems than any motherboard I've ever owned. It still works and I'm still using it, but I would not recommend it to anyone.

Had issue with the board ever since it was released. Stability of the system is the worst, and cold boots issues despite having the freshest bios. It has gotten slightly better, but very disappointed I must admit. It has been paired with a 5960x, so kinda want to bring some more life into the setup again. Have the x99 rampage been any better? I have one in my old system that has never been used since I put it in (old watercooling, so have been a hassle).

Hi 10tenman10 - I use the Audio Technica 2020+ USB microphone - and when I record, I use OSB and the sound comes in with the video. I HAVE had syncing issues, which I have not really paid much attention to (as you can see in the video above I think). OSB will let you choose which device to use for sound - so it should be pretty easy to tell it what to use. This of course, is if you are using the computer for recording. I am not aware of a USB solution for a DSLR though. Anyone know of a way to use a USB microphone with a DSLR like the T2i?

My external USB3 HDDs, WebCamera, UPS have no issues despite being a mottley assortment of USB1/2/3, but the Joystick when plugged into one of the X99 USB2 or 3 ports stops boot with error code Fb. I bought an MSI X99 Deluxe and had issues booting using Windows 10. After tinkering with it, applying every possible update I figured out that I could boot up without an issue and consistently as long as I didn't have any USB devices connected. This wasn't a real fix so i continued to troubleshoot. Then finally it hit me! I put 2 USB devices on one USB 3.0 slot and the other 2 USB devices on another USB 3.0 port. For me this translated into using my keyboard and mouse on my rear USB ports. Then using my USB headset and Joystick on my front USB slots. So far its been over a month and I haven't had any issues booting. .

I have the ASUS X99-Deluxe/U3.1 and everything was great until the weekend. Everything started running hot then wouldn't boot. Then all it would do was boot into the BIOS automatically and wouldn't load windows. After about 10 BIOS resets I got it to boot but windows loaded much slower. I disabled USB support on boot and seemed better but then I couldn't get into the BIOS with my USB Keyboard of course! Seems to be a bit unreliable at the moment but has been fine for weeks and nothing's changed. Odd.

I can confirm that the upping the Cpuio voltage on a x99-a / usb 3.1 to 1.2 volts has resolved this issue for me , I had previously used fast boot and disabled usb at startup to work round the problem , lots of boards have issues. But I thing the problem here is the quality of asus tech support , the people I spoke to were useless , they wanted to blame everything else in my system and waste my time rather than spend some of there's to test and troubleshoot this problem , they could fix this issue by offering a bios update with better default settings , the x99 deluxe is not only board with this issue , but come on asus get your finger out and offer better support , I used your support years ago and you were great , seems you dropped the ball here

I mean I know the video is old but have you tried a bios update on that board or even RMA it? I know the Deluxe boards had some bios issues before, it had to mostly do with the boot strap and ram XMP clocks, but idk if they did anything to the USB's with any of the updates. I had a Asus z77 Pro board and it had issues with its USB 3s during boot up, like it would not work with my keyboard in the bios, and sometimes it wouldn't work with my mouse, windows was fine. Updated the bios and it sorted out my issues, but I could not get the same lvl overclock ever since so I reverted back to a bios where I can get the clock speed I wanted on my locked 3770s, and then I had USB 3 issues with my keyboard during bios again. Plugging it into USB 2 and it had no issues everytime I wanted in the bios.

Hello: I just now ran across your video and wanted to share a solution for your USB issues with the Asus X99 Deluxe. You may have already sold or trashed the board and so this will be moot and of no use at all. There is a bios setting to disable all USB ports at bootup except for the keyboard and mouse. I own the X99 Deluxe experiencing similar issues and when you change the bios setting, the problem should go away. After the handshake with Windows 10 and the bios completes, the USB ports are enabled when you log into windows.

+Kevin Hill I get the same issue with my Asrock extreme 4/3.1, My friend gets it with his Gigabyte G1 gaming X99 board and another friend with his ASUS X99-A. I have also read this issue happening with pretty much every X99 motherboard. Just having my motherboard and Corsair H100i AIO water plugged into USB was enough to cause it but upping the CPU ring voltage to 1.125v from 1.05v 100% fixed the issue. Haven't had it since. I can't explain who cpu ring voltage fixed this "motherboard usb power issue".

