The major issue with asus routers since the Dark Knight n66u is heat. The n66u was just about unavailable and ran cool. The 68u and 86u had dual core 800, 1000 and 1800Mhz cpus with just about the same cooling solution. As a result they can slowly cook them selves. 66u ran at 58c no active cooling. 68u around 77c and 86u 88c. The cpu might on paper be able to handle it but the surrounding capacitors and other components can't. That combinded with brittle solder joints = more potential issues. The current 86us run too hot and really need active cooling via USB fans on the back of the unit. I think people just have gotten use to replacing cell phones on a whim of color change they think routers are the same. You should not have any issues for YEARS if you cool them. I have 10 YO ones that work perfectly fine.

Go AC and invest to get 6E device in the future. 6E will have 160mhz bands and enough of them (AX only has two of these and causes interferences with neighboring WiFi and no devices support 160 yet that I know of) for it to be usable and hopefully by then, devices might support it. You will then see a noticeable difference vs AC/WiFi 5 since it’ll actually connect at 2.4Gb/s if you have a device capable of using 160 MHz wide channel. So you could see even 200MB/s under optimal conditions (here’s me hoping)