I had the exact same issues on my Asrock Extreme4/3.1 Upping the cpuio voltage from 1.05 to 1.125 completely fixed this issue. I haven't had it since. Also it seemed like a USB issue as well because moving my devices to the PCI-E USB 3.1 card fixed it but not 100% of the time. The cpuio increase was a permanent fix.

+Kevin Hill its the cpu ring voltage not the vcore voltage. these voltages are well within intels specs. Fairly sure they up to 1.2v is within spec. I am going to up my cpuio to 1.2v and try some more overclocking, I still haven't gotten 4.5ghz stable yet with my 5820k, it looks like I got a bad overclocking chip. A mate of mine is running 4.8ghz on 1.29v, I cant even get 4.4ghz at 1.29v

+Kevin Hill Check your CPU I/O voltage. By default mine was 1.05v which wasn't enough. I wouldn't be surprised if your mobo runs more by default. I have found a few forum posts saying this sorted their USB issues as well. Intel spec sheet says up to 1.35v is within spec.

I'm having a similar problem with my X99 Deluxe... All I can get is the BIOS screen. Nothing ever happens beyond that. It WAS working fine for a few months. Then this started happening. Took it to a local shop 4 times, first time they said I had viruses but they never fixed the problem. Then I took the HDs out and added 2 identical 1TB HDs to create a RAID 1 system in case this happened again. A friend set up the two drives to recognize them as RAID 1 (which I've now forgotten how to do - pressing ctrl-I doesn't do it), but it's still not going past the BIOS. Another friend who's been in IT 15 years worked on it for a few hours but he couldn't figure it out either. Every time I call Asus they give me some low-level person who gives me different advice. I took your advice and removed all USBs except for the mouse and keyboard but it's still going to the BIOS and does nothing beyond that. During one phone call with Asus they had me reset the motherboard to default and that erased my RAID 1 setup, so now it doesn't even recognize that. But even if it did, it's still not going beyond the BIOS. Asus says to update the BIOS as the one I have (1801) doesn't work well with RAID. Any suggestions?? I'd really appreaciate any help.

+Kevin Hill Thanks for the reply. I changed it to RAID in the BIOS and am able to get it to boot now with both 1TB drives installed. It installed Windows, but then at the very end it says "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware." Both the two old drives are unplugged. The only drives plugged in are the two new 1TB drives. It ran before when I had the 500GB SSD drive as the C drive. When it boots up now I do see the quick screen where it recognizes the RAID setup... then it says Starting Windows... then it says "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.". Then when it reboots I get that same message again. Then I start Windows again, and it does the same thing over and over...

+Kevin Hill Well to answer your question, no I haven't tried setting up an AHCI configuration yet because a friend of mine told me to set up a RAID configuration, so I got the drives, and we plugged them in, and he said I'd be OK after that. Turns out I was still only able to get so far as the BIOS screen. He's not always easy to get a hold of and I'm waiting to hear back from him now (I'm not in a very big town so there aren't a lot of people I can turn to here locally). I hate to undo the RAID setup until I talk to him again. But thanks for your help... If I don't hear back from him after a while I'll try just one drive and see how far I can get with that.

Damn, I was thinkig i'd messed something up with my overclocking, but it seems it's an issue with Asus X99 motherboards. My problems have been not posting at all, or once I got to Windows the keyboard didn't work. Or, it didn't read all the RAM-sticks (and i've tested them to make sure they're OK). Just recently my waterpump (AiO watercooling) stopped working. All the fan headers on the motherboard worked with regular fans, so I figured the pump most have broken down. So, now i've bought a Noctua CPU cooler, and guess what? Shit still doesn't work. Sure, the fans do actually spin around so I can use my computer. Buuuut, the fucking motherboard can only read two fan headers. The third reads as 0 rpm, though the fan is working. I just returned the AiO cooler when I should have returned the motherboard. Now i've tried updating to the latest BIOS, in the hopes that will solve my issues, but alas... my BIOS can't even read the fucking file. I've had several generations of Asus motherboards, but this is will be the last one.

Hi Kevin, I saw two replies here from you but now they're gone. I had been writing up these replies in Wordpad and when I got back, it looks like they're now gone. Well, here are my replies anyway... I'm taking a good look at MSI boards, particularly the Krait. I'm just wondering if my 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) Extreme Performance Memory Kit will run in it. It doesn't specifically list 2800 as a supported speed in the specs on the MSI Krait. This is what it says about memory: "Memory: 8x DDR4-3333(OC)/ 3110(OC)/ 3000(OC)/ 2750(OC)/ 2666(OC)/ 2600(OC)/ 2400(OC)/ 2200(OC)/ 2133 DIMM Slots, Quad-Channel, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, Max Capacity up to 128GB". The one factor I'm looking for above all after this horrible experience with this Asus board is that it's solid. I like bells & whistles, but what good are they if all you're doing is spending time trying to just get your rig to run like this Asus X99 Pro and Deluxe? I looked at the MSI Krait... very nice, but I think I'd prefer more stuff on it. Maybe they have a model one higher up. I'll do some research... Do you happen to know how many fan headers that mobo has? I have 4 case fans + the CPU fan. I didn't want liquid cooling, so I'd like to have a mobo that could handle all my fans, if that's possible. And no worries... I never suspected you were sponsored by anyone. Here's the reply to the second post I saw: Actually Kevin, at this point and after everything I've been through I've been trying to FORGET everything that I've done along the way. This has been a horrible experience... no thanks to Asus. I would love to share everything I did so that maybe it might help someone else, but unfortunately I didn't keep any notes, plus I don't have the best memory in the world too. However, it did involve lots of pulling parts out and putting them back in again, making sure they were working, trying to narrow down the cause, swapping out parts, LOTS of work in the BIOS, and a very careful reading of the manual many times. I had no idea that this was going to turn into the experience that it did. I know now I should have kept some notes though. Also, since I couldn't get it to run, I turned it over to other people and I'm not sure what all they did on it. But I'll try sharing what I can actually remember. The bottom line is that you simply shouldn't buy this board. And if you already have one and are having problems with it and can't get a refund for it then I'd say that the proper fix for this beast involves a sledgehammer, a few M-80's, some gasoline, and a match. Anyway since you asked, I'll try going in to some detail. Maybe there's SOMEthing I say that might help someone out there. I'll try to remember what I can for you... Last summer, I began searching for parts for the perfect PC for me. I researched every single part and spent at least three months researching everything that would go in to it so that I would have the PC that was exactly right for me and what I needed to do with it. I obsessively researched for many weeks so that I would end up with a PC in which I knew every single part and the entire thing would be just right for me. Initially, I got an Asus X99 Pro, but after several days of frustratingly working on it and getting help from a friend who builds computers for a living, I was not able to get it to run. So I sent it back and got a replacement. I couldn't get it to run either. At that point, being that I never wanted to see this mobo again given all the work I had put in to it, I decided to get an Asus X99 Deluxe. Surely this board wouldn't have the problems with it that the Pro board did, especially since it was more money. Boy was I ever wrong! The X99 Deluxe did run for four months, so at least it did that. But then suddenly for no apparent reason, it wouldn't make it past the BIOS. I never changed anything to make it do that. Every time it boots up it would go directly into the BIOS and nothing I tried could get it to do any different. I worked on it for a few days, but no bueno. So I took it to a local PC shop. After taking it back four separate times, they weren't able to fix it either. So I took it to another shop, and they couldn't get any different results. So I had a friend help me who has 15 years IT experience. He couldn't get it beyond the BIOS either. He spent five hours on the phone with me one night. Another friend with 15 years experience in IT also couldn't get it working as well. And any time I called Asus Tech Support, all I would get is some... well, let's say... "non-senior" IT person who offered lame advice and wanted to get me off the phone as quickly as possible. Of course I tried everything they suggested, but it still wouldn't make a difference. I even bought two other hard drives too to make sure there couldn't be any possible problem coming from them because that's what I was told at the first shop (what-ever).. And during the time that the Deluxe board actually ran, I never could get it to overclock at all or set up a RAID system either. Which are other issues in themselves... So in the end, I had spent $2,500 on the system and it's been a total waste of both money and time. I would have been better off just burning that money. Not only that, but because of the extended downtime, I had to buy another $2,500 PC from HP just to have one that actually runs -- and of course neither of those figures includes the lost work time I've incurred nor the money I spent having other people try to fix it too or the money spent on the HDs. I did write to Asus, and they did offer to send me a replacement, but keep in mind that these aren't new boards -- they're refurbished ones. And it takes Asus 2-4 days on average to return an email. So the way it works is; you pay for a new board, and when it doesn't work, then you get a refurbished one that (I presume) someone else has had problems with. Fortunately Amazon is great and I'm going to get a refund for the Deluxe board too. To be honest, I first built a PC in 1987, but aside from all the times I've built & rebuilt these systems with the Pro and then the Deluxe mobos, I hadn't built a system in probably 15 years. However, I was trying to figure out the combined years of IT & system-building experience everyone has who has tried getting them to run, and I came up with 120 years of combined IT/system-building experience of the people who've worked just trying to get this system to run. And then when I call Asus to try to get someone to help, I'm just given quick (short) worthless advice that doesn't help -- from people who don't understand how much time and effort I/we have already put in to getting the X99 Pro and the X99 Deluxe boards to run. It seems like they just want to get you off the phone as quickly as possible. So between the time I and others have spent on these boards, the money I've spent from local shops trying to get the X99 Deluxe to get beyond the BIOS, having other people try to help me with it, the money spent having to buy other equipment like hard drives to eliminate those as a potential problem-causer ($400-500), having to buy another computer from HP ($2,500) just so that I'd have one that actually runs, and the lost income & work time from not having a running computer... to say it's been beyond incredibly frustrating would be the understatement of the century. Also, two more things... I just now realized that I had tried TWO Asus X99 Pro boards, not one. It was a while back and I had forgotten about the second one but just realized there were in fact two of them after going through my Newegg and Amazon order history. So this makes THREE bad Asus X99 boards I've had. Here's a list of the other hardware I have while trying to get the Pro and Deluxe mobos to run: 1 x Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W BX80648I75820K Desktop Processor 32GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) Extreme Performance Memory Kit ... 1 x Crucial BX100 2.5" 500GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT500BX100SSD1 1 x Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD 1 x GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 960 4GB G1 GAMING OC EDITION 1 x CORSAIR RM Series RM850 850W ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply 1 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan 1 x LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM 1 x Asus DVD rewriter (can't find the model # right now) 1 x Internal Card Reader 3.5" USB 2.0 Port 40 1 Extra Silver Rosewill 1 x RAIDMAX Cobra ATX-502WBG Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 3 x Scythe SY1225SL12LM-P Slip Stream 120mm PWM Case Fans Windows 7 Professional 64bit I also later purchased these too, and they wouldn't run with these either: 2 of WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX 1 x Seagate Hybrid Drive ST2000DX001 2TB MLC/8GB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop SSHD Like I said, I wish I had kept notes but I just had no idea this was going to turn into a long ongonig adventure. Me too have experienced a lot of trouble with Asus X99 board but mine is the simpe X99 A but still, tiresom.. I went from MSI to Asus kinda regret it now, wen it works I thin AI suite is superior to other brands so that was the reasoning but of course only use it every now and then + OC can be done right in bios/uefi so yeah regret it. If I OC mine I loose ram sticks every now and then + the boot problems not to mention, how slow is this board to boot? Yes tried several different SSD´s it´s not the SSD it´s the board, problems with certain pumps/fans etc.. etc.. tired of Asus. Support is horrible here as well, when in contact I am very nice and behave but met back with attitude like for example: No our boards are the best, no problems with them etc.. They do admit they are saving in on components they tell me this but claim they are still supreme and I cannot send my board in cause I know they will use different ram, cpu, gpu, drive etc and no OC so problems might not appear directly to them so cannot prove it´s the board, they keep pumping out bios releases but it never get fixed! Fanboys on Asus mainstream rigs refuse to belive there is something wrong with it and I know the Z99 Asus boards are more stable and better what to do?

Interesting. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out many of the same issues you have been having. In fact, I was going to skip your video until I saw the sim racing kit in the background. I also and a plethora of sim kit, and have had nothing but trouble since I built my x99 rig. It was driving me insane for many of the same reasons it sounds like it is for you. I keep thinking, "I do this for a fucking living, and I can't get my rig to boot consistently no matter what I do." A couple things I have found...Grounding devices to an actual ground in your house helps. It may not be practical, and, usually I have found that grounding problematic devices to a computer case is sufficient. In the case of the x99 this was not enough or separate enough for the chipset. Also, I have found later iterations of motherboards to be better at handling (what manufacturers like to call) "noisey devices" (guess what, your motherboards should be able to handle this without me running speaker wire from my computer to a pipe under my sink... Really... Seriously) that the first iterations. I'd be interested to see if the new generation of lga 2011-3 CPUs are better at power handling than the older 59xxk CPUs. Apparently Intel moved the power handling functions on to the CPU with lga 2011-3, and rumor has it that they'll be moving it back off next chipset. Perhaps this wasn't ready for prime time. Ps. I started with an msi sli-plus motherboard (I call this my "ghost in the machine" computer cuz it has never worked right... Ever), then switched to an asus x99-a ii and a new 5930k CPU and the problems seem to have gone away.

LoneRegister I feel you... I kept reasoning with myself, "it doesn't need to boot every time I have my wheel and pedals plugged in. It doesn't need to have all of my ram in it... It works with 16gb just fine. That crash was my fault, I made it work too hard." Then I snap out of it and say, "it should work, I've replaced literally every component, I know what I'm doing, and this is way too much trouble for a high end PC I built myself." I wish Intel/motherboard manufacturers would just stand up and say, "yeah, the x99 chipset was a little half baked when we released it. Sorry."

Asus them selfs were no help, when i spend $100's of dollars, i expect the shit to work, just like you. im sure you ran into the same problem i did(a god damn refund), i couldn't return the board because it was wayyy past the return date, and all asus wants to do is send me a new one. so basically, im out $400 because even if they send another one, it has the same issue. i found out if i just unplug all my USB at every boot, i have zero issues, i got windows 10. Its a bitch to boot that way but it's functional. I want to file a class action lawsuit because there jack-legging people like me and you around for the alot of money, you have the box so i take it your stuck with a shitty x99 board too. i want to find all the people i can with this issue and either have them make a permanent fix, or give us our money back, all of it. Strictly because it was sold to me as a working product, when you turn a PC on, you expect it to work. it's pretty simple. #F***ASUS

I need help! I have the X99 Deluxe ii and it wont turn on :( I have everything connected correctly and even brought it in to Geek Squad today and they confirmed everything is connected correctly. It was turning on with only 1 stick of ram after I initially set it up - however, it wouldnt output video and had error code 76 on the board. I then hit cmos reset button while it was on and it now wont even turn on! I press the power button and it turns on for a milisecond, the fans turn for a milisecond, no code, and then nothing! The white lights on the board however still remain on as well as the power and reset buttons. Any help would be much appreciated!

If you have lots of USB connected devices that are taking up 1amp to 2amps, the motherboard is only designed to take on so many amps! I would recommend getting a powered-hub! I bet that would solve your issues!

+Kevin Hill Sorry, I just made assumptions off the title and didn't watch your entire video. I do have experience with over-powering issues of USB ports like on my MacBook Pro which is why I made that statement. I came across your video by researching this same MB after I had already bought it based on other positive reviews. I do have enough power-hungry USB devices where I can test to see if I have the same issue. Maybe you got a lemon? I say that because after watching the ASUS tech rep give an extensive review of the board, it should take whatever you throw at it, within reason of the power consumption on each USB port. I'll let you know what I find once I get this pc built. Also, you look much younger in your video than your thump pic. Just something I noticed. lol

+BuddySteve So I watched the entire video now. I'm wondering if you checked to see if there was a BIOS update available from ASUS? Did you contact ASUS tech support on it? I know it's too late now as you've changed motherboards but the other thing I would have checked is the actual USB power consumption the HUBs were taking from the motherboard. There is this USB 3.0 monitor that will tell you the voltage output and the amps being used on that port. I'm wondering if maybe your hubs were drawing too much power or if maybe by chance, the hubs were passing a lot of power back into the motherboard causing this to happen? In anycase, glad your issue has been resolved! I will definitely try to replicate this same issue to help verify it's an issue with all boards of this model and will definitely try every possible solution to this issue. If ASUS says they have powerful USB ports in their official video presentations, this should not be happening and would also make me want to switch to another brand! Thanks!

You could always disable usb at startup. That seems like a cheaper solution.

  • @LoneRegister

You could - but the point is that this motherboard, a high priced on at that, fails to function with the USB setup that I and many others have. Yes - I could disable USB at startup. But that's not what I paid for.

I am sorry you feel that way. I felt that the issue was a big enough let down, that it needed to be shared for others to see and learn from. I also thought that perhaps others might comment on the video and provide solutions that worked for them. For me, it was buying a new motherboard. For others it was finding and removing an offending USB device. For others, it was boosting motherboard voltages.

Yea - I wish I could report a solid fix. But for me it was a jump to another brand. I DID try many, many BIOS configs. Both BIOS updates, and settings changes. None of which worked. Then I DID find that if I reduced my system to just a few USB devices (like 1 keyboard, and mouse) it would boot consistently. But I did not pay top dollar for a system that can't have all of my many, many USB devices. (2 keyboards, 2 mice, USB camera, USB microphone, USB security KEY, Track IR, Fanatec Steering Wheel, 2 button boxes, Pedals, racing display, Warthog HOTAS - and probably a few more things that I have forgotten to list. Thanks for writing back - I hope that we do find a solution. I fear it might be an issue with the USB chipset or the X99 chipset or something hardware related that cannot be fixed via software. :(

I have the x99 deluxe had the same issues, I updated to the latest bios version (2101 I believe is the version number) then in the boot menu of the bios I have usb's disabled on boot up and everything works beautiful! No hang ups at all. BTW updating the bios on this board is so simple and painless a 3 year old could do it literally..... Hats off to Asus for making it so simple to do

Jus a note for others: I updated from 1702 to 2101 after hearing about the improvements; it completely hosed my stability. Back on 1702 now and everything is fine again (as long as I don't try to reboot soon after intensive activity).

  • @timnorthover6669

On 2101 I saw hanging during boot, hanging shortly after boot and powering off when trying to enter setup (strangely F2 seemed to be more reliable than DEL). But fortunately 1702 rarely gave me any issue (how often do you reboot?). I'm assuming ASUS are supporting multiple board variants here, not quite successfully. As long as everyone has at least one revision that works for them, that's probably just about forgiveable.

I shut my machine down every night. Throughout the day I only reboot if a game freezes my system up. I have always used F2 to get into BIOS never thought to use DEL. One thing I did have to do even after the update was Disable USB'S during boot up. That is a biggie. for whatever reason this board does not like anything but your mouse and Keyboard plugged in during boot up (at least my board anyway) so the workaround for me was to disable them in the boot menu of the BIOS so I could leave my headphones and external HDD plugged in. What the Bios update did was give me stability finally for my overclocks on 1502 I couldnt keep a stable overclock on my CPU or GPU

Hi all, ibhad this same issue however I solved it ! Unplug your mouse and it will boot every time. What model mouse you got? The problem seems to be related to the onboard Ram on my mouse, its almost like its trying to boot from the onboard Ram.

I had a similar issue with asus rog cross hair 4 with my Belkin game pad holding up restarts. the flash eventually fixed it. I have the x99 deluxe with no issues I hope it stays that way.
